RIP KBAI-930 Bellingham (1958-2024)

I think that's what he's referring to. Later became a KKOL simulcast, and went defunct. Wasn't the last callsign KIKN? 1290 khz?
KIKN was the last call sign. 1290 also had the KKNW calls prior to their longtime and present residency on 1150.

You could have shut down KOL instead of the other way around and exacted some revenge for all those years of employment at Harbor Island!!
I found my ten years on Harbor Island a very enjoyable, educational, and in the end profitable part of my radio career.

Towers are still standing, which of course is not surprising. I am sure NW WA is down the list a ways for a crew to come out and drop them. But there has clearly been some preliminary development work done, with some new big piles of dirt and some survey stakes placed. 'tis only a matter of time.

And I will say that the east tower is very close to some newly occupied new houses. Bet these folks will be happy to see these towers gone. Of course, the towers were there first, but you all know how THAT goes sometimes.

Could always hire that environmental whack-whack group that tried to drop KRKO's towers years ago.
Chances are they could USE some cash influx....

How stable is KAPS 660 in Mount Vernon? Contemporary Country is certainly not your typical AM format, would they just use their FM sister frequency 102.1?

For a rather unique tower design, they sound pretty good on AM. Their FM translator doesn’t get out super far, so I’m sure there are some listeners who tune into 660.

These 1KW stations have all outlived their usefulness.
There is an exception: low-dial-position 1 kw stations.

If below about 900 kHz, and in an area with decent conductivity, 1 kw can be a decent signal for a smaller market area. In fact, the figures say that... given identical tower wavelength height.. 1 kw on 550 will cover as much as 50 kw on 1500.

A one-kilowatt station will not have the same ability to overcome man-made noise as a higher power station, but if you are in most such markets it is all that is necessary.

On the other hand, 1 kw above 1200 "on your radio dial" is getting to be pretty useless as the coverage is small and increasing noise drowns them out.

KRPI Ferndale-Bellingham is off the air. What's going on with AM 1550?

Even the audio stream is down.
Well, we DID have some pretty wild weather this morning in the area; we lost our power for the first time this "power outage season." Maybe they had a power bump and it blew something? Time will tell.

Report from the field. As of last night, 1550 was on the air, but was having big audio issues. There is a regular loud "pop" and audio dropout every 5-7 seconds. Station is unlistenable.

Speaking of unlistenable, the KWLE translator seems to be MIA.

Up here, 1550 is a mix of San Francisco and "ferndale".. but usually San Francisco wins.
