Robert Cunningham

Not sure if you saw this, but Robert Cunningham, a longtime radio personality and media member in Columbus, passed away from cancer last week. I first worked with Robert at WULA/WKQK in Eufaula, Alabama in 1982. I think he was working weekends and some overnights at WCGQ when he started working in Eufaula, and he was brought in by Dan Gates and Matt Douglas, who had worked at CGQ and WRCG.

I also hired Robert for weekend/fill-in work at WGSY (Sunny 100) in the mid-90's. He was fulltime at CVCC at the time, and I think he was also doing some work at WRBL at the time as well.

Sad. Robert was a good guy.

Re: Robert Cunningham.....David Nolin...JJ...

David and JJ,

I had posted a message in December trying to track down Mr. C. I was a student at CVCC and also worked with him at WCGQ. He was a great guy and I learned a lot from him including my motto of "having a face made for radio" I have been out of that market now almost 9 years and truly miss it. Both of you worked for Ken Woodfin, while I was at WCGQ. I later was OM for Ken's purchase of WULA, which later became WIOL I believe. I am sad that I did not get a chance to speak with Robert before his passing. Doe you guys know the latest with Mr. Woodfin? I am in Baton Rouge now and am the Affiliate Relations Manager for The Louisiana Network. I would love to hear from you guys. If your having a hard time placing me James Steele...former roommate of Alan Quin. Thanks

James,

I remember you. I had not talked to Robert in years. He stopped in to see me at 99WAYS not too long after I moved to Macon from Columbus. Delane was in town for a meeting and he popped in to kill some time.

As for Ken Woodfin, I don't get to talk to him as often as I would like. He got the upgrade to 50kw for 92.7/Eufaula, built a new tower near Cottonton, and pumped a great signal into Columbus, which was 92.7 The River, a classic rocker. Of course, standalone stations in today's marketplace are difficult to make a living with, so he sold the station to Greg Davis (WFXE-WOKS-WEAM A/F-WKZJ) in 2004. Greg moved his Urban AC (WKZJ) to the bigger signal sometime later, and the classic rock format was on 95.7 for awhile. I think they just flipped that one to a "mix" format. I know I heard Jim Merkel voicing sweepers for it last time I was through there.

Ken Woodfin and his daughter Jan Drew are buying up "fixer-upper" houses, renovating them, and selling them off.

Good to hear from you, James.

Thanks for the info David. I hope all is well for you. I still talk with Alan a few times a year, and get home maybe once a year for a weekend or so. I miss it but have planted roots here, near my wife's family. I just celebrated 14 years in December and both of my kids, Ruston now 15 and Madison 10, are firmly planted into this area. I am glad to here Ken is still doing stuff. I take it you are still in Macon. Thanks for the update, my wife just stumbled on Robert's Obit online and called me. He really was a huge influence and inspiration to me. I am still stunned, he was so young. I went back and looked and I had begin at the end of Oct. to locate him, just a bit late now. But I am very happy to hear from you. If I can ever help you please let me know. We are a state wide news bureau and handle LSU and the Saints as well.

Thanks!
