RIP, SUGAR BRUCE

There was some back-and-forth this morning about accuracy of reports out of Chelan/Manson that we lost Bruce Cannon last night.

Sad to say it IS true ... and 2010 will end with the loss of another great local legend.

Bruce was huge in the 1970's on KTAC, but also made many fans over the years on stations in Aberdeen, Spokane, Seattle, Bend, and Chelan. He was a great guy.

Bruce was one of those "bigger than life" personalities who knew how to command the space between songs. He recognized how to stand out with his unique personality, pacing, and humor. I always thought he was a little "Larry Lujack", combined with a little high energy "Andy Barber" or even "Danny Wright" thrown in, but really, Bruce was just Bruce. Not afraid to stop down and just chat, but also willing to push the energy level when needed. I knew he had been in ill health in recent years. But what a true radio lifer, and for good reason.

wow.....this truly is sad news. thanks for the post, otherwise i may not have heard :(

I used to go out of my way to listen to 85 KTAC when Bruce was on. Total energy, every day. No downs or ups..just a guy having a good time pushing the gas pedal all the way to the floor.. A great example of hot jock radio in its day..Ran one of the tightest boards I've ever heard...

I remember back in the '90s shortly after KMTT signed on he pulled a few weekend shifts there. i was kinda hoping he'd be permanent. But wasn't to be....

He'll always be "85 KTAC" to me.....

Re:SUGAR LOVE YOU!

Sugar was instrumental in my radio career from day one. When I first started at KALE in the Tri-Cities, I received a call from Bruce to have coffee. He befriended a young punk and taught me the ropes of personality radio. I will never forget his warmth, humor and friendship. We had just talked a couple months back and he was in great spirits. He told me he was going to continue doing weekends, so he could say he was on the air 50 years! In the early days of KTAC we roomed together. Our complex was loaded with airline stewardesses we'd dine in the front room with curtains pulled open. When we'd get female attention from across the balcony, Sugar would close the curtains by pulling the string with his toes. Then we'd jump change places and I'd open it with my foot. He tought that was just the best bit ever and we enjoyed female companionship on more than one occassion because of Sug's dining bit. I know when we meet again the table will be set with our favorite macroni and hot dogs, the Bachelor's Delight as he called it. RIP Sugar, much love, Crowski.

Thanks for Suggar Bruce story Gary. Same to LBB for letting us all know.

I loved to listen to Sugar Bruce and living in Seattle would put up with all the static of am 85 KTAC to hear him do his afternoon show. I enjoyed many a day driving up and down the I-5 corridor with Bruce cranked up on the radio.
The Bruce Cannon I got to know personally was a just as cool as he was on the air.
He was always willing to go over airchecks, and like Gary's experience, teach you the ins and outs of personality radio.
When I knew him he had cooled the single jets and was married to Sherri and I'm pretty sure they had two children together.
The personal time I had with Bruce will always be cherished. RIP Sugar!
