Rob Anthony tapped as PD WMMS and 106.5 The Lake.

Rob Anthony will manage rock WMMS (100.7) and adult hits “106.5 The Lake”

At least change the format of 106.5 to soft AC with songs prior to the 2010's, similar to Sunny 101.7 in Canton and essentially to what WDOK used to play before New/Star 102. 80% of The Lake's playlist is the same as Majic, with a few songs switched out with ones from the 90's, so it's silly to have two O&O stations that are basically the same. Change one of them already!

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind a good oldies format featuring songs from the 50's & 60's, kind of what Majic used to be before Clear Channel bought and ruined them in the late 90's. Of course, that would never happen due to advertisers and their focus on the 55 & under demographic, but it would be nice for those who don't want to use modern devices and apps to listen to their music.

There certainly is a void of 50s and 60s music on the local airwaves. The only option is on the college radio stations on the weekend, specifically WJCU and WBWC. I believe WSTB in Streetsboro still airs oldies all day on Sunday, but their signal is poor on the west side where I am.

So....will WMMS start to sound more like The Lake or will The Lake start to sound more like 'MMS?

I would think that from a sales perspective it would be important for each station to retain its brand integrity. That way they reach two different audiences. Just putting the same person in charge doesn't mean the stations will sound the same. There's a lot of this happening in radio.

I doubt much changes with either station. But they'll both be blown up and replaced before WMJI ever goes back to the 50s & 60s to appease a handful of old radio guys.

WMMS is categorized as a "rock" station the above article, eh? I always think of it is a talk & sports station first and foremost. Would be nice if Cleveland could regain a full-time rock station; that's what 107.3 could've & should've been.

WMMS is a Top 5 station. There really isn't enough current consensus rock music to fill a radio station. As it is they may play two currents and maybe a dozen recurrents? This is more of a music problem than a radio problem. If the music industry took genre seriously, which it hasn't in the last ten years, things would be different. Instead the music industry is basically one big genre.

It is time for a metamorphosis in the music industry. It is very stale and has been for at least 20 yyears.

I doubt either station will sound any different. 1065 has added more 90s/early 2000s rock tracks than many other Variety Hits simply because of Majic. Outside of that, not much has changed there in the 11 and a half years since the Mix to Lake flip. MMS is different than it used to be, but it's a heritage station that has done what it does well for a while now.

Why would Iheart ever get rid of the lakes adult hits format for a more expensive to run Soft AC format? I

Seeing that Majic just recently updated their logo, perhaps there are plans to refresh or change its format sometime soon. I remember WDOK changed their logo from Soft Rock 102.1 to WDOK 102.1 about a year prior to rebranding as New 102. Along with that logo, there was a slight revamp to their playlist, which slowly added some newer mainstream songs from Cee Lo Green, Lady Gaga, Pink, etc. Apparently that "refresh" wasn't working out for them, and the New 102 branding included more modern mainstream music while slowly phasing out their previous soft AC format.

107.3 does seem to rock a lot more than WMMS when it comes to music.

Why would it be more expensive? After WDOK chased me away with their format change, I started listening to WHOF in Canton, also operated by iHeart Radio. Before they were known as Sunny 101.7, it was My 101.7, and at that time, it essentially an automated station with no DJ's, no local shows, nothing but non-stop music with an occasional new song thrown in over time. They did have a morning show though. It is pretty much what The Lake is right now.

Why change it if the WHLK is doing well though

Not likely with international interests controlling the three largest record companies and small labels don't have significant influence.
