Robbie Roberston of The Band

This is a shocker. Robbie Robertson, lead guitarist and principal songwriter for The Band is dead at age 80:

Very sad day. Robertson was one of the greatest songwriters ever - bar none. His skill at telling stories and creating characters was exceptional. His talent as a guitarist was quite impressive. His weaving style on Dylan's BLONDE ON BLONDE album was excellent. Songs like "Acadian Driftwood", "Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "The Weight" and so many others show his craft. A true artist for all time.

Time to rewatch THE LAST WALTZ again. RIP...

Sad news indeed. He was one of my absolute favorites and in my opinion, one of the most underappreciated rock artists of our time. I especially love his solo work which began with his self-titled album in 1987.

His first solo album featured Peter Gabriel and U2. His album "Storyville" was also outstanding with great New Orleans flavour. Robertson was one of the Giants. His comments about his experience touring with Dylan (after he had gone "Electric") were priceless. Crowds were booing them for supposedly selling out the Folk crowd. His stories were very entertaining...

There's a project I've been following since 2009 called Playing For Change. They do this thing called a "song around the world" where they record (mostly street) musicians doing covers and mix the performances down into an international version. In the years since, they've grown exponentially and now are making covers where they invite the original artists to participate. Anyway, this was what they did with "The Weight" for the 50th anniversary of the song. RIP Robbie.

Unfortunate typo in your headline with his name misspelled. Maybe the Mods can fix it.

One of my favourite tracks was "Sleeping". He and Richard Manuel wrote it. "The Storm is passed, there is Peace at last" is a great line...
