RIP, Red Muldoon

Red Muldoon lost his fight with cancer on Sunday. He was 52.

I hired Red (real name: Dave Omstead) at WMET in 1980 and he ended up outlasting all of us. Not only was he a fun co-worker, he was a cat person. He often served as our cat sitter, and took in several kittens and their Mom when we couldn't find homes for them....the ultimate act of friendship. I guess he used up most of his nine lives surviving ownership and format changes at 95.5. He moved on to WABT and WCKG, where he did Breakfast with the Beatles for a long time.

Here's info on funeral arrangements:

There will also be a party to celebrate his life, probably on Friday 5/15. Details to follow.

"There are places I remember, all my life, though some have changed. Some forever not for better, some have gone and some remain. All these places had their moments, with lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living. In my life, I've loved them all."

I only worked with Red for about a year (circa 1986-87) at the long-defunct WRXR-FM in Chicago. He was the overnight jock; I was the morning newsman. I remember Red as being smart, funny and very knowledgeable and passionate about music.

Fifty-two is just too young.

My sincerest condolences to David's family and friends.

It has been decided that the gathering on Friday will be small and private, just close friends and family. There will be a public celebration of Red's life at a later date.

52 is just way to soon.

I worked in sales at 95.5 for just over 3 years (WMET/RXR/NUA) and shared some really fun times with Red Muldoon (yes, with you too Steve.) As already witnessed, he was a friendly, charming character -- a real class act.

He even introduced this sales guy to his parents -- who helped me bring the Subway restaurant owners assn on to WRXR. And, NO, we were not known as "Railroad Cossing!"

He will indeed be missed. Rest in peace, Red Man, Rest in Peace.
