RIP - Mix 102.3 Beech Mountain/Boone

Outside of the AMs, does anyone really listen to these stations? Every time I am in Boone I just listen to something out of Charlotte. I imagine ASU students (those who turn on a radio anyway) would be listening to 95.1 or 96.1.

The closest thing is 97.3 in Wilkes. It's a (in my opinion anyway) lame satellite-delivered Hot AC with no attempt to even seem local. They don't even run local liners in the voids provided by the sat service. People in north Charlotte love it though - I believe Creative Loafing rated it best station for at least a couple years.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of classic hits 100.7 plays. They have strong competition from 101.5 WQUT who has a translator on Howard's Knob overlooking the whole town. No matter where you are in Boone it blasts right in.

In and out of spots yeah, but between songs only thing I've ever heard is the satellite part of the liners. They also have the option of a personality VO dropping in at the beginning of the talk breaks but never do.

The jock backsell liner closure was moved from the beginning of the jock talk to immediately before the commercial break on most of Dial Global's 24/7 formats some time ago. There is a satellite liner played between the jock talk and his/her liner to separate the two. This was done to minimize the effect of the liner not sounding like the jock exactly (having a slight cold for example) or having the wrong liners running, according to DG. And as far as being a local station, there ain't much in Wilkes to waste 100kW on, so it sounds like they are trying to be a regional station - listen to the weather forecasts and legal IDs.

Sorry if you have some involvement with the station, which it appears you may, but none of that is an excuse for sounding like a 3kw station on the verge of bankruptcy. I'm aware there isn't much to draw from up there but it would be nice if the station gave enough effort to at least use an actual name (as opposed to "this is 97.3 FM").

I'm surprised they don't run a little hotter, if not full fledged CHR. The only one that really comes in Wilkes County is 1057 Now from Winston. Kiss/Channel comes in some spots if you're lucky.

Wow...a college town with NO CHR or "modern" format for the 18-25 demo. I don't understand this at all.

I don't know their specific format, but maybe the college kids listen to the campus station:

I've also listened at various times the past two days to the "new" Classic Hits 100.7 and I can tell little (if any) difference from when it was "Oldies 100.7" just last week. And for those keeping count, this 100.7 has had numerous formats since it first signed on around 1990: Country, Contemporary Christian, Classic/Album Rock (Mack FM), Oldies, and the current Classic Hits. I think that's it.

It's like every other college radio station, but it does have more listenership than I've noticed on average. I assume lack of other stations to listen to is the reason.

It is served by Kiss 95.1 and Channel 96.1 from Charlotte. And perhaps B93.7 from Greenville-Spartanburg as well.

Greenville/Asheville signals are not audible in Boone. WNCW has a translator there because you can't hear 88.7 itself in the town. Boone sits in a valley.

95.1 and 96.1 come and go as you drive about the town. They really need a local CHR signal.

I live in the area. Boone is served by 95.1 and 96.1 as well as 107.5 out of the Triad. But, I would point out that a lot of students listen to their Ipods, streaming music online and things of that nature because they can hear what they want, when they want. And yes, WFBC can be received in Watauga, not so well in Boone proper but in places very well. There is actually a lot of choice on the dial in Boone.

It's not that local, but what about Electric 94.9 from the Tri-Cities?

I believe the issue with "Electric" is they are licensed to Greeneville, so their tower is rather removed - to the SW - from the Tri-Cities.

I believe all the Tri-Cities stations you can hear are on Holston Mtn. Even still with Boone sitting down a bit it's tough to get some stations. That's why WQUT has the translator up at the old fire tower site.

I assume as well that this is why Watauga, Avery, and Ashe counties are in the Charlotte DMA even though WCYB/WJHL are closer in proximity.

WJHL and WCYB come in like locals and it wasn't until WCNC upped their transmission capabilities that WXII was taken off the system. If you are in the Blowing Rock area, not only Charlotte but GSP stations come in very well since BR is facing south. My grandmother could easily watch GSP stations with rabbit ears on her old black and white set. Asheville is too far to the southwest with mountains in between for any significant reception in Watauga County.

Besides stations off the mountain, a lot of college students listen to WASU, 90.5.
