Road Trip Report from Idaho

Hi everyone! Reporting tonight from the Best Western Inn at Hell's Canyon in Clarkston, WA (across the border from Lewiston ID). Lots to cover, but first the AM DX tonight...

KOZE-950 // 95.5 is 2.3 mi from me, KCLK-1430 // 107.3 is 7mi. KRLC-1350 is 3.9 mi, // 93.1 K226CT.

Geomagnetic burp tonight?

Standards on 1280 ended up being KQLL Henderson NV with mention of 102.3, supposedly day power 5KW at 723 mi. Then a baseball game mixing, maybe Angels are still on late? (KZNS)
1270 is KBZZ Reno (rock) mixed with Twin Falls
620 is KIGS Hanford CA w/ Punjabi, but its very weak.
750 KOAL with Coast to Coast...where's Portland? Gone!
710 KIRO and 1000 KNWN (ex-KOMO) very, very weak - cancellation zone or auroral cx?
1210 KHAT Laramie good with country music, 'God's Country' Blake Shelton // stream
1010 unid SSer (probably KIQI San Francisco) over normally strong CBR.
980 CKNW BC seems fine...good signal with Global News, talk program
1600 KGST Fresno matching stream with classic Regional Mexican music, KVRI buried under
1380 KTKZ and KRKO about equal
1390 good signal from KLTX Long Beach CA, Spanish Religious mx.
Nearby Moscow 1400 (KRPL) easily on top / same with KCLX 1450 in Colfax.

Earlier I drove through Hwy 26 to Othello, 395 down to Pasco, then 260 to Kahlotus and 261 to Palouse Falls (What a magnificent place!), back to 26 to Colfax and around 272 to Palouse, the US-95 jct near Potlatch and down to Moscow/Genesee ID. Interesting FM synopsis'es, of course.

Several Spokane stations were quite strong around Royal City. 92.9 KZZU, 93.7 KDRK, 94.5 KHTQ mixed with KATS, several others.
Around Connell on 395, a weak 93.7 the Mountain Spokane (KDRK) faded to KQFM Hermiston OR. The entire Tri-Cities dial was in, each and every LPFM (and Spanish station!) all the way into the metro area. They get out way too well. I heard *8 watt* KDIL-LP 105.7 (Spanish Rel.) on the hill above Kahlotus, over 40 mi away. 101.9 Hank FM is one of the last good things about the Tri-Cities dial - they sure do play the LEGENDS of country. No Walker Hayes, Florida Georgia Line, or Morgan Wallen on Hank, ever.
Going up a hill near Kahlotus on Hwy 260 and seeing the last wisps of the Colockum Ridge, some 60 mi away, imagine the surprise as I hear the jingle for KXLE 95.3, weak but clear. I think I was 85 miles from their xmitter. That's the farthest east I've heard them. KPND quickly swallowed them up.
Most high-power Spokane FMs were in near Palouse Falls, but faded as I dropped to the parking area. Some strange station on 90.3 that I thought was CSN Moses Lake, ended up being KRFP Moscow ID running Pacifica Radio and a *very* eclectic music format. 1100 watts. I didn't get KZUU 90.7 (WSU station) until I got 10 miles before Colfax, and KUOI 89.3 (University of Idaho) went out a little farther, maybe 15-20 mi before Colfax in the LaCrosse area.
Tri-Cities stations just won't fade. Even into Idaho, there was KFAE 89.1 with NWPB. And 102.7, 94.9, a few others. Kyle (DX_Sphere) heard them all the way to Lolo Pass in Montana. I believe they can make it into other parts of far west MT. Maybe on a couple of high mountains to the east of Lolo Pass...someday.

