Rick Shaw lived about two blocks up from my house about a half hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge. We were like brothers most of the time. I once kept a kitten his wife arranged for me to "see" for the rest of its life, and a few years into its next one.
No one in the community knew what Rick did for a living or had the slightest hint of his San Francisco and national broadcast celebrity. The most they may have gleaned was that he was a member of the local Lion's Club chapter and worked tirelessly with them raising money for the local Marin gentry. He wanted to stand in line with the other folks, no special favors.
The Rick Shaw (one of three in the USA once upon a yesteryear) that was just a small walk away in my neighborhood was one of the most consistent, smooth, prepared jocks I knew, a real asset to the biz. He even did his bit to pass the baton -- taught a broadcasting class at a University in San Francisco.
Sadly, he passed several years ago. It was great to see him on the air again, thanks for the echo, recto101. I'm glad to see he is still remembered here.
