Rita Wilde is Appointment Radio on The Sound!

Wow, been listening to Rita Wilde's new nighttime show on The Sound. The Sound, and Rita Wilde's new show, The Sound @ Night, has made me turn on the radio again. Been listening to Rita's show at 7pm and love the mix of Album Rock she plays. Tonight I heard tunes ranging from Magic Carpet Ride to The Weight, Dream On to Mrs. Robinson. Because of Wilde's show, I also just started listening to Julie Slater's show in the afternoon. Use to listen to KLOS, years back, then flipped to Jack for the last three years. But now, The Sound is my new go- to- rock station in LA. Congrats Rita!!

I generally like to give people the benefit of the doubt, and perhaps you deserve it, but since this is your first post and you come off sounding like a total PR flack, I am going to have to call BS on this post.

Too bad too, because there are some genuinely positive things to say about the Sound lately. Namely, they have expanded the playlist somewhat to include tracks not normally heard on the radio, or ones that have gone missing for some years. For example, I heard Eric Clapton's "Tulsa Time" this afternoon coming home from work and totally dug it. Of course, they followed it up with "Night Moves" by Bob Seger and the typical Sound playlist so the momentary listening party quickly came to an end. But overall, positive changes, albeit incremental ones, are going on over there.

Channel Flipper!!! I can assure you, I am not a PR flack, just an avid rock listener. I am in the broadcasting/digital world and I could less about which station is rating the best in LA. I do, however, as a fly on the wall, take note take note of what is going on and I see KLOS has had a stupefying fall to a 2.6 rating with The Sound, at a 2.1, basically in KLOS's cross hairs. I posted tonight because I think Rita is that good... which would be obvious to LA radio listeners since she was the PD of KLOS for some years. Thanks for giving me more credit than I deserve!!!!

You know Rita doesn't select the music she plays, right? The Program Director Dave Beasing schedules the tunes.

Also, there is no Santa Claus.

No, no one gets to pick their own songs at the Sound, not even Rita. As for adding new songs, why are they playing so much Pop? I like the Monkees, but don't expect to hear them nearly every day on a station like the Sound. Add to that Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom", and "96 tears" by Question Mark & the Mysterians (a marginal song for such a format) and a few more strange tunes for a Classic Rocker and you have all the makings of a station that's desperately trying to get some numbers... Kind of doubt that Bonneville will be happy with a 22nd or 23rd ranking in the LA PPM for that much longer...

KLOS on the hand bangs a little too hard these days, so they're off my radar since the guy that never smiles Scott Shannon started consulting. Then again KLOS actually has some numbers, so I guess more people like heavy metal than one would think. Their bright spot is still Jim Ladd who really does pick his own music...

So far you still haven't earned any. You still sound like a shill and if you knew the back story behind the ratings (and perhaps you do, thus the naked shilling), you would know KLOS has little to worry about. As David E. has pointed out, they only appear competitive when you look at the 6+ and 12+ PPM numbers. Once you break it down by the relevant salable demos and time periods, you find that the Sound is trailing KLOS badly. Mark and Brian are still solid in the mornings and provide a foundation for the station for the rest of the day that the Sound simply cannot penetrate. The age of the average listener to KLOS is much lower than the Sound, thus better ratings in the breakout demos. This is why you see much stability at KLOS and constant changes at the Sound.

As I and others have pointed out on this board, the Sound has recently been making changes both real and cosmetic that would imply that they are making last ditch efforts to save the format. Don't get me wrong I'm not here to bury the Sound, I would rather have it than not as it plays the music I grew up with and it would most likely be replaced with a different format that would not appeal to me at all, so I hope it succeeds; but right now that is not where the smart money has placed its bets.

Now you sound like the shill! Besides Mark and Brian, what else do they have?
Jim Ladd, legend yes, but a snooze! I will take Rita Wilde at night!

I have no dog in this hunt. I just call 'em like I see 'em.

I agree with Channel Flipper. If hearing "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Dream On" make you turn on the radio again, you should be listening to KLOS which plays those songs with such a frequent regularity that you can literally set a clock to them.

Funny! I was talking about programming. Hearing The Weight and Magic Carpet Ride within a half hour of each other, etc. Like I said, I have not listened to KLOS in at least two to three years and I agree with Uncle Rob about KLOS. You would probably hear Dream On, Led Zeppelin, Dream On, The Who, Dream On, Pink Floyd--- rinse and repeat. Jack has been my default station in my car for several years now, but recently, sampling Rita Wilde, I am impressed with her show and with Julie Slater in the afternoons. So far, ChannelFlipper has yet to answer my question: Besides Mark and Brian, what does KLOS have? ChannelFlipper has pointed out how good the demos are for KLOS, but forgot to mention how badly Jack is beating KLOS. ChannelFlipper-- prove you are not a shill and say what KLOS has besides Mark and Brian, who I am sure, are getting a bit long in the tooth at this point. And if they leave the building, KLOS, I would assume, could just go ahead and turn out the lights!

Dude, what is up with you? At this point you are harming Rita. I can guarantee she would not approve of what you trying to do on her behalf. She is a classy lady and doesn't need the help, if that's what this is intended to be.

I care only for good radio and the only station I shill for is KMPC-FM. I don't need to prove anything - I accused you of being some sort of a bad PR flack and you have done me the favor of proving me right.

As for the specifics, David E. and radioresearcher have daypart and breakout info as they are radio insiders. I am a radio outsider, so the info I have is the same as anyone else, only I care less than most. The Arbitron PPM 6+for May, June and July are as follows:

KCBS 3.0 - 3.1 - 3.0
KLOS 3.1 - 2.6 - 2.6
KSWD1.8 - 2.1 - 2.1

Others can correct me if I am wrong, but it looks to me like KSWD is the lowest rated commercial class B station on Wilson. Which means, pound for pound, KSWD is beating nobody.

Now do the honorable thing and give Rita her money and dignity back, PR flack.

Consider this fly swatted.

Now, I have to say Dude, what is up with YOU! You pick a fight with me because I praised Rita Wlide's new show on the Sound, and you attacked me for being a bad PR flack, which is pretty hysterical. And then, you proclaim your self the winner of the argument you started with me by saying Fly swatted! Did you hear me go SPLAT over Los Angeles. You say the demos fOR KLOS are so much younger than the Sound.. really. I was in my car tonight and I flipped to KLOS and heard Jim Ladd playing a Boy named Sue... I was like HUH? Then, he followed it with another country song I had never heard of. Double HUH.. I kept flipping back to the Sound which was playing one great David Bowie live performance after another.. flipped back to Jim Ladd to hear him say, a Boy named Sue( 1969) IS the "all time most requested song on his show." Given that, the demos for Jim Ladd's show must be 68 and above.
Still trying to put myself together after you swatted me. I am going to start a thread about how great the Sound's Live Concert weekend has been. If you listened to the Sound this weekend, I am sure you will agree!

I WISH I WAS IN L.A. TO HEAR 'BOY NAMED SUE' INSTEAD OF THE TIRED ROCK THAT MOST ROCK STATIONS HAVE BEEN PLAYING SINCE...THE FIRST BOSTON ALBUM.