Here's a sample FM scan along US-95 between Potlatch and the Lewiston hill overlook...not every station showed up at the same time, but you get the point. A little bit of the scans in central/eastern WA through the Palouse as well.
88.1 - KYRS Medical Lake / KUCC Clarkston
88.3 - KWIS Plummer
88.5 - KRLF Pullman
88.7 - KAGU Spokane / KIYE Kamiah
88.9 - KLCZ Lewiston / maybe 1 other
89.1 - KFAE Richland
89.3 - KUOI Moscow / KJCF Asotin
89.5 - KEWU-FM Cheney
89.7 - KWWS Walla Walla, then KAUC West Clarkston (They are not Christian Contemporary. They have a BBN-type fundamental Christian format, lots of hymns and old-school preaching)
89.9 - KPLW Wenatchee came in for a long time. They made another appearance around Washtucna or so. Then, KJEM Pullman
90.1 - KOLU Pasco, later KNWO Cottonwood ID
90.3 - KRFP Moscow
90.5 - KNWC Clarkston...and KQBC Benton City's 200 watts went out forever. I was well east of Washtucna before they faded.
90.7 - Early on it was KNWR Ellensburg, then it faded to KZUU Pullman 10 mi out of Colfax
90.9 - KKRH Grangeville
91.1 - KPBX-FM Spokane
91.3 - KGTS Walla Walla before it got swallowed up by IBOC
91.5 - KLWS Moses Lake then fading to...IBOC
91.7 - KRFA Moscow
91.9 - what I THINK was KSFC Spokane, but IBOC was all over it
92.1 - KUMA-FM Pilot Rock OR in and out, even 15 mi from Colfax they were in. Then gone, replaced by (I think) KXJO St. Maries ID and now K221FW Lewiston (Hank FM, KZBG-HD3) I was thinking KWVR Enterprise OR at first!
92.3 - Kept hearing weak country music along Hwy 95. Probably KIZN Boise (200 mi or so)
92.5 - KZHR Dayton / K223AN Coeur D'Alene (KVNI) on the big hill near Moscow ID
92.7 - KORT Grangeville
92.9 - K225CJ Walla Walla fading to KZZU Spokane entirely around Dusty/LaCrosse WA
93.1 - K226CT Lewiston (KRLC) but not until I reached Idaho, and definitely not until S of Moscow
93.3 - KRKL Walla Walla, fading to K227BW Pullman (KRFA Moscow) until dropping the Lewiston hill
93.5 - KWDR Royal City went out a ways for 210 watts. Probably until after Palouse Falls on high points. Long after, K228DU Clarkston (KJCF-FM)
93.7 - KDRK Spokane after KQFM faded away
93.9 - KTAC Ephrata made it nearly to Moscow ID...and then some! Incredible range
94.1 - KCLK Clarkston
94.3 - (Nothing after KSAE-LP Kennewick faded)
94.5 - KHTQ Hayden and K233CJ Walla Walla equally until well into the Palouse, then Rock 94 1/2 was strong
94.7 -
94.9 - KIOK Richland noted near Moscow ID (farthest away) then replaced by KPLL-LP dropping the hill, the Positive Life station here in town
95.1 -
95.3 - KPND Deer Park after that little wisp of KXLE (K237CO Moscow is off, it's now on 96.9 FM)
95.5 - K238CH Ephrata out to Washtucna or so, great range / K238CI Lewiston (KOZE-AM) way after
95.7 - KKSR Walla Walla
95.9 -
96.1 - KFOO Opportunity
96.3 - nothing after KRCW faded
96.5 - KOZE Lewiston, but K243CK Pendleton was clearly heard above Palouse Falls...the Blue Mountains were in full view on this gorgeous day.
96.7 -
96.9 - KEZE Spokane then mixed with K237CO Moscow (gotta be different calls now, K245XX) - Positive Life Radio
97.1 - KXRX Walla Walla
97.3 - KKRS Davenport, but K247AW Lewiston is the local here with B97.3 Top 40.
97.5 - nothing after KOLW faded out
97.7 - KZBG Lapwai
97.9 - KZTB Milton-Freewater, but not after KZBG took over and the HD hash slaughtered 97.9
98.1 - KISC Spokane
98.3 - KEYW Pasco made it to the Palouse, not much farther
98.5 - KZID Culdesac...surprised how KEYG did NOT show up today on most of the drive east of Othello. Gone as soon as the flatland stopped.
98.7 - nothing after the KFLD/KUJ translators faded, no sign of La Grande
98.9 - KKZX Spokane
99.1 - after KUJ faded out, just K256BY Lewiston (KZBG-HD4, Classic Rock)
99.3 - K257FX Spokane (KCDA-HD2, Kix 99.3, this used to be on 1280 AM)
99.5 - KZZL Pullman
99.7 - K259CR Milton-Freewater OR well past Washtucna, probably to Dusty or LaCrosse, then gone.
99.9 - only KXLY Spokane. K260AN Clarkston (KEFX) is off the air.
Another post coming

