Rita Wilde To Handle Nights At 100.3 The Sound L.A.

Although there's been no official release, looks like former KLOS MD Rita Wilde is stepping in to handle nights at 100.3 The Sound. No word on whether she'll also take the Music Director reigns.

I may have jumped the gun a tad. As for right now, she's only handling weekends.

Why wouldn't one make the assumption - the station is without a night jock and a Music Director and all of a sudden a market veteran with both on-air and programming experience appears?

The key here is that you assumed she was full-time without seeing official word from KSWD. Remember what assumed means?

Fortunately I know people, and I hear that for the moment Rita is just filling in and that next week Sheri Donovan will be back for a week of fill-in.

Hopefully Dave Beasing will make a choice and settle the matter soon.

Let's see here, important duties for the music director at the Sound...

Its a PPM world we live in so need to decide if we should be play the Police three or four times a day... Remember to drop in "Canary in a Coal Mine" in place of "Spirits in the Material World" every now and then, to show we don't just play the hits.

We've burned literally every song off the 1976 Boston debut album, need to "change it up" and play cuts off the 1978 "Don't Look Back" Album. It will seem so much more fresh.

We quit pretending to play anything new or AAA a long time ago, so we can save a few $$ and put those Kings of Leon CDs up on E-bay. We don't need 'em anymore.

We are still committed to the whole 1970s vinyl albums (with matching lava lamps) scene, so we need to make sure that for each Cars (and all other artists) CDs, we have the matching album in LP. Also, remember to stock up on the record player needles - they break so easily and can be so hard to find. Even Radio Shack doesn't carry them anymore. But, man finding some of these albums in the record bins down at the Rhino Record Store reminds me of scoring the latest Zep album at Licorice Pizza back in the day. It was far out. Actually, since we brag about the snaps, crackles and pops of the vinyl on-air, we don't even need to get the albums new- used, not-too-scratched and warped is usually ok.

Just a quick review of the remaining 350 titles we'll be playing for the week before putting the computer on auto-pilot and we'll be done. Make sure to substitute "Roundabout" for "I've Seen all Good People" and we can call it a week.

Good Job!

Looks like I was right, calguy. Unless you'd like to check with the 'people you know', in case All Access is incorrect:

BONNEVILLE Classic Rocker KSWD (100.3 THE SOUND)/LOS ANGELES most recent weekender addition, RITA WILDE (NET NEWS, MAY 11th), has already been moved to weeknights 7p-midnight. Special features on her show, which starts TOMORROW, will include “LIVE AT 8” featuring live tracks from Rock’s greats concerts, “10 AT 10” a night version of LARRY MORGAN’s 10a show and “ALBUM SIDE AT 11.”

Whoa boy, can't wait to hear those live(!) Springsteen cuts at 8:00, a whole side of U2 at 11:00, and of course the obligatory Doors cuts when I flip to the competition after 10:00 pm.

Look, all jesting aside, I am glad for Rita who seems like a nice lady. I feel bad for people when they lose their jobs, there is really only one other workplace to go in the entire market who can use their skills, and that workplace doesn't call (or most likely, even accept yours). So after a few years on the beach, the other workplace across town did finally call and she got the gig. Good for her.

Yeah well I knew this several days ago, way before All Access had the result. The job was actually offered to another staffer, a weekend staffer who turned the job down. While I like Rita I will say that Beasing's first choice is one of the best sounding jocks on the air there and he/she (I won't say for anonymity sake) did not want the job. I know why too, but that's not something I will share for obvious reasons. With that choice made the door was opened for Rita, but the decision to give her the shift had not been made back on May 12th when all the assumptions were being made so you were right only by chance because back on May 12th it was just wishful thinking. At that point Rita was just one of many talents inside and outside of the station vying for the job. Congrats to Rita, it's nice for her.
The only real question is, will KSWD be the same format in a year? I have to wonder if the folks in SLC will keep accepting such low ratings...

So the natural takeaway, based on your post, is that Mimi Chen has too many other things on her plate and the weekend gig suits her just fine.

Sadly it was not Meems. She's great and on par with who was offered the job. Really, Mimi is so smart and so talented, but it wasn't her and by process of elimination one could keep asking, but I'm not going to say. Not fair to those who were trying to get the job.

Good for Rita, kudos to her!

Far as sampling Rita and Meems, I can only stomach The Sound's playlist in small batches with the exclusion of Mimi's Peace Love & Sunday morning excellent show.

