RIP Hugh Smith

I couldn't let Hugh Smith's passing going unnoticed. TV is where he made his mark, but his work in radio was first rate. he helped raise the bar of any show he was associated with, even if he was just doing a fill in.

Hugh and I were barely acquainted, but he was still pleasant and gracious to me when our paths crossed. Sad to say just covering the news and getting the story became passe in the modern world of TV news. It's our loss.

RIP, Hugh.

I grew up watching Hugh on Channel 13, and that was looong ago. I also remember how great he was doing news during Mason's morning show on the old Mix 96. Wow... sad news, indeed.

I remember the days of Hugh Smith, Roy Leep etc on Channel 13. I also remember the controversey which lead to Hugh's "retirement" from WTVT. That said, I remember when Hugh was prompted to work for 570 WHNZ. He was VERY GRACIOUS and humble, and had some great tales to tell-- "news was his life." His stay at 570 was very brief, I seem to remember his saying all of our compters etc was more than he could handle. Certainly, he was part of the "old guard" and was someone, who left his mark through a long TV and radio presence.

Hugh did some of my first radio newscasts way back in the day.
He adhered to the strictest journalistic standards. I remember him with his coffee cup and his cigarette's long, dripping, ashes, propped up against the wall next to the ap newswire.
Thank you, kind sir.