100.1 -
100.3 -
100.5 - KQZB Troy, running a 1960s-90s classic hits format, seems automated, no webstream and hardly any web presence. KWIQ Moses Lake hardly there in areas where they should have been. Low(er) power?
100.7 - KHSS Athena OR - good almost into Idaho
100.9 - nothing after KARY faded out east of Hatton Coulee. Except for K265AP Lewiston, but not heard until Genesee or so
101.1 - KEYF Cheney
101.3 -
101.5 - KATW Lewiston

103.1 - KCDA Coeur D'Alene
103.3 - mostly a very weak KLER-FM Orofino after KWLN faded, but KWLN did fade back up north of Moscow ID, about 110 mi. But I wonder who the rocker on this channel was in the Palouse? Maybe KDTR Florence MT (near Missoula)?

106.3 -
106.5 - KEGX Richland
106.7 -
106.9 - K295AV Kennewick (Spanish music) went on well east of Washtucna, probably one of the last Kennewick translators to fade. Then it was all KMOK Lewiston
107.1 -
107.3 - KFFM Yakima near Moscow ID (over 160 mi), very weak but IDed!
107.5 - KOUG-LP Pullman, 5 mi from Colfax they finally made it in...a weak signal
107.7 - KWVN Pendleton (mostly on the WA side, not heard in ID)
107.9 - KMBI Spokane

More to come tomorrow from another hotel in Sandpoint.

Day 2 nearly coming to a close, here at the Hotel Ruby in Ponderay ID (just north of Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille). Notable format flip on 106.7 KTPO Kootenai - everything says it's a KPND simulcast. Even credible (non-Wikipedia) sources. It has flipped to Idaho's Greatest Hits, 106.7 Max FM. Not sure when the move happened, but now KPND is only available on the regular 95.3 frequency, which can be multipathed at times because of mountains.

Route today went from Lewiston east to Kendrick and Juliaetta on Hwy 3, east out of Deary to Bovill, and around curvy forest and logging land back around to Saint Maries on both ID Hwy 3 and ID Hwy 5. Then back to 95 at Plummer, N to Worley, Coeur D'Alene, Post Falls, and then straight north from there to Sandpoint, where I am sleeping tonight.

