Man, this has been a rough year for TV legends. Mike Wallace, Dick Clark, Don Cornelius, George "Goober" Lindsey, and now, one of the greatest of them all, albeit it appears that it was simply old age that claimed him.

Don't forget Earl Scruggs, of Scruggs and Flatt from the Beverley Hillbillies.

We have lost Richard Dawson as well...this is indeed a sad year for classic TV.

I am surprised that none of the cable channels are running Andy Griffith-Matlock marathons? I thought TV Land had the rights to Andy Griffith and The Hallmark Channel had the rights to Matlock?
TV Land is showing a marathon of the Andy Griffith Show this morning and WGN is airing a Matlock marathon today>

At 2 PM Eastern today, July 4th, ME Tv is airing 2 Andy Griffith-related shows on their channel. The episode of "Gomer Pyle" where Opie runs away to join the Marines will air at 2, and the episode of "Make Room for Daddy" where Griffith first appears will air at 2:30.

P.S. Actually there will also be a "Hawaii 5-0" and a "Mod Squad" with Griffith as a guest.

What I personally found so endearing about Sheriff Taylor's character was his wisdom. It rose above the fray of whatever complications the storylines comically explored. But rather than imposing his wisdom on others, the sheriff would use it to inspire his hapless cohorts to solve their problems themselves. In the end, they did so, unaware they had even been so wisely coached. Ever known somebody like that in real life?

I wonder what would have happened if Jerry Van Dyke had replaced Don Knotts rather than Jack Burns as deputy on The Andy Griffith Show. I would presume that the Warren character wasn't that popular among fans which was why Burns left. And speaking of which, Jack Burns wasn't Don Knotts either.

As for Andy Griffith and Elinor Donahue, I also presume that she was fired from the show by Griffith for some reason or another in that Griffith didn't like Donahue or vice versa. Kind of like William Frawley and Vivian Vance, worked well together on I Love Lucy, but in real life hated one another.

I've wondered why ME-TV doesn't carry The Andy Griffith Show, since they have Danny Thomas, Gomer Pyle, and other CBS owned shows from that period, unless TV Land has exclusive national rights.

I watched parts of the marathon on TV Land this morning, and there were some great episodes, other than being edited too much as usual. I hope when they do the weekend marathon that they'll have some of the episodes that don't get shown as often, and not hack them up.

Actually, his Gomer Pyle appearance amounts to little more than a last-scene cameo. (Obviously, ME-TV had to scrape around to find enough Griffith-related material in their holdings to fill a tribute.) Nonetheless, it is a good choice as it rather compactly illustrates the Sheriff Taylor character. Sgt. Carter is convinced that Opie's father will administer a harsh punishment (both verbal and physical), so much so that he tries to intervene when Andy arrives, then is astounded as he calmly and simply asks the boy if he's ready to go home, and walks off without a single raised hand (or voice).

BTW, if you've never heard it, you owe it to yourself to seek out Griffith's 1953 comedy routine "What It Was, Was Football," the recording that first started bringing him national attention. It's one of the funniest comic monologues you will ever hear.

Here is a filmed version of "WIWWF" that I've never seen before, but it is pretty good.

Don't forget Frank Cady, who was Sam Drucker in the "Hillbillies" trilogy of shows, "Beverly Hillbillies" "Petticoat Junction" and "Green Acres". Frank actually played the town drunk in the Andy Taylor episode of "Make Room for Daddy".

WGN airs Matlock.

Actually, Hallmark Movie Channel also air "Matlock" as well.

It looks like HMC is running a "Matlock" marathon today (July 4th, 2012)

Jack Burns was just not funny period. That's the reason he didn't last very long.

Remember that besides Don Knotts, Ron Howard, and of course Andy, Elinor Donahue was the only other cast member in the history of the show to share the opening billing. Donahue already was known to TV audiences for her role on "Father Knows Best" when "The Andy Griffith Show" debuted in 1961. This is before Don Knotts became famous.

From Wikipedia:
After twelve appearances in the first season, Ellie disappeared with no explanation offered the audience. Behind the scenes, Donahue decided she and Griffith lacked the chemistry to make their on-screen romantic relationship credible and she decided to leave. Griffith later admitted that it was his own fault because he had a hard time showing affection on-screen, and as a result, the relationship didn't appear real or believable.

Sorry but I find that excuse a bit hard to swallow.

If you compare the characters of "Ellie" and "Helen Crump" Helen was boring while Ellie displayed more of an exciting personality. I just think that Griffith and the show's producer wanted Donahue out...so she was fired after the 1961 season ended.

Yeah, Warren wasn't Barney "a-tall". Jack Burns wasn't as funny without his pal Avery Schreiber. (Avery, on the other hand, could be funny solo.) And that "Huh?" "Yeah" "Huh?" "Yeah" schtick was funny with Avery, but not with Andy, and it became annoying very quickly.

In Jerry's one appearance the running joke was that he would start to say something, then forget what it was he was he was trying to say. However, he proved he could have been a competent deputy by the end of the show. His character would have needed some expansion, but I think that, given Andy's longtime real-life friendship with both Dick and Jerry Van Dyke, it could have worked; Jerry has said he wished he'd taken the part rather than "My Mother The Car." And Andy once admitted that he was partially to blame for Jack Burns' failure; he and the writers were giving Burns lines that fit Don Knotts but not Burns. And Burns' character, Warren Ferguson, was somewhat overbearing.

As for celebrity deaths in 2012, we've also overlooked Davy Jones of the Monkees.

He also played a drunk in the Mt. Pilot jail in the episode of TAGS where Andy and Barney go to Mt. Pilot to bring Otis back to Mayberry and he is sharing a jail cell with Otis.

I totally agree. I had never seen the Ellie episodes until years after the original run of The Andy Griffith Show eneded. I believe the show premiered in 1960 - I was 8, so it was probably past my bedtime. When I finallly saw the Donahue episodes, I was impressed. Their relationship was new and tentative - kid of a budding romance, and very sweet. It also changed by opinion of Donahue. I always thought "Princess" (Father Knows Best was a brat and needed to be slapped. I think the chemistry between Andy and Elinor was just fine - much better in fact than Andy's chemistry with Aneta Corsault, which seemed non-existent - mostly because Corsault played Helen as kind of humorlous and scolding.

I never understood the Helen Crump character. Just a humorless character. That's when the show started to go down hill. My personal favorite was Miss Peggy -the nurse (& Tatum O'Neil mother BTW).
The Andy Griffith show was a family favorite in my house while growing up. It was the one show everyone agreed on. I got to "stay up" and the family gathered around the TV set to watch it on Monday night. A weekly family event.
Double sad for me & my childhood this week. I just returned from my home town. My house I grew up in was a showplace. The grounds were kept perfect. The house was state of the art beautiful when it was built. The current owner let it disintegrate and now it will be torn down. It was very depressing to see. Damn, I couldn't even find where my tree house was.
