RMG done @ Clear Channel?

Someone had to go there... Any thoughts on these tweets from rover himself.

"@RoverRadio: Bad news. Just got call from Clear Channel. They won't let us back on air until contract is resolved. Hopefully soon. #AnyPartiesNextWeek?

And what about this wierd one which has since been removed from his Twitter page.

"@RoverRadio: Work on next chapter to begin soon. Been taking notes for years. Last in crosshairs went out after 10 months. Will beat that. U'll enjoy!"

Sounds like somethings up at Oak Tree.

It could be total posturing.

In fact, I'm 99.999997% sure it's just to keep his name in the headlines. Shane apparently guest-hosted WKYC-TV's "Good Company Today" on Friday as well.

But who knows? Rover knows he can't just leave and go back to CBS after burning that bridge with napalm (especially after his pointed attacks at Tom Herschel). The only available option for him at this point is to do the show from 94.1 The Zone in Rochester, his lone affiliate left.

As for WMMS, if it came to this... well, Alan Cox has had to replace both Howard Stern at Pittsburgh's WXDX-FM (after CC's group-wide Stern cancellation) and Mancow at Chicago's Q101. There is precedent there. So WMMS wouldn't be totally up the creek without a paddle. And I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't repeat the PR disaster when they Maxwell loose, which only put Alan in a bigger hole to dig out of.

And there's this followup tweet:

"P.S. Don't panic...I believe it will get done - but who knows."

Feels stunt-ish/posturing to me as well...haven't heard that he's running out of Oak Tree with his hair on fire or anything.

A good deal of morning shows were already taking last week off for the holiday break (and hadn't RMG done so in years past?). Of course, this is also an unrated period in the PPM system, which is why so many format flips take place in-between now and the first week of the year...

WMMS would be foolish to not let Rover leave. He's really boosted AM Drive big time and helped the station a lot. Otherwise, we'd still have Bob and Tom on AM and only "100.7" used on-air with no mention of the WMMS calls circa 2007. Don't know about Maxwell or Alan Cox would be in the picture, but maybe Loveline would still be on.

I remember seeing on the 'MMS site a picture of Maxwell in studio with pieces of blank white paper covering the Buzzard and WMMS calls on the station banner, leaving only "100.7 FM" uncovered. Don't forget when there was the orange "100.7" logo too.

WMMS in drive times has pretty strong ratings with mostly talk....why go music?

Especially since Cleveland is one of the most receptive markets to the hot talk format, local or otherwise. Look at Stern's success here, or O&A going to #1 in afternoons (on a not-fantastic signal) within one or two ratings periods back in 2001.

"Hot talk" has done very, very well for WMMS. Remember, when they kicked Maxwell to the curb...er..didn't renew his deal...they went out and got Alan Cox, which turned out to be a very good move for them.

I'm sick of the public rumblings about contracts. Either sign the thing and stay, or don't sign and leave. I'm half tempted not to come out of hiatus until this gets resolved one way or the other...all the hand wringing over "is Rover gone??? is he coming back?? Could we lose him?" gives me a freaking headache.

Well, Rover and his crew are staying put. He announced on his show that he's now on contract until 2017.

He kicked off the discussion by mentioning how CBS was talking to him, how 92.3's format is tanking, Maxwell no longer on-air, CC taking him off due to the CBS talks, yada yada yada.

So Rover stays at WMMS (like he was really going to leave the station and CC was really going to let him leave), Alan Cox remains on afternoons "and they all live happily ever after. The end." ;D

I find it amusing that "CBS was talking to him" after he personally has ripped OM Tom Herschel mercifully for years. Yeeeeeeeeeeeah. ;D

Rover had NOWHERE else to go if he left CC. Unless he really wanted to do the show for 94.1 The Zone in Rochester, his lone affiliate left.

Move along... nothing to see here...

Hopefully they won't put him on X1067 in Columbus. That station is trying to get their listeners back from when he was there last time when they were Radio 1067 and ended up switching to a GenX format. Now they reverted back to modern rock.

I don't think you need to worry. The CC Columbus cluster isn't THAT dumb to try that over again (I know to some, that's not saying much).

Rover only has The Zone and WMMS as affiliates. And The Zone is usually a non-factor in the Rochester morning ratings scene, as Rover is no match for popular local host Brother Wease.

Nationally, he's lumped in with David Lee Roth, O&A and Adam Carolla as failures of CBS' Free FM programming strategy. And as a failure in syndication in his own right.

Kudos to OMW for ignoring the whole Rover contract "drama." The show isn't exciting anymore as it's seen better days. It was really for only a week or two as well.

I wouldn't be surprising if Rover was upset with all the attention WDOK was getting for "The New 102." How do you think he was trashing CBS on his show Monday. He was probably hoping for WOIO and The Plain Dealer to cover the contract talks, and get his name in the press...again. I still remember WOIO covering the "Where's Duji" saga.

Sad to say, Rover is just another rock station morning show that is trying to be like Howard Stern. The only good people on the show are Rover, Duji and Rob (the producer). Everyone else stinks with Charlie, Dumb and Jeffrey as the worst.
