Rihanna - Only Girl In The World

I first heard this song on 92.3 Now FM this week and didn't even think it was Rihanna, it sounded like the typical dance song. This song just goes to show that the dance format is becoming mainstream with several pop artists embracing this style of music. We had Taio Cruz, Ne-Yo, Usher, David Guetta, Flo Rida, Enrique Iglesias, Mike Posner, Adam Lambert, and now Rihanna. With those artists' latest hits in rotation on CHR, maybe a couple tracks that had their roots on the dance charts wouldn't sound out of place. Stereo Love, Body Shots, Dirty Talk, Commander, One, Higher State, Happiness, Better Than Her should also fit with today's hits. We only have a couple CHR/Rhythmic stations mixing a lot of dance (Wild and Party, and also Power 96). I'm sure the public will embrace our brand of dance if they love the dance songs that are already on the CHR charts.

RIHANNA
This is exactly what I thought when I first heard it on the 12:20 Party Mix at noon. For some reason, I thought for a split second while first hearing it that it was Beyonce finally coming around to the true dance sound. I was excited about the song itself, but other than that, it wasn't too too big of a deal to me since I'm beginning to see this "new generation sound" as part of the norm. I am glad that it is rapidly becoming a hit though. I'm glad it is a straight up dance sound that also sounds very decent, and to me it's a lot better than Neyo's "Beautiful Monster", which, for some reason, quickly faded from being one of my favorites. Looks like we've come a long way since early 2009 when "Poker face" making it had everyone collapsing in amazement and disbelief.

I am very glad that Usher finally came around to the dance sound because I thought he was going to be one of those people like Mariah who just "refuse" to "go any faster". He tried a semi/quasi dance hit in 2007 or 2008 that didn't really go anywhere, then kept putting out all these albums with one uptempo and a bunch of slow songs and I didn't think he would ever change. Then out of no where, "Dj got us falling in love" pops out and I was thinking "wait, but did I miss something?" because I was expecting him to release another slow hit from his album. Anyway, I like where we are right now and all the deeper, more creative melodies being used. I also hope Kelly Rowland's "commander" makes it because that's another one worthy of attention. It would be nice to see her make it on top for once.
 
We started hitting this one hard at The Vibe last Tuesday. Fun song... would like a tighter edit though. There are moments of 'why did they put that in there'
 
And that's why it needed a tighter edit.
 
For once, I strongly agree with everything that has been said about it on Wikipedia (as of Tue, 09/21/10). However, I am surprised by the producer since I would've guessed David Guetta produced it, due to the fact that it's blatantly obvious that the "throbbing bass beat" style idea was straight up copied from David Guetta's "sexy chick". I'm not too disappointed that the Wikipedia writer failed to notice this, but I'm shocked that they didn't when most dj's I've heard mix this nationwide did. Unless I really had to, I probably would've never tried to mix "only girl" and "Sexy chick" together since in is 126bpm and the other is 130, but I see other dj's are doing it because they notice the similarities.

Looks like the David Guetta "Sexy back" throbbing bass beat" style has become a new trend - being that I have quite a few songs, both on the mainstream and non mainstream dance sides, that contain that style. I'm not going to lie - I do like it much much better than the whole quilted soft Rihanna "disturbia", Danity Kane "damaged", Lady Gaga "poker face"....etc. quasi sound that was going on during the times when people were still scared to just come out and sound straight up dance.
 
When 3:57 is too long for the material being presented.
 
Ha, I think readers are scratching their head at this point. Any other station on the planet, is or will be playing Rihanna's "Only Girl" the way it is delivered on the single, or the Promo Only issue, I Tunes, whatever....at 3:57 (unless the station pitches their music....if so I'd guess 3:52). The only exception I can see, is they may do an intro edit for a talk over. I have never heard of a PD or MD trying to shorten a song because they felt the material wasn't worthy of the length (at least not something under 4 min). There's plenty of records on the air that are questionable for radio, but they don't get hacked over opinion. I could understand if this were a remix, but its the original version.
 
It happens all the time. I'm saying that IDJMG should have tightened the track for radio release. In the dance world, there are several songs released for radio that are poorly structured. I'm not the only one who will edit to fit our sound.
 
It sounds like a direct rip off of Kelly Rowland's Commander. I keep waiting to Hear Commando when Rihanna is singing the chorus.
 
Well finally someone at X-MIX realized the similarity in "Sexy chick" and "only girl" productions. Only one question though: I wonder why American urban formats can't sound more like the X-MIX URBAN series? Is Usher's "OMG" the only electro song in the world that can make it on urban stations in the U.S.?
 
Could it have anything to do with Usher being a core artist on Urban??? Brain-dead programmers know Usher, they don't know Guetta or Rowland (yes I know her history).
 
Ive already heard it on Sirius.. THE HEAT.... it is a rip off.
 
Speaken of the heat I made a thread on the Rhythmic board about how Disappointed I am with SATs Urban Rhythmic Channels,,, when I had XM years back THE HEAT was Hits and HIP HOP and played alot of CHR/DANCE/POP Crossovers,,, now the station plays no dance at all unless you count the new Rhianna, and Usher and Pitbull,,, Why not be like a Party station type format.. I do like Hip Hop and R&B as long as its not that hardcore gangbangin crap,, but Urban music sounds so much better with uptempo hits mixed in. I dont expect them to play Katy Perry,, but they could play FLo RIDA,, D Guetta, Far East Movement, Keisha,, LMFAO,, and tons of other Urban friendly Dance POP.

The Heat even used to play Avril and LIL MAMA-Girlfriend Remix... and I forget the song or artist,, but it was...oh nvmnd....Point is they need to play more uptempo hits and less slow jamz,, how dare they call it a rhythmic when it sounds more Urban AC,

Rhythmic is a "tricky" format. Hot 97 in New York is Rhythmic and they don't play much dance or even sound like The Heat, either. I should clarify that "tricky" is a convenient word I used to conserve time in my explanation..

It would be nice for them to give the same amount of attention to "DJ Got us falling in love" by Usher - and some of Akon and other urban / former urban artists out there as well. I wonder how Lil Jon and Jermaine Dupri feel about their latest releases not getting urban attention, the same way their previous hip hop, r&b, AND even booty bass flava did on urban's back when booty bass was big. ..And how could urban/hip hop format programmers as a whole not know Guetta by now? It seems as if ever since booty bass died, no other forms of uptempo dance styles (even the urban sounds) have been considered on hip hop leaning urbans. Is booty bass the only uptempo urban sound that could ever work in the history of urban mankind? What's funny is that today's electro hip hop and baltimore club music and remixes seem more popular and nationally known and played than the booty bass that received regional (mixshow) play in the late 90's, yet urbans today seem to be all mostly slow paced hip hop and r&b (even during mix shows!!) while 10 to 15 years ago they were all over the bass sound. Why does it seem that only the hip hop and r&b is evolving on urbans? Clearly there's just about as much electro hip hop and dance now as there was booty bass back in the late 90's for urban mixshow play.
