Riddle Me This

WHTT, as Mix 104 point 1, is either the most adventurous or the most disjointed format I've heard since Jack debuted a few years ago.

PS: I didn't really want to start a WHTT thread again as much as I was just tired of seeing the thread about the incompetent female talk show host at the top of the page. The board appears to be in a lull.

Flamingo Pink and Electric Blue?

Well, it sure ain't Oldies anymore. The new logo, and the new website color scheme seem to indicate that guys are not the intended audience.

The new website is a lot more visually interesting than either WJYE or Star. The big banner ad at the top of the Star home page is really annoying.

Sometimes the variety is refreshing, but I also find myself tuning elsewhere more often than I used to. Then again, I don't seem to be in the target demo.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was just one station for your target demo? Now is sounds like there are 3 stations that could all possibly end up playing the same song at the same time. Just amazing!

Aunt Helen loves the new color scheme, as does Cousin Bruce. Maybe Mix 104 is targeting Cheektowaga? Aunt Helen is long out of the 25-54 demo and prefers Eddie Blazanczyk to the B-52's. Cousin Bruce, our company's "interior guy," has a swagger in his step when he listens and he does listen. Come to think of it, Cousin Bruce always has a swagger in his step. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Mix 104 sounds like it's ready to go toe-to-toe with WJYE and WTSS. Will this be a ladies' choice or a cat fight?

97-Pop?

Well, one thing I've noticed is that 97-Rock seems to be adding some of the oldies that WHTT has largely abandoned. I'm hearing The Guess Who, Zombies, Three Dog Night, and other pop hits from the '68 - '72 era that I don't recall hearing there before.

...WHTT is now another "At work station..."

They're all "at work' stations. Always have been. You simply may not have been aware of it. "Away from home" or "at work" listening accounts for significant Time Spent Listening (TSL) and quarter hours in Arbitron diaries and quite likely, PPM's.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, of the available 80 quarter hours in a day (5 a.m. to 1 p.m.), 32 quarter hours are available for "at work" listening (8 hours x 4 quarters=32.) That's 40 per cent! Multiply that by 5 days: 160 quarter hours per work-week. Lots of TSL, lots of Average Persons, lots of AQH Shares up for grabs. It's quite a competition.

Morning and afternoon drive get lots of attention, but the real trench war, especially for music stations, is fought in middays and weekends too, particularly Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Just a few reasons why every radio station is an "at work" station and music stations position themselves as such.

Actually, I knew WHTT to be an "At work" station.
I should reword that to being a more "modern" at work station.

I guess the lighter side of the former WHTT format will surface on WJYE and the rest will end up other places...

I wonder if WSPQ will suddenly pop up in the work places that previously had WHTT tuned in...? (WSPQ through the pc, respectfully)

Probably not. The station's rimshot air signal signal is barely a blip on the radar screen in Western New York, primarily of interest to house painters and denizens of this board. There are far better oldies and classic hits stations already streaming on line, such as KJR-FM, The Drive and Scott Shannon's website. By comparison, WSPQ is rather meager.

Well, as long as it catches the attention of *some* good hard working people, I guess.
Where does WJJL fit into all of this...? Or does it?

Yezi. You seem to be so sincere in your posts. But I must say I wonder if you really know radio. Please, please, please. WSPQ, WJJL, WLVL and any other small town AM station in Western New York will have NO impact on the Buffalo radio scene. They have their place in their respective communities. But even if WSPQ was able to replicate the classic hits format of WHTT in the late '80s, there's no way the station is getting an audience, either on its signal or on the web in Buffalo. Look at a ratings book, if you have one, or go to an industry web site (All Access or Radio and Records), count down the top 15 radio stations, throw in the three public stations whose ratings are publicly released, and those are the stations that are players in this market. I'm just sayin'......

Man, I wish this web site allowed us to go back and edit. My sentence on public radio stations should read "are NOT publicly released." Sorry about that.

"Where does WJJL fit into this?...or does it?"
'Nuff said. (We all know it doesn't...always good to learn how it might.)

Your attack reflects that of a person who honestly believes that WNSA was the greatest thing to ever happen to Buffalo. Jeez!

And there's a HUGE difference between wondering, and *sometimes* wondering...even then, one *should* be able to understand the difference between always not knowing radio, and sometimes having posts that are not constant with the ability to demonstrate ability to know radio...

I'm merely pointing out that those who want something that is no longer maintained by a major player do have choice on the dial...
I draged the internet into this because I'm not aware of WSPQ's signal strength, in respect to former WHTT listening range, adding in the fact that it's AM, which does not pick up all that well in the office place anyway...

Yez,

There seems to be some kind of disconnect here. If posters don't live in Buffalo, Rochester or Western New York, it's difficult to understand the entire market. It may be that you live in Canada and hear the big Buffalo and Rochester signals but can't hear the AM and FM rimshots. From my vantage point, there wasn't any "attack" by Phil. In fact, his post appeared benevolent.

Yes, benevolent, but in a very impious manner.
There doesn't seem to be any apreciation for any other point I've made on any other topic on this particular board.
I'm still left with the feeling that it's *all* points made on *all* topics, not just a specific error due to my present location (or respectfully, what ever the case may be).

Thanks Sparechange. As always, your input is highly respected.

I'm sorry you perceived my post as an attack. I, for one, always strive to make sure this board doesn't devolve into one in which people are flaming at each other. So, my apologies. It's just that I would assume most posters to this board who live in Buffalo know that WSPQ and WJJL have not and will never be players in the Buffalo market. And when you asked about WJJL, after you asked about WSPQ, I just felled compelled to add my two cents.

One more thing on a totally different topic today. Did y'all see the article in the Buffalo News technology section today about a radio? A mono radio with a dial tuner that sits on a table top. I guess it's a great sounding radio. It was heartening to see our century old technology highlighted in a section of the News dedicated to new and emerging products. Radio, it's the new iPod! :)
