From my own experience and memories of Betty... she told me she was born in a little town north of Esmeraldas, Ecuador, on the Pacific Coast. By the early 60's, her family had moved to Quito and around 1964 she became an announcer at one of the smaller of the 42 AM stations in the market, doing a music show.
She had a marvelous, distinctive voice and did voice work for advertisers as well. That is how I first met her, in 1965, when she would occasional do commercials for my station, HCRM "Radio Musical". Even then, at age 17, she was a real professional "radio person" and very talented.
In the early 70's, she moved to Miami and became the secretary and receptionist and office manager for Herb Dolgoff's WCMQ, the Hialeah-licensed Class A FM that was the first Spanish language FM in Miami. She soon became the mid-day announcer, and later the Program Director. She remained with "FM 92" as PD and mid-day announcer through the sale to SBS and beyond.
In 1995, I was part of the team that put WAMR 107.5 on the air. Bill Tanner and I brought in Betty to do the mid-day show. She continued to hold that shift until a few weeks ago, an amazing and highly rated 40-year run in the 10 to 3 daypart.
As someone who knew her for just short of 50 years, I can say that she will be missed... but we have great memories of the good radio she made happen