Sample FM scan along the way today...
88.1 - KUCC faded by Kendrick or Juliaetta, then it was mostly KYRS
88.3 - KWIS dominant until way past Hayden, weak near Silverwood Theme Park at Athol
88.5 - A weak K203ER Clarkston (KEFX) faded quickly to KRLF, and KRFY Ponderay didn't show up until way past Silverwood
88.7 - Mostly KAGU on today's trip
88.9 - KLCZ Lewiston at first, and faded quickly leaving this frequency blank.
89.1 - No sign of Richland anywhere on this trip, but K206CQ Spokane (WAY-FM) was noted by the hill near St. Maries and further N, of course
89.3 - KJCF Asotin faded to a multipathed KUOI Moscow near Juliaetta, got better up the high grade to 3000', then faded
89.5 - KEWU decent after the junction 15 mi S of St. Maries
89.7 - Just KAUC before the hills took it down to nothing
89.9 - KJEM good at Juliaetta, nearly 5 bars at the top of the grade. Later, KYMS Rathdrum with Country Christian music!
90.1 - KNWO Cottonwood
90.3 - KRFP Moscow, later KPBZ Spokane, local here in Sandpoint is K212EY (KAWZ)
90.5 - KNWV, and nothing but weak bursts after about 30 mi of driving
90.7 - Weak KZUU at the 3000' high point followed by K214AR South Spokane (KPBX) later on.
90.9 - KKRH Grangeville good in north central ID and especially near Deary, nearly 5 bars
91.1 - KPBX
91.3 - K217GA Clarkston (KRFA) and just HD hash after
91.5 - Lots of HD hash to begin with, then a station that wasn't a music format (KPLG Plains MT?), very weak talk, followed by KUBS Newport w/ country run by Newport High School (WA)
91.7 - just KRFA
91.9 - just KSFC, when I got within 45-50 min. driving distance from Coeur D'Alene
92.1 - Interesting frequency! K221FW Lewiston (Hank FM) heard here and there for quite a ways, up near Clarkia. Then it was KXJO St. Maries (KPBX) followed by more KPBX on KIBX Bonners Ferry. Can't find KCRK Colville so far
92.3 - K222BG Dartford (KYRS) through most of the core CDA/Post Falls area. KWHJ-LP Newport (Religion) fading up past Silverwood
92.5 - K223AN Coeur D'Alene (KVNI)
92.7 - KORT good, then weak in St. Maries, gone past Worley or so, great range for 1000 watts
92.9 - KZZU
93.1 - K226CT Lewiston (KRLC), with opening day Mariners, this went out past PLUMMER! This was the farthest any Lewiston translator made it to the north.
93.3 - K227BW (KRFA) Pullman, fading to K227CD Spokane (KKRS) in CDA/Post Falls
93.5 - Once K228DU Clarkston (KJCF) was gone, nothing
93.7 - KDRK
93.9 -
94.1 - KCLK Clarkston mixing with K231CU Spokane (KJRB) south of Coeur D'Alene. Then a multipathed K231CU.
94.3 -
94.5 - KHTQ
94.7 -
94.9 - I can't find CBTA Trail anywhere on the trip so far. This is a big signal. Only hearing KPLL-LP (south of Deary) and later, K235CP Coeur D'Alene (KEEH), still being heard weakly near Sandpoint
95.1 -
95.3 - KPND
95.5 - nothing after KOZE translator faded
95.7 - K239CL Spokane (KYOZ), Regional Mexican music relaying 1330 AM. Weak at St. Maries and better to the north. No sign of CJAT Trail BC, another big signal
95.9 -
96.1 - KFOO mostly, but near Deary it mixed with Lars Larson. Is the K241CW at Enterprise OR // to KWVR-AM 1340? This would be over 100 miles at 98 watts
963 -
96.5 - KOZE, then fading slowly to K243CG Spokane (KTRW-AM)
96.7 -
96.9 - K237CO, KEZE, and K245CH Grangeville (KORT-AM 1230) at the hill above Juliaetta
97.1 - Right now, getting K246CU Bonners Ferry (KBFI-1450) but nothing else on the trip (even KXRX)
97.3 - KKRS
97.5 - KOTF-LP Hayden (Religious) mostly just in Coeur D'Alene/Hayden
97.7 - KZBG fading to K249FF Spokane (KFIO-AM) around Plummer or so, then KTAQ-LP Sandpoint (3ABN) about 5 mi out of Sandpoint
97.9 -
98.1 - KISC
98.3 -
98.5 - KZID until going into Juliaetta/Kendrick, too multipathed. But nice to hear KEYG Grand Coulee in between Plummer and Worley with a nice signal at times, over 100 mi
98.7 -
98.9 - KKZX
99.1 - K256BY Lewiston (KZBG-HD4) faded pretty quickly. Then blank
99.3 - K257FX (Kix 99.3) Spokane weakly 10 mi S of St. Maries, better but still multipathed in Coeur D'Alene. Here it's K257DH Bonners Ferry (KXLY, not KDRK)
99.5 - KZZL
99.7 -
99.9 - KXLY
100.1 -
100.3 - Nothing until K262CR Coeur D'Alene popped in with KSFC/91.9 probably 10 mi from CDA.
100.5 - KQZB only heard in the Latah County portion of the drive
100.7 - K264CH Spokane (KXLY-AM) heard W of St. Maries and better to the north
100.9 - Once Lewiston translator faded, nothing until 5 mi from my hotel - K265AV Bonners Ferry (KKZX, not KZBD)
101.1 - KEYF
101.3 -
101.5 - KATW, fading to K268DL Spokane (KZFS)
101.7 - I tried to find KTNY Libby MT and couldn't. Just K269DU Sandpoint here (KPBX), but the modulation is very low
101.9 - KTSL
102.1 - K271CU Pullman (KQQQ) heard to Plummer, yet NO sign of the mighty Quake KPQ in Wenatchee which I thought used to make it to Spokane???
102.3 - KICR
102.5 - KRAO Colfax until just south of Coeur D'Alene. KIBR Sandpoint very weak from CDA northward, it didn't get strong until Careywood or further
102.7 - KCHW Chewelah, very multipathed yet heard them around Coeur D'Alene
More in another post

