Robert Feder's CHICAGO SUN-TIMES Column

Check out Feder's column in today's CHICAGO SUN-TIMES for readers' reaction to the demise of WJMK, Oldies 104.3 in Chicago. Joel H. is taking lots of hits.

All those people? You're kidding me right? The format's already losing steam. The breakdowns aren't all that impressive for the ones that have been on the longest. To have a windbag out there sounding even more out of touch than his used car salesman ex-boss? Priceless!

I guess only time will tell. I went back and read Feder's June 29th Sun-Times column (http://www.suntimes.com/output/feder/cst-fin-feder29.html) and while Hollander does (IMO) come off as a horse's ass, the fact remains that he's right. Either people are going to listen to Jack or they're not. If people do, he's a genius. If they don't, he's a moron.

I've given it a chance (hey, ya never know, right?), and I've yet to find 2 songs in a row that catch my interest. Most times I can't even find one song in a row I enjoy, but then again, I'm one of those older people he doesn't want to entertain these days.

So, any ideas for what my 101.1 preset should change to? Thanks :)

Robert is right (see post below, too)

Please share with us your evidence "the format's already losing steam.". Where are you getting your information. Thanks in advance.

Just the facts maam.

Please post your facts about why the Jack format is failing. I am really curious. So far none of the Jack formats have switched. Does this mean they would rather have dead air than Oldies?

ain't no facts, ma'am

What he means, my friend, is he WISHES for JACK's failure. Just another whacko trying to jam opinion disguised as fact down our throats.

Well I'm 28 and I have yet to stick around and listen to more than one song since I forced myself to listen to 2 full hours the first week... so don't feel bad...

ain't nothin wrong with opinions, ma'am

But the only signs of it actually succeeding are the numbers that KCBS posted in LA in the last book, right? Plus, of course, the fact that it is spreading like wildfire, which is only an indication that it's the trend du jour in the industry. And only begs the question about whether the format will have staying power in other markets. In my book, people are well within our rights to express opinions about their decision. I intend to do so.

I've criticized Jack for being an automated, unoriginal (and strangely disembodied) middle-America format that fails to give me any compelling reason to tune in. I was not a CBS FM listener. But I think criticism is still in order, considering Infinity's decision to fix a format that arguably wasn't exactly broken (yet). Does that make me WACKO???? Not at all.

opinions welcome, but

The earlier poster made the claim, "the format's already losing steam" and several of us asked for evidence of this (other than the poster's obvious bias against JACK and their wish for it's failure).

Nobody has a problem if you don't like the format, of course. But for the other cat to proclaim that "it's already losing steam" without the facts to back it up is pretty irresponsible. THEY are indeed a "wacko".
