Rickey Smiley lands at 95.7 JAMZ - Birmingham???

Just got wind that 95.7's main man Buckwilde is leaving B'ham headed to Dallas to head up mornings at K104. Hmmm, remember Cox has Rickey Smiley parked at sister station Neo-Soul 102.1 WENN which has a weak signal. Not sure what would happen to the rest of the morning staff, but I can see Cox putting Rickey Smiley on 95.7 JAMZ pretty soon.

OH WELL, Cox Birmingham sucks anyways. Any person can better program their iPod better than that horribly programmed station.

Their downfall was when they took Chris Arnold and Sam Putney off of the show. Speaking about K104 of course.

What's that got to do with the new morning show at 95.7? The station can't suck too much, considering its a perennial top-5 station 12+.

And last I checked, iPods don't draw ratings.

In a bit of a surprise, it's not the syndicated Rickey Smiley Show after all...but it is another well known Birmingham-born comic: Last Comic Standing's Roy Wood, Jr.

Peep the 95-7 Jamz website, where the talent formerly known as 'Buck Wilde' calls in to let Birminghamsters know of his whereabouts:

Wow, slap in the face to Smiley!

Or just that Wood, Jr. had more buzz surrounding him from earlier this summer. Or that they wanted a smoother transition from Sammy Mack's departure to Dallas. Cox actually deserves credit for giving the greenlight to a new local morning show. If they'd simply pushed up the Smiley show from WENN @ 102.1 (you know they had to be considering it), every FM urban in metro Birmingham would be helmed with syndicated morning shows--with the exception of WJLD @ 104.1.

Speaking of 1400 WJLD...that's a station where the late Roy Wood Sr. could be heard many moons ago, plus years of work in Chicago while helping to found what would eventually become American Urban Radio Network. There's easily a specific pride involved with Roy Jr. agreeing to take a a prime radio gig in his hometown, amongst his other comedy ventures.

I believe 95.7 JAMZ is the only Cox Urban to have a local morning show. Cox isn't crazy at all because some how they wanted a piece of Rickey Smiley's nationwide success. However, the Neo Soul format where they put him onwasn't the best move. Cox wants all of the African American audience in Birmingham I see, but boy could Citadel attack!!

You know 95.7 is the only station in Birmingham that plays both hip-hop and contemporary R&B, so it wins by default. They have some decent talent on-air, but the musical programming...

Also PPM will decipher if the station is a true "top 5" station in the 12+.

I'll be there for Magic City Classic weekend. Of course everybody will be tuned into 95.7 for the nonstop mix weekend and party info since the rest of the Urban stations will sound as if it's bed time.
