River playlist thus far

Kicking off into a "5,000-Song River Cruise":

ELO "Rock & Roll Is King"
Eagles "New Kid In Town"
Bon Jovi "Runaway"
Pink Floyd "Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2"
Adam Ant "Goody Two Shoes"
Beach Boys "Good Vibrations"
After The Fire "Der Komissar"
Bruce Hornsby "Valley Road"

So far, the format seems to be Classic Hits..... Or, "Rockin' Hits Of The 70's & 80's" (but mainly the 80's) (not that they're actually saying that ..it just sounds like a good potential slogan).

So I guess its safe to assume that they are jock-less/commercial-less at the moment?

I was wondering, are all the former WWDL dj's on the unemployment line now?

The format almost sounds like a variation of JACK, a classic hits JACK if you will. Their slogan seems to be the same "playing what we want." Not a bad idea as I've always said our area was weak in the 70's and 80's hits/oldies area.

I don't know for sure, but from what I understand they are not.

On a related note concerning the playlist, I was under the impression from what I've read here (and from what I've heard throughout the day) that the format was supposed to be 80's hits mixed with some late 70's. It seemed to be going well as I've heard songs ranging from "I Will Survive" to "Runaway" to "Piano Man." But around 4:30 I heard something completely off the wall = "Where Are You Going" by Dave Matthews Band. The song came out in 2002! Hopefully this was a mistake, but if not it means that they are mixing in new music that "sounds like" the format (which, IMO, is very very bad).

Did anybody else hear anything that didn't fit? Does anyone have any more information on the rotation?
Edited by NT3 on 09/27/05 03:02 AM.

I heard the same song on my way home. Seems out of place. However I have not heard anything else past 1990. Almost reminds me of the Buzz with a harder edge. Most songs are from the 70's and 80's.

Re: Is THE RIVER really legit?

I'm still not totally sold on it. One has to wonder if it is just another stunt along the lines of CHET RADIO, just a bit more realistic. Is the REAL format still to come?

Re: Is THE RIVER really legit?

I like the variety so far on the River. They seem to play anything from the 70's and 80's in the pop/rock/disco realm except really hard or soft rock. It seems they more or less try to stick with a format that other stations in the area do not cover well. They leave the harder rock to stations like Rock 107 and the Mountain and the softer stuff to EZ 103 and Magic 93. It's a great station for people like myself, who don't like oldies from the 60's and new stuff from the 90's and today. I've always liked the 70's and 80's, including classic rock, disco and 80's music.

My guess is that the River is the permanent format (at least as permanent as a radio station can be these days). However, like anything there probably will be tweaking over time, for better or for worse. Personally I like the music so far, although like anything there are individual songs I don't like. But nobody's perfect and I can live with Culture Club if they continue to play a good variety of music. In the end if you don't like variety from the 70's/80's then turn the station. The River is not for you.

I like some of the variety so far, but why are they playing so many stiffs??? Yesterday I listened while driving around town and I heard no less that four songs I've never heard before. In addition to that, I heard them play a couple others I recognized that weren't even hits. I understand they're going for the 5,000 song "Cruise" but there have to be other songes to choose from. I'd take going a little out of the planned boundaries instead of playing stiffs.

I was thinking that, but did not want to say it out loud. Playlist seems too slim/odd, and the liners just aren't good enough.