102.9 - KVAB Clarkston, later K275CF Sandpoint (KTPO-HD2, Rock 103)
103.1 - KCDA
103.3 - Finally heard 'Mix 103' KLER Orofino with good strength along Hwy 3 heading up the Juliaetta grade, into Deary, I MAY have even heard them in Coeur D'Alene. I can't remember. Local news weekdays at noon with a grain market report, full WX forecast and an interview segment. The rest of the time was Westwood One adult contemporary. KLER used to be live and local all the time, not anymore. But the grain report was a novelty to hear...
103.5 - K278AR (KKRH) Moscow fading later to K278CY 'The Game' Spokane (KGA), but KTWD Wallace also in at times
103.7 -
103.9 - Once Lewiston translator faded, just KBBD
104.1 -
104.3 - KHTR went out and out - weak but audible at Silverwood or so
104.5 - KJYR Newport, new Christian Contemporary station
104.7 - Even in hilly Kendrick, K284BW (Hits 104.7) Moscow did OK, 3 bars or so. Gone about 30 mi away
104.9 - KEEH
105.1 - KVTY until dropping down from 3000' into St Maries. Can't find KWOL Kalispell either, a big signal that could have put a few nodes into the Idaho side
105.3 - K287BV Spokane (KXLX) but not very strong until Post Falls, then K287BT Sandpoint (The Beach, Hot AC)
105.5 - Weak K288EU Lapwai (KIYE), nothing else
105.7 - KZBD
105.9 -
106.1 - KZFN, except K291CO Spokane (KTTO) in Coeur D'Alene and N of town
106.3 -
106.5 - KSPO, but not until 5 mi E of Saint Maries
106.7 - KTPO NEW FORMAT...see post
106.9 - KMOK, they and 94.1 probably the farthest Lewiston stations to go out to the north
107.1 - K296BJ Bonners Ferry (relaying KDRK) here in the hotel, KPKL Deer Park starting around Plummer, but weak compared to other Spokane FMs. Lots of '60s music
107.3 - nothing after Asotin translator faded
107.5 - K298BQ CDA (KTSL) gets out well on Hwy 95, also heard KOUG-LP Pullman along Hwy 3
107.7 -
107.9 - KMBI

Not as much as KSPT-1400 swallowed up a good chunk of the AM band. Did notice a strong CBK-540 and a weaker CBW-990. I was pretty tired when I got in. Zonked out as soon as I switched off the lights just before midnight.
Report from the way back is coming later, but I was able to hear a noisy but stable CBTA-94.9 Trail BC (and a weaker CJAT-95.7 mixed w/ the KYOZ-1330 translator) in Oldtown ID/Newport WA. The first and only time I was able to hear Canada...an unusual situation being well into the 48th parallel. Too many mountains blocking a lot of those signals. Nothing from Castlegar or Cranbrook, and no Montana stations either with too many mountains in the way. Kalispell was only 100 mi or so.

You got CBK and CBW in Western Montana? AWESOME!

