Ricky The K's Solid Gold Time Machine

I had seen some previous posts about Ricky The K's Solid Gold Time Machine at http://60sradio.com so I decided to check it out. I ended up subscribing. I think that it is better money spent versus XM and Sirius because of a wider selection of music, not to mention the old commercials, jingles and fun personality. The show reminds me of mid 60s WABC.

I am totally aware of the battle between WCFL and WLS. My opinion is that WCFL was the better sounding station when it was programmed by Ken Draper. What WCFL was in 1967 was the best that either station ever sounded. Remember, it was WCFL that brought Larry Lujack to Chicago from Boston to do the all night show. It always amazed me that two stations owned by the same company (ABC) could sound so different. While WABC, New York, was a dynamic sounding radio station, WLS, Chicago, in the same period, in the 60s, was pretty bland and sterile by comparison.

I'm thinking more of the 70s WLS.
I started listening aroundd 1973.
Plus, WCFL didn't reach where I lived so I guess I kept
up more with WLS.

The two radio stations were relatively equal in the 1973 era and around this time
Larry Lujack went back to WCFL. This was the era of Super CFL. 1973 for radio in general was worse than 1967 because the music was worse and radio was going away from big personality disc jockeys.

In your continuing Promotions for this Ricky the K who requires $12.95 a month for his INTERNET show, keep in mind rule # 6 about cross posting on other boards. Look to the left of the screen under the navigation heading. By the way, how did Ricky get many of our email addresses anyway?

In 1973, you had Fred Winston, John Landecker, Lujack and many
more still doing a great job at WLS. True, the boss jocks days
were over but personality radio was still around.

Draper did a helluva job. No question. But, so did John Rook in the early 70s for the brief period he was the PD of WCFL. What sets them apart perhaps is that Draper's 'CFL was more of an artistic success -- the station other radio people liked -- while Super 'CFL was an unqualified ratings and commercial success, Billboard's Radio Station Of The Year in 1973. Late 1972 into 1973, with a lineup of Bob Dearborn in the morning, Art Roberts in midday, Larry Lujack in the afternoon and Big Ron O'Brien in the evening, 'CFL was beating 'LS in every time slot -- something they never achieved under Draper, as great as his 'CFL was.
