Ricker

Yeah, I don't think Ricker's act turns kids into pot heads any more than Dean Martin's act turned them into alcoholics. I haven't heard Ricker in years but it sounds like his act is pretty much the same as it was last time I heard it. He and I worked at the same station, and while his act wasn't my thing (I'm out of his demo), he worked very hard and I thought that he did a very good show for his listeners.

Well, in a town that has one of the biggest yearly pro-marijuana rallies in the world (Seattle Hempfest) and the Seattle cops usually don't do anything with anybody who has less than a few grams of pot on them (they frown on it still) - unless they're doing something REALLY stupid, Ricker's pot humor is pretty natural here.

It's also been pretty much assumed generally by the time a young person starts listening to KISW that they've already smoked a few joints/bowls. KISW is not KCMS. Or Radio Disney..

I can understand how hearing someone talking a story on the radio about the eighth of skunky weed they just scored and then walking into a convenience store where God and everybody can smell it might titillate some listeners and absolutely horrify others. But then again, this is SEATTLE........and 4/20 (April 20, also known as Stoner New Year) is coming up Wednesday. Tune around most active/alternative rock stations coast to coast on that day and you'll find a jillion, if usually far more sublime references to it. Especially around 4:20 PM local time....

Believe me, I listened to Ricker and to his credit, he knows the line. He never once DIRECTLY promoted pot. But he talks about his experiences. You can take that as you will. But I'm not going to fault him for talking openly about pot. And talking frankly from his perspective on pot (it doesn't ALWAYS have to be grossly negative.) No matter how uncomfortable that makes some feel. There are MANY people in his audience who understand him.

If you vehemently disagree, the tuning/volume buttons/knobs are right there.

Use them.

Spot on... Spot on. :)

Gees Indigo,

Maybe I was not clear in my post. I’m not opposed to an adult choosing to smoke pot. I “experimented” with it when I came home from Viet Nam. And like you, I choose not to smoke weed. I am opposed to young teens being introduced to the virtues of pot by adults (Ricker) giving them the impression that walking around in a daze is OK when they should be trying to get a high school diploma. If I apply your logic to alcohol consumption (as you did), I guess it would be OK for a 13 year old to be drunk. Go figure…

PS: I also enjoy your posts.

I did misunderstand your post, KC. I get somewhat riled up when I hear the term "gateway drug" as I really do think the term is a "smokescreen" or a cover for poor political decisions. With a lot of experience in the addiction field, it seems pretty clear to me that people with the disease of addiction will find their drug or drugs. And someone like Ricker is not going to have much of an influence either way.

And, yes, I did use the term "smokescreen" on 4/20. ;D

.....and here we have the making of the ricker fan club, w/bongwater as pres, and idaho as vice.....
yep, i never have used that tuning/volume knob to hear the ricker. when is he on? i'll give him 3 minutes of time waste to make me a ricker fan.
a lot of these shock jockers ratings game schtick, is to exploit your naivety, based upon the shock value of the subject matter, and make the listener think, that they are one of you. yep, when i was 15, that stoner talk was some really neat subject matter boys. but, that brain rot radio schtick act gets old quick!

as far as bongwaters #1 cause in life, "the legalization of marijuana". it aint gonna happen. there is too much profit for players in high places in this world, by keeping it illegal. and besides, if it were legal, there would be that many more stoned drivers on my road w/ high beams on, and runnin too slow. i get enough of that every night as is on HWY 2! but, i will meet you half way and sign any petition for the legalization of industrial hemp, marijuanas non THC cousin. of course, that aint gonna happen either, due to the same reason, as i mentioned above.

Well, marijuana legalization is not my #1 Cause In Life (although I am a card carrying NORML member, so it's somewhere in the Top 10.) And since it is 4/20, right around 4:20 PM today, any hip rock station of any sort is going to play something weed related (of which, the selection has grown pretty vast in just the last 20 years alone.)

Haven't listened yet today, but KPTK's fine syndicated hosts usually mention 4/20 in some respect every 20th of April, often bringing on somebody from NORML or LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) to discuss the marijuana debate.

It's all a part of today's culture now. And it isn't going away. Bills calling for marijuana legalization will be introduced every year. You have to admit for a bunch of lazy good for nothing stoners, they're getting pretty hard to ignore.

It's GOING to happen. Inevitably.

But anyway, back to my regular web site:
