road trip - radio report

I took a trip back "home" to North Carolina today and came across a couple of interesting dance-radio related tidbits during the course of the drive.

Most of the area I covered is radio wasteland so to speak, so using a friend's borrowed Sirius radio receiver, I was able to listen to The Beat 36 for a good 4 straight hours or so (I also left it on so as to monitor the playlist while listening to CD's, etc). They do a good job as usual - dance hits as properly defined. Sounds like they're playing all but 4 or 5 tracks from the latest Promo Only Dance Radio issue. I caught the 9:00am mix (Eastern time) - not bad but nothing special either. I'm a little partial to one friend who mixes for Sirius, so I'll throw that confession out there. There was one glitch in the morning where they played "Love On My Mind" by the Freemasons twice in about two hours... not sure if this was by accident or done purposely. I didn't notice if it came up again a couple of hours later.

The former "Q96.9" dance station in Toledo is now seems to be Christian Contemporary hits after flirting with a couple of other formats. No big surprise there, given the ownership.

I got to Raleigh and caught about 20 minutes of a dance radio pirate that's been on the air here sine sometime last summer. It's automated, but the music is current and the audio processing is terrific. Whoever is running this thing knows what the heck they're doing. I heard Amber "Just Like That", a remix of Donna Summer's "I Got Your Love" and the Norty Cotto radio edit of "Pon De Reply" by Rihanna. No DJ's that I heard, no calls, just a positioner that says "The Dance Station" with several drops done by Sean Caldwell. LOL Someone's certainly got some time into that thing.

Wow, well that certainly explains the "programming" portion of it... at least I know now that I don't have to drive clear to Raleigh to listen to it! lol

What kind of range did this pirate have? Was it a Part 15 perhaps? The incredibly high quality 128k WMA stream, is probably why the sound quality, and proccessing sounded so good. WES KEENE should be flattered, this may even pick up a few additional listeners to his web stream.

Definitely wayyyyy more than a Part 15... I'd say it's at least equal to that of an LP-FM or more, but I don't think it's a legal LP-FM station. The signal supposedly originates in a town east of Raleigh called Knightdale, and I was in Clayton (with the car stereo, mind you) which is a good 10-15 miles south of there or more. He's not covering all of Raleigh, but he's reaching a lot of eastern Wake county pretty well.
