RMU Radio

Starting late next month, early February, Robert Morris University will unveil a new online radio station. The station now is under construction in the Academic Media Center located in Nicholson Center. The website will be up and running soon at www.rmuradio.com. The format of the station is going to be very diverse and the following shows are in the works: talk shows, request hours, radio drama performances, church sermons, sports broadcasts, music shows or live concerts. It will be run by the students of RMU.

Did they ever have an actual over-the-air station, or at least a construction permit
for one? I once met an engineer who claimed to have done some work for them.

From what I have heard, I don't think so....I have heard that Robert Morris is too close to the airport to put a tower up.

many many.....AND I MEAN many many years ago a station was considered...as i was involved......

we couldn't even get enough support for a carrier current operation......

GOOD LUCK WITH THIS PROJECT..........gotta love the 'net...

From someone who ran an FCC noncom in college, good luck! The nice thing about the net is, you don't have to worry about someone literally "F'ing" up. I would still make them follow FCC rules simply so that those who graduate don't think they can just go do anything at a radio station. But, that's not my battle! haha!
I hope they have fun with it.

There was a lot of talk about getting a tower on the downtown campus in the future but having the controls at the Moon Campus. It was also brought up about getting a frequency that was only powerful enough to be used on campus.

The man that runs the media center currently is a bit two faced and a lot of talented students that worked with the television studio were not re-hired once he came on board. The ones that are still there are getting fed up with the way he operates so it will be interesting to see how the Radio station works out.

His vision for the radio station is to be mainly feature shows. Since you have to be near a computer with an internet connection and care enough to connect to the station, it might not be a good move to have programming on the native music of a central African tribe. College students just don't care.

Well it's official, the ribbon cutting and debut of RMU Radio will be February 4th. Look for the website going live within the next week or two for the schedule of shows.

Hopefully, this could get me a weekend job at B94 or Kiss haha.

Take it from someone that's been there, set your eyes on an internship with them first. College radio on-air experience doesn't make everyone weekend jock material right away. Get in and show them you're dedicated. Give them a reason to think you deserve it. By the way, B94 doesn't even have mid-days yet, let alone weekenders. Good luck dude!

Being on-air at a college in Pittsburgh does not guarantee that you will ever get a paid on-air gig in Pittsburgh. The most you can hope for is a promotions intern or paid promotions gig at a station. There are exceptions, but they are very few and far between.

This is why the demise of small-market stations has hurt the talent pool. Starting my senior year in college, I did weekends at WKEG for 5 years before I broke through to WEEP, and eventually Y97 and LTJ....

Student radio stations are no different from any other lab on campus. Just because you get time in the Chem lab doesn't mean you are guaranteed a successful career. It also doesn't mean you can't win the Nobel Prize. It just means you have a chance. What you do with the chance is entirely up to you. Work hard, ask questions, be open to critizism even when it feels like its going to rip your soul out. Find every Internship you can and just be relentless once you are there.

Smile and thank people. Remember names, stay in touch with people trying to give you a hand. This business runs on people who know people who know people.

I heard Bubba and Buckhead both got their start from washing the stations cars...maybe you should try that.

How about you listen to my show before you crush my dreams haha. We are on Live Mon-Thurs 9p-11p. Thursday we have a live mix show so its not our real show. I can tell you right now we aren't the best DJ's, but we aren't the worst...
