RIP Planet Radio Lafayette

Planet had their worst 12+ book in a long time where they scored below a 2.0 (1.9) and likely had something to do with the flip.

Also noticeable is sister KTDY took a nosedive and longtime bottom feeder KYBG has buoyed to #4 in 12+, which is also no surprise because KTDY has sounded stale for YEARS.

Something else to consider for KTDY this book is that they were operating from a 1kw Nautel transmitter since their BE rig went under water with the great flood. Until just recently their in building signal was terrible.

Dunno why they flipped other than to go after the audience that Walton and Johnson listeners are used to in Louisiana... Funny thing is both Mississippi affiliates are mainstream or Active rockers.... But rest of the w&j stations are Classic Rock and with they demos scewing upward now that they have gone conservative talk.. I could understand it, but don't agree with it. and now means absolutely no Louisiana based station playing Active Rock on I-10 between Lake Charles (Big Dog 106.1 Orange,Tx)and CPR off the gulf coast. There is one classic rock station per major market. a AAAin Lafayette (Radio Lafayette 106.3) and a Alternative (106.1 the underground)

Interesting that KYBG 102.1 is getting all the ratings these days. I guess appealing to the Boomer generation with a Classic Hits format is really getting them some attention. Last time I knew, 94.5 KSMB has been the most famous radio station in Lafayette; for about 3 decades. These days 102.1 KYBG seems to be the station that is overshadowing all the others. They are not even owned by a major radio industry and are locally from the Acadiana area. Impressive considering they have no other "leach" station other than Pure Country 106.7 (KSIG)

Anyway, as for Planet Radio - I think people are becoming tired of Alternative. Most people who listen to FM these days are Boomers. And some of the teenagers these days just want the old Rock N' Roll. It's become a trend. (notice the Pink Floyd shirts everywhere)

I debated this with a person in another thread; that stated that iHeartRadio was near bankruptcy.

Basically, I have noticed recently that, at least in Louisiana; the only stations getting attention besides Country and Hip Hop, are the Classic Hits and Classic Rock stations. The stations that broadcast Modern music and Pop are the ones that are sucking pretty bad. (CHR + AC i.e. KSMB and KTDY etc.)

It's bizarre when Classic Hits/Rock stations are getting more media attention than Top-40 stations. Just shows you that a downfall is coming. People of all generations are sick of the new music; and the FM radio ratings show this.

The classic oldies stations are getting more audience than the modern stuff. Only thing that keeps people listening to CHR is that one song by Ed Sheeran.

Maybe this is a sign that people are fed up with the American music industry and the bad "music" it's been producing for well over 20 years.

That's just your personal opinion on music.

I happen to believe that current pop music is in its best place ever, although the mid to late 60's and the earlier 80's were also my personal favorite eras for several genres.

But, like your, it's my personal opinion only.

Here are recent percentages of listening by format nationally.

Top 10 Radio Formats(Persons 6+)
Rank Format P6+ Share
1 News/Talk 8.90%
2 Pop Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) 8.20%
3 Country* 7.90%
4 Adult Contemporary (AC) 7.40%
5 Hot Adult Contemporary (AC) 6.70%
6 Classic Hits 5.30%
7 Classic Rock 5.20%
8 Urban Adult Contemporary (AC) 4.90%
9 Sports 4.70%
10 Urban Contemporary 3.50%

Note that the three contemporary formats, CHR, AC and Hot AC total almost a quarter of total listening.

Caveat... this data is about a year old, but these things only change minimally from year to year. There are, of course, many other formats such as Regional Mexican, Adult Hits (Jack and the like), oldies, alternative rock, active rock, Spanish Pop/AC, Spanish Rhytimic, Gospel, religious teaching, contemporary Christian, etc., etc.

It might be like that if you include California, which has the most people in the nation. If you exclude California, I'd bet you these market shares would change dramatically. I am right on the money with my analogy. California is different from the rest of the USA, for example.

Most people from California, at least since WW2, are immigrants to the region. Try finding a 5th generation Californian, that's pretty rare.

The data is compiled from every rated market in the US. CA has abnut 12% of the US population, so with or without it, the shares are the same. If anything, the shares for some English language formats are lower in CA as the state is now approaching 40% Hispanic, with over half of that population listening to Spanish language stations.

Ask the same about any sunbelt growth state, like GA, FL, TX, AZ, NV or CA. That's a squishy assertion that does not hold up.

A significan part of the growth, as mentioned, is among Hispanics. That group gives about half of its listening to Spanish language stations, so, if anything, it reduces the shares for English language formats. The same table, without CA would show those formats, perhaps, a couple of tenths of a percent higher in each case.

North Dakota is different from Misssissippi, too. I don't see the point.

Planet Radio hasn't been "Alternative" since the early 2000s. It was Active Rock from 2005 to 2011-ish, then it became a mix of Classic Rock, Hairband 80s, and Active Rock with a little bit of Seattle grunge sprinkled in. Planet Radio was just as far from Alternative as Big Dog 97.3.

You are right about FM and Boomers, that generation definitely owns the FM dial, but only because this segment has yet to embrace internet sources for music.

Teenagers, however, do not want "Old Rock N Roll." The younger generation simply isn't listening to terrestrial radio anymore. Spotify, Pandora, and more recently, Youtube, now own the ears of 15-34 year olds. iTunes is also big with this segment, as well as a whole host of internet outlets. Just about everything except terrestrial radio is being listened to by this segment, and this is why Classic Hits, Classic Rock, and even Classic Country is topping Top 40 stations, when in the past, this would be absolutely a non-truth. The Top 40 listeners are getting their music from other sources than terrestrial radio. The only musical genre that is really getting ratings in the area that is playing current hits is Country, and I have my own theory as to why.

Remember, the time you visited Wal-Mart and saw two kids sporting a Pink Floyd T-Shirt, that was simply a small sample in a big world of musical tastes.
