It's that time again kiddies. We're nearing another induction. Any opinions or guesses? There are always a couple of inductees from days gone by that most of us don't remember so I won't venture into that territory.
Will longevity rule and we see David Jones and Big John Bina inducted this year?
What about Ron St Pierre? Certainly he's been around long enough and has worn enough hats to warrant it.
Will this be Geoff Charles' year?
What about Robby Bridges? A good jock whose main claim to fame is having gotten into radio at the age of 10? Too soon or not really that well known outside the industry itself?
Any news people from way back that might qualify?
 
Just no interest I guess. Not like there has been in past years. It's just like there's a dying breed of broadcasters gathering to honor the ones that played a part in making the market what it used to be and not what it is. Other than Robby Bridges the ones you mentioned are good choices. As far as Robby he didn't stay in Providence and really didn't have an impact on much other than probably pulling good numbers on Cat Country. Good jock or not, they look for more than just good jocks as inductees and I don't think they're looking to induct newer blood.
 
Perhaps some of the nearly forgotten people who got radio in Rhode Island started might be considered this time. Certainly not a slate composed exclusively of those pioneers but perhaps one like Dave Stackhouse....

If anyone wanted to get off on a bit of a tangent and recognize some of the early news people, consider:

Izzy Siperstein, who was an actual radio journalist, writing for WJAR radio from about the time dirt was invented and continuing into a good part of the TV operation. Author of many colorful phrases, some of which were actually broadcast though some of his very best could not be.....gave new meaning to "biting wit".

Harry McKenna, similar at WEAN, and I believe originally a reporter with The Providence Journal-Bulletin.

Joe Postar who learned the craft from McKenna and was the first (and I think only) real news director at WLKW.

Joe Connell who came out of newspaper writing to write at 'LKW and taught me that the most important thing about writing quality news was the quality of the whiskey in the bottom left desk drawer. He favored Bushmills, as I recall, but I never advanced beyond Canadian Club.
 
Contrary to your belief - there is still plenty of interest in the RIRHOF! Our original list of nominees this year for the Class of 2010 was more than 50 names from the past and present, and the finalists are currently being voted on by our Board of Directors and Associate Members. We'll be announcing the new class in March or early April.

The date for the Induction Dinner and Ceremony has been set for Thursday, May 13th at the West Valley Inn in West Warwick. Tickets prices remain at $50 per person, and a table of 10 for $450, with ALL proceeds going to the local children of A Wish Come True. For kicks and giggles I should be nominated for Portraying Buzzy the Bee.All kidding on the side though. Rudy Cheeks,Lou Brutus for his afternoon drive work on WHJY and Station Night club contributions but MOST OF ALL Mike Gonzalves as "The Doctor".

Charles doesn't get the credit he deserves. It's to bad. He does some good radio and should be on a talk station. I really feel that he brought something special to the air when he first got to Providence in 1989 and started on WPRO. He was energized and did some awsome radio. But WPRO wasn't ready for him. They were to conservative. I think that is the reason Carolyn Fox's show didn't work out on WPRO either. WPRO wants people in there who talk politics. The station doesn't seem to go for hosts who just want to have fun. It's to bad. That would be some refreshing radio, instead of the non-stop bitch fest we get these days.
