RIP Bob Doll

Sad to hear that Bob Doll passed away Tuesday night. (He had been feeling poorly for a few days, then had a fatal heart attack.)

Bob was the first voice on WEKY in Richmond when the station launched on October 17, 1953. He authored the book "Sparks Out of the Plowed Ground", the history of America's small town radio stations, and at least four other radio books.

Besides WEKY, Bob was also with several other stations in Kentucky and Ohio. After he sold his stations in 1983, Bob started the Small Market Radio Newsletter.

Did he ever own WTRE Greensburg,IN?

I originally posted this on the Texas board.

I've yet to find a thread about Bob Doll's passing which surprises me. If somebody knows where the Bob Doll tribute thread is on Radio-Info, please let me know. Nonetheless, given that Bob lived in Seguin, TX, I figured the Texas board would be a logical place to write something. I'm saddened about Bob Doll's passing. In 2006, my radio mentor loaned me a copy of his book "A Perfect Union" which was about the history of WBCU in Union, South Carolina. I was living in Tennessee at the time. That book sat on my dresser for about three months before I started to read it. I really liked the book, especially the parts about Art Sutton, who was the owner at the time the book was written (1994 I think). Even though I had never met Art before, I was impressed with his style of radio. That book further reinforced in my mind that the world of small market radio was where I should return. So I contacted Art about a job. I now manage Art's newest station in Northeast Georgia. I also had the privilege of meeting Bob on two different occassions and spoke with him on the phone several times. I really enjoyed getting to know him. I loved his old radio stories and was appreciative of his contributions in helping me and Art build that radio station from the ground up.

Thanks for everything Bob. . .the champion of small market radio.
