RKO's Drug Rehab show

"WRKO AM 680, Boston’s talk station creates the country’s first East Coast major-market show based on substance abuse and recovery when “Recovery Road” debuts on Sunday, January 22.
The show will air every Sunday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., and will feature the poignant experiences of recovering alcoholic Peter Simon, the clinical knowledge of licensed abuse counselor
".
<font color=blue>Not to quibble with the release but does anybody else remember way, way back to the post-Vietnam era(I think 2 of the 3 pannel, were Nam vets)when there was a Sunday late-night into early-morn. show(11-2am?forget the name) on either RKO or HDH(850) that used to talk drugs with two or three cohosts? <font color=blue>

Hmmmm....thinking back to 1989-91 era, maybe? Paul Benzaquin hosted a "talk show"-styled infomercial/call-in show (real callers, IIRC), with two members of some place called the "Marino Center". Seemed to center on non-traditional treatments (chelation therapy, colon cleansing and the like).

Weekend afternoon no-man's land scheduling; may have been on WRKO and WHDH at different times in its run. I recall thinking this was a kind of sad end for one of my favorite old-school WEEI (590) Talkmasters.

Boy, that is a real insightful comment........not.

Is there anything positive you can say about WRKO?

I'm always amazed how many former addicts turn into counselors.

What is it replacing, another money show?

"Drug Hotline" (was Re: RKO's Drug Rehab show)

How some people forget. From early 1970's until the early 1980's ,"Drug Hotline" was a show with the same premise every Sunday night simulcasted on WRKO/680 and (the then) WROR-FM/98.5. It followed "Generation", hosted by China Altman (which ran since 1967). These two Public Affairs show won many coveted awards during their respective runs. Yes, Sunday nights (until 6:00 AM, Monday mornings) were all "public affairs" after 9:00 PM on WRKO and WROR. Nowadays, all public affairs shows are relegated to the 4:00 AM Sunday morning slots.

Recovery Radio is syndicated to about a dozen stations, including another "major market", LA.

Peter Simon ??? Carly's brother??? Re: RKO's Drug Rehab show

Is this Peter Simon the photographer, brother of Carly Simon,
and host of a reggae show on WCAS when they were in Central Sq (now WJIB)
...the reggae jock with a show at Jonathan Swifts nightclub?

Might be interesting if it is THE Peter Simon

It is THAT Peter Simon. More from the press release:

--------------------------------------------------------------

WRKO AM 680, Boston’s talk station creates the country’s first East Coast major-market show based on substance abuse and recovery when “Recovery Road” debuts on Sunday, January 22.

The show will air every Sunday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., and will feature the poignant experiences of recovering alcoholic Peter Simon, the clinical knowledge of licensed abuse counselor Woody Giessmann, and input from callers.

“Recovery Road” will highlight a wide range of topics, including drug and alcohol use and other addictions like cigarette smoking, and food and eating disorders. The show will feature experts in abuse and recovery, and also high-profile guests who have experienced abuse. The first show is expected to feature Judy Belushi Pisano, whose husband John Belushi died of a drug overdose.

Simon lives on Martha’s Vineyard, and is a well-known professional photographer. He has extensive radio experience, hosting music shows on the Vineyard and in the Boston area and Rhode Island. Peter Simon sought treatment for alcoholism in 2004 and continues his recovery.

“This show is going to be entertaining, helpful informative and funny. A lot of it will be sad, a lot will be urgent, but it won’t be dull. There’s just so much joy in knowing there so much life on the other side,” Simon said. “My sister Carly, who is very helpful in my recovery process, wrote the most amazing song on the subject I have ever heard, ‘Waiting at the Gate.’”

-------------------------------------------------------------

By the way, Peter did a weekly "free-form" music show called "My Private Collection" on WMVY 92.7 on Martha's Vineyard during the 1990's. The show reappeared last spring on Thursdays 7-9 PM here on WUMB 91.9, the Public Radio folk music station based at U. Mass Boston, which also has a repeater WFPB in Falmouth that serves the Vineyard. He pre-recorded the show in his home studio on the Vineyard and sent it up here to WUMB.

The show was removed from the WUMB schedule last month. I don't know whether Peter quit producing it, or if WUMB decided to cancel it.
