RIP: Frank Knight

Frank Knight (a/k/a Frank Knight-Lieber), who had been suffering from colon cancer, has passed away.

Frank was a longtime newsman on KCBS, as well as having worked at Gordon McLendon's pioneering news/talker XETRA/690 in Los Angeles (Tijuana). He served on the board of the Broadcast Legends and was a fount of information on radio history (and inside tales).

I'll remember him for his wonderful voice and incredible knowledge of old radio shows, actors and announcers.

I'll remember Frank for all those things...and, some GREAT bloopers at KCBS. There are some pretty good KCBS blooper collections out there with Frank all over them.

He really kept going even when KCBS stuck him on Overnights until the end of his career...

His "week in review" show that ran on weekends was a must-listen.

Lance Leber here, Franks son. Thanks for the post, and recognition for Dad was and what he did. The service will be held Saturday, November 3rd at United Church of christ. I think the address is 1914 Center in Alameda, California. If I am not correct, you can't miss the beautiful church on the corner. It is definatly on the 1900 block. All are free to attend. I was looking through his massive collection of audio for some of those bloopers and can't find any at this moment. Anyone have any handy? I know they are in there, but you can get lost in his collection. Anyway, thank you for the post.

I know I'm over a year late with this, but I just saw the topic and was very surprised and sad to find that Frank Leber had died. My condolences to Frank's family for their loss.

Back in the 1950s, my dad (Dan Cotterman) and Frank worked together in radio in the San Bernardino, California area. I think they met while both were attending a class at San Bernardino Valley College (or maybe it was Pasadena City College?). Anyway, they became close friends, and Frank spent quite a lot of time at our house. I remember him reading me bedtime stories in his beautiful voice, circa 1958 or '59, when I was four or five years old. He was quite a guy. Sadly, my dad became depressed and reclusive in his final years and failed to respond to Frank's continued friendship. After my dad died, I found a very sad letter from Frank in his desk. He was a good friend to the end, no matter what. I wish I could have talked to him again.

A year later from me as well.. Hey Cary, Yes i knew your Dad and Mom. We used to visit both of them at their desert home when i was much younger. I remember their dog "Rudy". I do know that my dad would not have gotten too far into the radio business if it weren't for Dan opening doors to him during the beginings of my fathers carreer. My father kind of knew what was going on and as time moved he was able to let go. Thank you so much for your reply, it was a treat for me to see such a nice message. I do know that your father was very gratious to mine when he started out. And..If there is a after life, they are hanging out listening to old radio shows.
