RMS RETURNING IN THE FALL?

Saw this on Pegasus News...

The Russ Martin Show will be syndicated in the central US markets and some states in the southeast. Maybe on-air by this Fall. ???

THIS is your source? A totally unfounded quote from the message board on Pegasus News?

Are you kidding me? How desperate are you to have the RMS back when you grasp at straws like that?
I'm sure that guy has an inside track.

Where would they put Russ if he comes back? I don't think nobody wants him here.

What's he gonna do? Play the guitar for 4 hours? Talk about lifting weights? Not-so-subtlety bait his sidekicks into telling him how strong, lean, built, chiseled, handsome, smart, innovative, or entertaining he is? Looks like JD, Trey, and Omalley need to dust off the old knee pads. How is he going to get syndicated to a market where nobody has ever heard his name? They only thing he has going for him in the dub is that he has an audience. What's going to happen when a potential listener turns on his show for the first time and they are treated with 4 hours of him talking about opening a bar or how awesome his band sounds, with spineless sidekicks just sitting around saying "Yup-you're right!!!" to everything he says? I don't see that attracting a new audience.

The advertisers sure won't buy into it. His only shot "might" be Internet radio, but that'll probably be an out-of-pocket expense since he'll have little luck in finding sponsors.

PPM data shows RMS didn't work, period. Cult listenership, not enough numbers. RMS could be great if his ego would allow him to carve out 40% of the garb, and ease up on the inside schtick. It takes a week of listenership to catch up to the RMS mojo, and new listeners don't have the study time to learn his world, cast of characters, psudo dead air, inside jokes, et al

And the "Regular Guys" were a household name, here?
No, but if Cumulus had them on in Atlanta, they had a home station.

1. Russ doesn't even have that right now. So let's say they are trying to syndicate him- they have NO (as in zero, none) PPM track record to sell him on (IIRC, PPM didn't go active until November, and Russ was blown out in Early December, so he has ONE month in the PPM world to use). i could swear (although I could be completely wrong) that Russ's actual audience is rather small, but freakishly devoted. Stations that may want more cume and less TSL, make Russ a bad fit. We don't know how PPM might treat the RMS.

2. Russ's ratings had been falling. I linked to a post from November that said he had dropped to 6th M25-54. Why would a station that needs help go after a show that hadn't even been dominating their own daypart in their home market?

3. With no home station, no studio, no tech center to send out syndication signal, etc. Can be created (a la Kidd Kraddick) just more time and expense...borne by who?

4. The Regular guys have cumulus shoving them down DFW's throat. Russ doesn't yet have the same. Until he gets picked up, any syndication will have to come through Russ et al convincing some guy in (insert minor market) that he should stop paying his guys and use Russ. Sales people/"affiliation relations" also cost money. Is Russ going to hire some guy to call on stations in Abilene, Waco, etc to put him on? Then how does the RMS make money from being on in Abilene? If you're in a smaller market, and owned by and chain of broadcasters, don't you think they're more likely to syndicate their OWN talent, rather than using Russ? CC, Cumuls, Citadel, Emmis, etc all have their own jocks they can syndicate. Until Russ gets back on somewhere, why should I, Waco station owner put him on? What do I get from Russ (programming) that I couldn't get from ABC radio networks, premiere, Westwood, etc...

Look, I'm not a Russ 'hater'. I've got a lot of respect for the guy, and realize what he's done in this market. I just don't think it's a 'no brainer' that some station is going to put him back on. And that if he does get back on, that he's suddenly going to bounce back not just to where he was (6th m25-54) but back to #1...

And yes, CBS COULD put him back on, but do you really want to have a non-sports AM drive show AND a non-sports PM drive show on your so called sports station? It justs boggles the mind....

Indeed... And what happens "if" CBS were to restore RM to PM drive, but then turns right around and pre-empts him for afternoon Ranger games? Is RM just gonna sit on his butt by swallowing that, or is he going to rant and rave everytime he gets pre-empted? Given his ego, I suspect the latter.

I don't hate the guy either. He had a great run with KEGL going all the way back to when it was a music station. Personally I liked him better as a music jock. But that was what, almost 30 years ago? Let's not forget other veteran talent from that era, has also been phased out in recent years. Times change, and Russ would be better off retiring from radio. I think if he is smart, he could refocus himself to being a community outreach kind of guy, during his two years of probation. But that's just my opinion.

That's a good point. Maybe if he branched out from Police & Fire and the animal shelters for a short period, he might be able to sway some of the negative thoughts, but at the same time, with those 2 causes, he's doing/did a bit more than a lot of other air talents.

Anyhow, I don't see anyway CBS will be able to bring him back...There's just no where for him in Dallas radio that would fit...Right now. Who knows, maybe radio isn't the answer. He had a hit with hot ticket. Maybe do a weekly show on CBS owned channel 21? JD would love to be back on TV...Russ would be back in the limelight...

From the look of his website the last few weeks, he's become quite affectionate for the camera.