@ChannelFlipper, as always, enjoyed immensely your take above!! Live Springsteen indeed! :)

Super, I was beginning to wonder if you were still on this board. Good to hear from you.

Oddly enough, generally the only time I listen to the Sound is in the shower where I have my trusty little shower radio. It doesn't get anything fancy like internet or sat (or even KCSN for that matter), so I am stuck with the big stick locals. Since I am not in the KIIS or Power demo any more, its basically a flip-fest between Jack, KLOS, and the Sound. But boy it sure picks up those Doors tunes late at night, and they definitely Light My Fire.

Now time to address that missing persons report for Glenn...

Hey ChannelFlipper, thanks for the mention :)
I check this board just about every day.... Haven't posted much lately, not that much to talk about re. boring SoCal OTA radio :p I am not an Urban format fan, so there's that. There's some obvious format holes which some posted about, so there's that. KCSN has a good format, and I guess we'll see how it improves or gets worse under Sky Daniels' direction, so there's that.
Glenn was last seen at the all-night InNOut flipping burgers, so there's that. [just kidding Glenn, the Italian Stallion]

If I have the radio on in the shower it's probably tuned to an Internet station (yes)

I'm so bad that if I gas my wife's car up at the local Arco, a five minute drive from home, I can't stand to listen to OTA SoCal radio on the way there, so I play a CD of what I burned from recording the Internet stream of AAA-formatted WXPK 107.1 The Peak ("in New York's Backyard"), my favorite station. I have a six CD changer in my car which plays the same CDs of The Peak, which I record on an ongoing basis. On rewritable CDs.

Below is a partial list of some of the tracks played by WXPK yesterday. I've omitted the classic rock Usual Suspects as well as those AAA tracks that are very familiar to most including those AAA songs which crossed over to Hot AC. It's OK to include some classic rock tracks and/or classic rock artists as long as that's not all there is!! No, the list below is comprised of tracks which may or may not be familiar to ChannelFlipper and others, most of which I assume David Eduardo would call stiffs and noise. You know, not everyone wants to watch on TV Dancing With the Stars, The Great Escape, Survivor, American Idol, The Office, Big Bang Theory, and CSI. Some of us actually like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Big Love, Hung, Weeds, and Jeopardy. The list below shows songs and artists which have long been neglected by SoCal "rock" stations. Many people are missing out on some great music, past and present.

[Obviously if you're into Lady GAG, Beyonce, JayZee, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Britney, et al, these songs may not thrill you ;) )

Also below is The Peak's 10@10 compared with The Sound's 10@10 from yesterday (unfortunately The Sound's most recent 10@10 from the same year 1967 was not available). The difference is striking. (ex. Hot Legs... yikes!!)

No doubt that the Sound's version of 10 @ 10 has been a definite disappointment and a wasted opportunity for them. I've only heard the NY station's 10 @ 10 a few times and thought it was good. I generally get my 10@10 fix from KFOG, even though it is no longer hosted by Dave Morey (and Don Pardo!)

Quite frankly, the 10@10 version from KFOG is a big part of what has made them a great (now) heritage station. What makes it different is what Super laid out in the song list above. Instead of doing what the Sound does and pulling 10 of the 300 songs in its regular playlist and spinning them back to back just because they were released in the same year, KFOG goes out of its way to pull songs that are not on its regular playlist and often times not even from the station's format (What would David E. say?) and spin them together for 40 minutes during critical daytime programming hours. But get this, due to the creativity and imagination put into the program, it is a ratings winner, which is why it is played twice a day during the week and all morning on Saturdays. Can you imagine, off the wall, not in format, and sometimes just plain silly songs out of the Dr. D. library or genre, actually increasing a station's ratings, stature, and image?

The Sound on the other hand, would celebrate a year like 1978 with:

Roxanne - Police
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Miss You - Rolling Stones
Old Time Rock & Roll - Bob Seger
Let the Good Times Roll - The Cars
Double Vision - Foreigner
Don't Look Back - Boston (of Course!)
Who Are You - The Who
Renegade - Styx
Fat Bottom Girls - Queen

'Nuff said.

I must say that 107.1 The Peak is a brilliant station and I wish that we had something similar here in SoCal!! I would be a religious, avid listener if we did! ;D I wasn't aware of KFOG's 10@10 so I'm definitely going to tune in to that. I'm very much like SRF. I rarely ever listen to OTA radio. Yuck! When I'm driving, I listen to AltNation on Sirius/XM constantly. I love their mix of new alternative music. Also, the Indie station on Sirius/XM is quite good!
