RIP: KFRC's Mike Phillips

Jay Arnold sent along word last night that former 610/KFRC morning man and program director Mike Phillips died yesterday following a two and a half year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 64.

Mike was the original afternoon guy at KFRC when the station moved to Top 40 in February 1966, then switched to mornings later in the year. He ended his career as program director at L.A.'s legendary K-Earth 101.

He had moved from Santa Clarita in Southern California to Portland earlier this summer to be nearer to his family.

DJ

In the obit at laradio.com, it was mentioned that Mike Phillips also worked at KYUU and K-101 in the 80s. He is also credited with "inventing" the lite-rock format that became KOIT. He is also responsible for taking "K-Earth 101" in LA from #14 in the Arbitron ratings into the Top 5 - which he did by paring the station's playlist down to 300 songs (using Bill Drake as a consultant), and limiting DJ patter. Though there were similarities (jingles, basic format) between CBS Oldies sister stations KFRC and KRTH during the 90s and until recently, Phillips' K-Earth was run with a much tighter and restrictive format during that time. Regardless, testimonials from his jocks attest to how supportive and loyal a PD he was.

Mike P and my father were fairly close friends in the mid and late 60s...but, as often happens, they grew apart as Mike had some personal demons he had to fight. However, I understand he won the battle with those demons.

While Mike is remembered for KFRC and other things, he was a STAR in Seattle at the young age of 19 and had so much talent on the air and in programming....

Rest in Peace...

Too bad about Mike.

We were all deeply saddened when we heard Mike passed 1 year ago today. Hard to believe its been an entire year since we lost this genuine talent in the industry. We miss you!! :'(
