RIP Gnarly Charlie

Very heartbreaking news to report. His daughter posted this on Facebook today:

Dear family, friends, and acquaintances: It is with great sorrow and heartbreak that I announce the passing of my father, Alton Irwin. Today we lost an iconic legend in radio, but I lost more than that. I lost my father.

You are never really fully prepared for that moment when you get “the call,” but I am so thankful that he was able to go peacefully and without pain.

For those of you that knew him, he was always an upbeat guy that enjoyed life as best as he could. He had a love for all things music and baseball. He had a 46 year career in radio, casting his iconic voice all over the airwaves in New England, New York, and South Florida. He was known for his booming, charismatic tone and always made radio fun.

Whether you knew him as Cliff “Truckin’” Kenyan, Smokin’ Willie B. Goode, country DJ Mike Rivers, or your Certified 80s Freak Gnarly Charlie, his favorite role was always “dad.” He was always out to make people feel special and heard on the radio, but he’d always tell you how proud he was of his little girl.

I love you so much, dad. I’ll miss your texts and phone calls, but I’ll always have the memories we created. I hope you are able to keep the airwaves “smokin’” in the afterlife. I will miss you more than words can describe.

Thank you. Let me reiterate, his daughter posted this on Facebook today. I have no family relation to Gnarly other than knowing him as a DJ on several different stations and by talking with him on Facebook and back in the day when he was on Y. It’s so sad. He just got married and was so happy.

That's awful. I loved listening to him on Coast when he hosted their all 80s weekends back in the 2000s. Even when he was voice tracked at 3 AM his enthusiasm was infectious.

May my friend of 45 years rest in eternal peace. I met him in New Haven during his regime at 13WAVZ. He was a towering presence on air and in person. Smokin' Willie B..thanks for being a great friend. I will ways remember your voice and constant smile.

Not sure how many of you heard, but Gnarly died a few days ago. No cause has been released and I haven't seen an obituary yet, but Gnarly will surley be missed. I still to this day cannot find a DJ who could hit a post and knock an 80s song like the king of the 80s could. May he RIP.
