RIP R. D Summers

Info at 3WS website http://www.wwsw.com/pages/rdsummers.html
R. D. will always be remembered for his knowlege and love of the Pittsbugh oldies and Pittsburgh artists.
I last saw R D in December when we parked next to each other in the 3WS parking lot. Since he knew me through my son (or maybe it was because he thought I was old), I could never get him to call me by my first name. I was always Mr. Salamon to him.

That's terrible news for the entire Pittsburgh radio nation. :'( He will surely be missed. He was without a doubt, one of my favorite 3WS DJ's. I loved the Sunday Night Diner.

Does anybody know when the last time he was on the air? I wonder if 3WS will do some kind of tribute to him

Thought I heard him this past Friday night sitting in for Mike Fazier. I was out of town Sunday night....anyone know who did the dinner? Also I wonder who will be on Sunday night. sad news indeed.

There was no Diner on Sunday. They ran their regular music on automation. Once an hour, a recorded announcement said The Diner show would not be heard and that more information would be announced during the week. Merkle said on Monday they couldn't make an announcement Sunday evening because some members of RD's family still hadn't been reached and informed of his passing.

This Sunday's show will be a tribute to RD.

I believe R.D. filled in for Frazier who was on vacation all last week during afternoon drive.

They've been talking all week on 3WS about a tribute show planned from 7-10 p.m. this Sunday night. Supposedly, all the 3WS DJ's, Jim Merkel, Sheri Van Dyke, Mike Frazer, Joe Fenn, and Teresa Colaizzi are going to be in the studio taking calls and reminiscing about R.D. I just wonder now what will happen with the Sunday night Diner. Will 3WS continue to air it, as this is like the last link to the 3WS of old, as in real oldies, and if so, who would host it. Also, R.D. used many records/CD's from his personal collection for his show, which I doubt are downloaded on the 3WS computer. They are also going to miss him greatly when one of the regular jocks takes a day off, as R.D. was the fill-in guy for any vacation time at 3WS. I wonder if Clear Channel will hire someone for a part-time fill-in spot like R.D. had, or just add more automation. Either way, R.D. Summers will be hard to replace. He was a knowledgeable and personal guy, and was a pleasure to hear on the air. He will be greatly missed by the listerners.
