Wow. KNBR, KCBS, and KGO.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was a groundwave with the good conductivity out there.

BTW, how do you set that particular kind of tuner so you can get on to the AM band?

I click 'AM' but the frequency in the window doesn't change.

Are you the only user? You have to dial up the frequency first. Type in (.540) for 540 AM, (1.100) for 1100 AM, etc. Are you on there right now? I can help you out!

I messed around with that Ridgecrest tuner one night over the summer out of curiosity, and did manage to get KOMO 1000 in.

My comments on a few ...

"530-trace of a TIS (but WHERE? Maybe pianoplayer88key can help me out here...)" I'd have to listen in the middle of the day, and I'm not always on then. (I wonder if there's any possibility of the LAX airport breaking through? They play a some music bumpers, and run 100 watts. I can hear them in El Cajon, CA, with a setup that I'm guessing isn't quite as good as Token's, with some difficulty.)
"620-KIGS Hanford trace" Are you sure it's not XESS from between Rosarito and Ensenada? According to Radio-Locator, KIGS is off the air. I believe (contrary to what the FCC and R-L say) that XESS runs 5 kW omni fulltime.
"660-KWVE Oildale" A couple decades ago I used to be able to very faintly hear a trace of this in El Cajon when it was KGDP in Orcutt (near Santa Maria).
"670-KIRN Los Angeles" is actually licensed to Simi Valley.
"680-KNBR San Francisco" Nice. I've occasionally heard this in El Cajon around midday using one of my Tecsuns and the Select-A-Tenna, even though 77kW 690 XEWW is just 32 miles S/SW of me.
"700-weak carrier on CW mode" Could this possibly be KALL North Salt Lake City, UT? I've faintly heard them in El Cajon around midday, even with XEWW just 32 miles in the opposite direction. (Looking at the Radio-Locator maps, though, the more likely station appears to be KMBX in Soledad, CA.)
"730-(too much IBOC for XEEBC)" I'd be a bit surprised if XEEBC would make it up there anyway. They're quite weak here in El Cajon, and I'm located where I can null KBRT's IBOC and still get near-max signal from XEEBC.
"740-KCBS San Francisco and KBRT Catalina Island" KBRT is licensed to Avalon (which is on Catalina).
"790-KABC Los Angeles + XESU Mexicali" XESU makes it all the way up there? It's just barely audible under KABC here in El Cajon, requiring at least a Select-A-Tenna or GE Superadio 3 to manage anything more than a carrier. I wonder if it's the good ground conductivity in the Imperial Valley? (although the Coachella Valley just NW of Salton Sea, according to David Eduardo, is terrible. Speaking of which, in case David reads this thread - a hypothetical question... if a frequency below 600 kHz was available for K-News (or whatever news/talk station) to have 50 kW into an omni-directional antenna with an efficiency of 512 mV/m @ 1 km for 1 kW (which would work out to 3620 mV/m @ 1 km for 50 kW), would it cover the entire Coachella Valley area with a local-grade signal (10 or 15 mV/m or better)? Or is the conductivity really *that* bad so it wouldn't?)
"990-XECL Mexicali" Another Mexicali that gets out farther than I'd expect. It's definitely stronger here in El Cajon than XESU, though. KTMS Santa Barbara can be heard under it with the right setup, though.
"1050-KCAA Loma Linda + XED Mexicali" Interesting how XED is heard PAST where KCAA's local area is supposed to be.
"1110-KDIS Los Angeles" KDIS is actually licensed to Pasadena. I frequently listen to this station, and even have a preset on my Sony SRF-M37W, in spite of 10 kW 1130 KSDO being only 6.3 miles north of me.
"1140-KNWQ Palm Springs + KYDZ Las Vegas" KYDZ is actually licensed to North Las Vegas. I occasionally listen to this one at night, although splatter from KSDO is often a serious problem especially when the pest is playing music.
"1280-KFRN Los Angeles + another station, maybe KDOX trace" KFRN seems to get out to the desert quite well for being only 1 kW in Long Beach (south of L.A.)
"1390-KLTX Long Beach" Was it all KLTX? (Would be the same programming as 1130 KSDO.) Or was there any chance of 5 kW omnidirectional co-channel XEKT Tecate breaking through?
"1410-trace" I think the likely ones would be KERI Bakersfield (religious) or KCAL Redlands (spanish).
"1510-KSPA San Bernardino" This one's licensed to Chino. It can be faintly heard here with a good setup.

530-could hear a voice but it was too weak in AM. Could only hear in USB, couldn't decipher any words.
700-carrier only, no voices. I could not decipher who it was.
790-I heard SS under KABC. I don't think anyone in CA has SS on 790, so it was Mexico.
1390-KLTX was the only one heard.
1410-I wanted KCAL, but only got a trace.

Tonight KOMO came in like a local around 5:30, about 30 min before sunset. Sounded like I was a couple of hundred miles from Seattle, actually...

Crainbebo, I went to use the receiver today and the white box was blank, so I thought I was the only one there. Then I entered a frequency and then your name was there.

I guess you were already there first but I didn't see you until I started tuning so I left to let you use the receiver.

Sorry about that.

I was already there, monitoring the CQWW ham radio contest. 15 and 10 meters are open to South America, Europe and parts of Africa.

ALSO LOGGED TODAY (11:55-12:10PM PT)
700 music which is likely KMBX Soledad and not KALL SLC
750 KHWG Fallon, NV very poor. Received a full ID last night close to 1AM here in WA.
1220 was KHTS Canyon Country and not KWKU.
1410 ended up being KCAL Redlands.
1480 was new to the daytime log, KVNR Santa Ana with ethnic programs.

Crainbebo....

On my drive up I-15 from Hesperia to Las Vegas in September, I had KCBQ on 1170 for about 20 minutes at the beginning of the journey before it faded. This was around 8:30 a.m. PDT, so I suppose it could've been skywave. Still, I would have expected you might hear it on a global tuners rig. Although, that said, I've noticed them seemingly on their night pattern during daylight hours on past So-Cal trips. My guess is their day pattern might be a little difficult to maintain.

I also think your 620 might have been XESS. 620 during the daytime used to be pretty empty on my travels to that area, but within the past few years, XESS has been easily audible daytime over a fairly wide area. Something of a pest to be blunt about it. So the assumption they're at 5kw makes sense to me.

Deciding to do another daytime scan, almost a year later. Antenna has changed, used to be a triple band dipole/80M loop - now a Wellbrook ALA1530S beaming NE/SW. Added at the request of several AM DXers.
