Ricker

So now with KUFO in Portland being killed and now simulcasting KXL does this open the door for Ricker to return to return to Seattle?
I mean we all know how tight he is with BJ, they're looking to add a new sidekick (saw ad on All Access) could he be joining their show?
Or if money isn't that tight over at Met Park maybe Ricker takes his old gig back as middayer and they let Ryan just do his APD duties.
All very interesting in particular how KUFO fell in the ratings as badly as they did which I know is a topic for a Portland discussion group but is part of the equation in the story with Ricker too.

Not sure, but he was pretty popular on KISW.

Or and with Rick Double R Robertson at the end of his non-compete does that present an opportunity for two very well liked friends to team up and do a show of their own someplace other than KISW?

Hmmmmm

That would be great (said with a bit of reserve). Those two aren't the brightest scientists in the shed, but they just have basic blue collar humor, fun, positive type attitudes (not bitching most of the time)...might be something that works. Kind of like the Men's Room...only different.

Yo, for any of you who aren't f-n knotholes, Ricker is the shiznit!!
His first stint at KISW in '03, was as the night guy, kickin' ass and taking names!
Later on they shifted him to mid-days and totally delivered the goods.
His on-air persona is rock solid, material topical and relevent!
Sorely missed - would be a solid addition to BJ and the Morning Experience!
Nuff said!

Too much talk, not enough music, If I want to wake up to talk I would set my radio for some AM news/talk. Kisw flip flops between music and news/talk (during morning and afternoon drive) they might play a song or 2, then blah, blah, blah KISW was owned as KJR's FM when it switched formats from classical to "Purple Haze" around 40 years ago, I heard that 1 time the jocks went on strike, so they rolled in a couple of jukeboxes to break the strike (the 1st automation?) Les Smith would know. I ended up manufacturing automation working for Les Smith and this goes back to a commodore 64 running the automation. He branded it Sentry systems. Reel to reel and carts automated by a pc in basic.

Although I didn't listen to him a ton, I thought he was Seattle's most unique air personality. I'll admit that mixing his schtick with a commercial made for painful listening, but his ad libbing with callers was fantastic. Would like to see him back in the market.

Can we start another thread on this topic? I'd love to hear more about your experiences -- Sentry was a good system (esp. given the technology available in the day, when IGM was running systems based on DEC PDP 8, etc.). But we better hurry away from here or I'll get in trouble for being off-topic again.

Looking forward to it!

I'm sorry, Did I break a rule of wandering off subject? Yes I agree, Ricker has a great radio voice and the girls like that so he can get away with a little more as he talks to them over the phone, makes for good talk radio. He is interesting, like he is a teacher on how to pick up women for the guys. Also If you had a sentry system, I probably built it. I think there should be a discussion board about history of Danny Kaye and Les Smith's KJR, Kaye/smith studios (Bad Animals), Broadcast Programming, kisw and all the stations they owned. It was very exciting to work there 20 years ago, good times. since Les Smith owned the Mariners baseball org, I could go to the games and sit behind the dug-out for free.

thought radio out grew this juvenile testosterone radio schtick with leykis. reckon not. there is a whole new crop of immature 13, 14, and 15 year old boys who will get off on it. if your much older than that and listen/get off, grow up!!

i wonder if this ricker character "teacher on how to pick up women", is as big a loser as tom leykis, with his 6 marriages, and endless nights alone with the TV remote control, after the on air radio party schtick act ends!

Whenever the song ends and the talk starts I flip to another classic rock station, but sometimes they are talking nonsense on both in unison and I have to turn it off. I have been a fan of KISW for 40 years, and still my favorite for music.

Yea, the same act. I don't think his Cheats (sp) and Chong bit works. That teaching young teens that smoking weed is cool. He's a POS.

Well, in a town that has one of the biggest yearly pro-marijuana rallies in the world (Seattle Hempfest) and the Seattle cops usually don't do anything with anybody who has less than a few grams of pot on them (they frown on it still) - unless they're doing something REALLY stupid, Ricker's pot humor is pretty natural here.

It's also been pretty much assumed generally by the time a young person starts listening to KISW that they've already smoked a few joints/bowls. KISW is not KCMS. Or Radio Disney..

I can understand how hearing someone talking a story on the radio about the eighth of skunky weed they just scored and then walking into a convenience store where God and everybody can smell it might titillate some listeners and absolutely horrify others. But then again, this is SEATTLE........and 4/20 (April 20, also known as Stoner New Year) is coming up Wednesday. Tune around most active/alternative rock stations coast to coast on that day and you'll find a jillion, if usually far more sublime references to it. Especially around 4:20 PM local time....

Believe me, I listened to Ricker and to his credit, he knows the line. He never once DIRECTLY promoted pot. But he talks about his experiences. You can take that as you will. But I'm not going to fault him for talking openly about pot. And talking frankly from his perspective on pot (it doesn't ALWAYS have to be grossly negative.) No matter how uncomfortable that makes some feel. There are MANY people in his audience who understand him.

If you vehemently disagree, the tuning/volume buttons/knobs are right there.

Use them.

Wow; and there you have it folks.. And some wonder why Bong is so far off on his frequent takes regarding the radio industry. Clearly the mental focus is elsewhere.

Gees Bongster,

I know this is the wrong format to argue weed usage, but seriously, do you have young teens in the Bong Household? If so, do you smoke weed with your teens? I have known parents who have smoked pot with their kids in the past. Guess where one couple has their teens today? One’s in Shelton and the other kid is dead. Pot is truly a gateway drug. If you don’t see that I feel sorry for you dude.

I have noticed you have tuned down your “time to have a toke” thing you used to put on your posts when you were “Original Larry”, so you are showing progress. On a positive note, I find you an interesting addition to this site and hope you continue even if I don’t agree.

Regarding tuning in to KISW, if Ricker is on, I won’t be.

KC Radio Nut-

Sorry. Cause does not equal effect here. The kids are not in jail/ dead because the folks smoked pot with them...there are probably a LOT of reasons, but to lay that at the feet of a pretty benign herb is a little nuts. And pot as a gateway drug has been debunked medically for decades. Pot has essentially been decriminalized in Seattle, Portland, SF, Denver. Maybe not Kansas City, yet.

Sorry to be rude here, but the type of thinking that you are expressing has a LOT to do with the horribly costly and largely counterproductive "War on Drugs" over the last 40 years. There are an awful lot of otherwise productive members of society locked up because of ridiculous and misguided thinking. We prop up terrible governments, waste Billions of dollars, etc. For what?

I don't smoke pot. I choose not to. I used to once in a while; just doesn't fit my lifestyle now. I have a 21 year old son...if you gave me the choice of him being a tobacco addict, a daily alcohol drinker, or a daily stoner...I would choose the latter. Less damage to him, and less risk to society.

Ricker is entertaining. He is a character, literally. I find him funny in small doses. But that character is seen as a character by kids as well...and if you think they are so naive as to hold him up as a role model, you haven't been around any teens lately. All the kids I know are far too media savvy to be swayed by a cartoon like the Ricker character.