Very nice logs you have here! I think that 103.3 rocker you got in Clarkston was K277CQ Sandpoint, which is a simulcast of KTPO-HD2 and K275CF Sandpoint. I'm surprised you didn't log that station while you were in Sandpoint. It's entirely possible though that KDTR made it over the mountains. I once had KIMO 107.3 from Kooskia, ID on my way to Lolo Pass.

KTPO was a KPND simulcast as of 23 March 2022, when I received it faintly from Kamiak Butte. They must've flipped within the last few weeks. KPND has a mega 100 kW signal now w/ crystal clear IBOC (it sounds great!), so I assume Blue Sky figured that KPND covers Sandpoint sufficiently again.

KPQ does make its way into Spokane - normally - but I think it's operating under reduced power since they filed an STA extension. I did manage to catch it at Kamiak Butte faintly on 3/23.

Along US-95, if you heard country on 92.3, that was most definitely KIZN. I've logged KIZN from Steptoe Butte, Kamiak Butte, and at Kooskia. I'm surprised you never caught KDBI 106.3 Homedale/Boise; I logged that at Kamiak Butte too.

He received it in North Idaho. CBK and CBW are both normal to receive in the Northwest, I got both every night.

in Western Montana
No, I was close to the MT border but still in Idaho, at Sandpoint. CBK and CBW were at night of course.

I had both of the Rock 103 translators (102.9/103.3) in Sandpoint. One needs to flip to a KPND simulcast, as 106.7 has gone to 'Max FM' classic hits and KPND is multipathed. Too bad.

Heard KPQ-FM as far as the Elk WA area on US-2, and not heard whatsoever on the ID side. KPQ was strong enough for RDS around Cheney, maybe a little SW of that.

I agree, it's possible they might flip one of them to KPND. I think Blue Sky is still in the process of arranging things. When KPND started transmitting HD, they had KICR 102.3 on its HD2. A few months later, they flipped it to a simulcast of Rock 103.

Oh, this was at night? That would explain it. Definitely try to grab CBK during the daytime whilst your in Northern Idaho. It will be a weak fringe, but would be an awesome grab!

I have returned home to the Kittitas Valley, so I won't be back in ID for at least several more months. But cyberdad had CBK nearly (or just after) the BC border on a Canadian Prairies road trip a few years back, so I bet CBK is possible in the daytime at least E of Glacier National Park...

First of all, great stuff, as usual. Thanks for sharing from what sounds like a great trip!

As for CBK and my trip (2012), I drove the Trans-Canada Highway from Winnipeg to Vancouver (actually continuing on the ferry to Victoria). Beginning in Winnipeg, where it trips the car radio scan button, I tracked CBK as far west as I could. By the time I got to Calgsry (the next day), CBK was still very much listenable. But about 35-40 miles west of there near Banff, the Rockies started, and CBK began tofade rapidly. About a half hour west of Banff was the BC border, and CBK was barely audible. A few miles beyond that all traces of CBK were gone. But yes, CBK does make it to the Alberta-BC Corder and just barely beyond.

Going east, CBK, as I alluded to, is fine in Winnipeg. But about an hour east of there, the landscape rather abruptly changes from prairie with fantastic ground conductivity to Canadian Shield (solid rock with very thin topsoil) which has awful conductivity. CBK's day signal only makes it for about an hour beyond that point, and the fades completely at a point on the 30-mile stretch beyond the Manitoba-Ontario border and Kenora, Ontario. However, going southeast of Winnipeg, CBK is audible in roughly the northwest third of Minnesota.

An impressive signal....and the Trans-Canada Highway is an impressive drive. I highly recommend it. Including Ontario and points east!

I'd like to do an eastern BC trip sometime, Osoyoos and Penticton up to Kelowna, east towards Cranbrook, down to Creston, Grand Forks and Trail. Someday, someday...

I went to Penticton in 2013 w/out a radio, and would love to go back with my full set up.

Pretty much the entire Trans-Canada Highway is good for DX. Lots of open area. The Rockies, prairies, and Northwoods. Just don't get too distracted by the DX to enjoy the scenery. Or vice versa!

I can DX and enjoy the scenery simultaneously. Mount Spokane has breathtaking scenery, and breathtaking DX.
