The Godfather of Soul dead at age 73 on Christmas 2006. What a legend! I had the chance to bump into him at the Carnegie deli on 7th ave in NY 10 years ago. I was amazed how he captivated the ladies....and these were senior ladies.

I'm glad I'm in NY right now for the holidays, this radio market is one where he will get his deserved tribute. Kind of lame that Boston radio will just yawn.
 
James Brown most likely stop a race riot in Boston . James Brown had a concert At the Old Garden..on the day that Martin Luther King was killed . The Mayor of Boston wanted to cancel The James Brown Concert...But James Brown said the show must go on . During the concert..a few Fights boke out..And James Brown stop the music and calm the crowd Down .While Most major Cities had race Riots that day..Boston did not had any major problems on that day . If James Brown didnt Calm The concert crowd down..at the "Old Boston Garden"..These Concert folk.. may had spill out on to.. the streets of North station... and Trash up The North End..West End...Charlestown and All of downtown Boston. Its sad that Boston dont have a Urban A/C station.. that is not scared to tell this story over the air.
 
yeah... this is an interesting story... James Brown was scheduled to play the Garden the day AFTER MLK, jr's assassination in April 1968... and worked out a deal with a local TV station to broadcast the concert live on the air... Brown encouraged people to stay home and watch the show on TV, which kept the streets relatively empty, and no doubt prevented violent riots that broke out in other cities after MLK's death.

I talked about it on the air last night on Mix. Just because there's not an urban AC station in the market doesn't mean people won't be talking about James Brown. He was a major icon not only in the music biz, but in the Civil Rights Movement. We'll miss him.
 
Heard J.J. Wright, filling in for Dale on WODS, start the morning with "Living In America." And later in the morning paid tribute musically with "Make It Funky" and "Papas Got A Brand New Bag."

Alot of Jamn playlist songs are sample's of JB music . Only the Syndicated Show " The Back Spin " may mention James Brown on JAMN...And that is a SHAME .

really... if it wasn't for JB, JAMN wouldn't exist... something like that...
 
Wasn't James Brown one of the last R&B singers to let his material be sampled by the rappers?

I don't mean disrespect, but perhaps you don't know the significance of an Urban AC station because being in Boston, you've most likely never been exposed to one.

When something happens in the community, Urban AC stations stop the music to talk about it. The issue could be police brutality, 9-11, a legend like James brown passing or any community leader. The music has stopped on NY's Kiss-FM for all those events I mentioned.

I'm glad you could mention James Brown on your show. But did you take calls from audience members who were there? Did any of the local Black community leaders stop by your show? I doubt it. And frankly, with James Brown's passing, I want to hear from those people and hear their experiences and memories of Brown.

The impact of "Say It Loud I'm Black And I'm Proud" on black folks from the civil rights generation simply cannot be compared to a bunch of white middle aged suburban housewives who remember his most commercialized hits.

Never saw James Brown in concert, though friends of mine have. Did see James Brown speak with Lou Reed and a very young Madonna at the New Music Seminar in New York City when ROCKPOOL used to run them.
That was great. I remember what James Brown said "NEVER GIVE THE INDUSTRY ANY IDEAS. THEY WILL STEAL THEM." He was so right. Saw Morris Levy speak at the same event. Does this mean James Brown
can be on Roulette Records now that he's with Morris?

So - as for The Godfather's advice about record labels:

Another V. U.) - Jimmy "Gimme Shelter" Miller & i in Bill Levenson's office when he showed me the title and the planned album AFTER I mailed him the Moe E.P.! When I said "Bill, you know that's the title of my e.p. that I mailed you" he went blank. JAMES BROWN WAS RIGHT.

But that wasn't me GIVING the industry ideas as much as them TAKING THE IDEAS after they were pressed up!
 
Rapper? James Brown had some raps in his songs, but let's be clear now, his rap was not hip hop!
