She was a grand woman of Film, Broadway, Opera, and Television. What a wonderful lady! She will be missed! She died very peacefullyTuesday night at her Manhatten apartment according to her son. She starred with the Marx Brothers in the film "A Night At The Opera." Television credits include To Tell The Truth, Whats My Line and many others.

RIP: Kitty Carlisle Hart passes at 96 years young.

Talk about a charmed and full life! I had no idea that Kitty was still alive until I read an article about her in the SF Chronicle last year after she stopped in San Francisco as part of a string of public appearances. I can't remember the purpose for her cross country tour, but she was still healthy and lively at 95. We should all be so blessed.

How right you are. These were great ladies who always showed great flair and class. A late friend of mine who worked at CBS during those great times found Arlene to be very personable and very pleasant. Much the same with Kitty as well. When TTTT switched over to color in 1967, Kitty Carlisle took note of that and really brought on the vivid colors of dress. This continued when TTTT went into syndication with the late Garry Moore, as well.

...of particular interest may be the fact that, when Dorothy Kilgallen died, her seat on the following Sunday night's "What's My Line?" was filled by Kitty Carlisle. The male guest panelist was Steve Allen, who had also been called upon to fill the seat left open when regular panelist Fred Allen died in 1956 (interestingly, the two Allens had both appeared on WML? two weeks earlier). There were also nights when Faye Emerson or Jayne Meadows, then regular panelists on "I've Got a Secret," would be absent and Carlisle would fill in for them, too...
...also notable is that, AFAIK, Kitty was the last surviving cast member of the classic Marx Brothers comedies of the '30s; she'd appeared in A Night at the Opera, and in fine singing voice, too...

I have a VHS tape I recorded on Game Show Network a couple years ago of "What's Going On?" possibly the most obscure panel show ever at Goodson-Todman. It only ran 5 weeks on ABC in November-December, 1954. Kitty Carlisle was a regular panelist.. The December 19, 1954 episode of course like many shows at that time of the year, highlighted the Christmas Holiday..Without going into the technical aspects of the game, etc. the last segment of the show had Kitty in a remote in Central Park with the New Haven Railroad Men's Glee Club. Up to this time, I knew her only as a Broadway and Movie Actress and an Patron of the Arts but I had no idea she could sing..She sang "O Come All Ye Faithful"..With the Glee Club and I was really impressed by her voice..She really seemed to enjoy being with the men doing the segment.Shows how comfortable she was with all types of people..I see GSN is only doing an hour tribute to her next Sunday Night/Monday Morning..She deserves much more than that..She was a beautiful, classy Lady and will be sorely missed..

According to the following obit, that statement is so very true as her death was announced by New York's Governor, Elliot Spitzer.

Her obit stated that the national tour was for her one-woman show about her life, and she was on that tour, though taking a break when she became ill and passed away.

I had the honor of meeting Ms. Carlisle while she was a member of the The New York (state) Council of Arts about 25 years ago. She visited a TV station I was working at and did an interview. She was what she appeared to be. Just a wonderful, classy lady. Just full of enthusiasm and fun. There were a lot of crabby old men working at the station and she charmed them all. You just wanted to hug her. I am so lucky I got to meet her if even for a couple seconds.

Kitty Carlisle was on The Today Show about four years ago promoting exercise workouts for seniors. At that point she was already well past 90 years old but could have passed for 70. Guess I should get off my butt...
