Robertsdale AM/Atmore FM new format

Heard AM 1000 in Robertsdale calling itself "Kicks" and playing country. Apparently the right-wing talk format has been discarded.

That's a lot of country coming out of Escambia County...WKNU on 106.3, WPFL on 105.1 (licensed to Century, FL, based in Flomaton, AL?), and now WBZR on 105.9.

It does seem like a lot of overlap now that you mention it, especially with WPFL being so classic country oriented. The stuff I was hearing on WBZR today was a little more varied, from Garth Brooks to some of the old Hank Williams era yodeling cowboy stuff.

It also appears that they are finally powering down the AM in Robertsdale at sunset, which under their previous format(s) they never did. It aired 24/7 for months if not years on a daytime only license.

Century, FL is just a suburb of Flomaton, AL. No industry, no schools, no money, no people... the town still exists because groceries are taxed in Alabama but not in Florida. If Alabama ever drops their controversial grocery tax, Century, FL is doomed... well, they still might have a church.

Ooooh, so that's why the Piggly Wiggly is located right over the state line!

Closer to you, Zach, you may notice that on Hwy 98 you can buy Groceries, Booze, and Lottery Tickets on the Florida side of the state line. In Lilian, on the Alabama side, you can pawn your car title, buy fireworks, porn, and other adult novelties. I've also heard that a loophole in Alabama state law makes prostitution illegal "only inside the limits of an incorporated city" so some of those women hanging out in the parking lot of the Lilian (an unincorporated town) porn stores might not be perverts buying porn, they might be working girls... I've never heard anything about Baldwin county passing a law to close that loophole.

I'm quite familiar with Century, I visited family members there two weeks ago. I've just never thought to seek out where WPFL studios or offices were, though.

And Century will never truly be 'doomed', so long as people keep buying Whoppers and Whataburgers. Oh, and lotto tickets too--so glad Florida has the Powerball game now. :D

And why both towns have Dollar Generals less than three minutes away from each other on the same connecting highway.

That's just a Dollar General thing. I think they have a secret goal of world domination. Foley isn't big but we have two in the city limits; Grenada, Mississippi was about 15k people and had three in town. Every small town in Mississippi certainly had one.

And there's one in Helena and three in Pelham.

Yes, Century is doomed. They are already broke. I can't remember, but they might already be relying on the Escambia County Florida Sheriff's Department to handle police services. If they lost the Piggy (Century's "Anchor" store) to a new untaxed grocery store in Flomaton, they would loose out on the little tax revenue they have left and likely become an unincorporated town... that is unless Escambia County and Pensacola get their shit together and consolidate the city and county governments like Athens, GA and Jacksonville, FL have.

I looked at investing in a house in Century about 5 years back. It was only 8k$ and would have taken about 5k$ more to bring it up to code, it would have been worth $80k in Pensacola. I backed out because I didn't want to have to drive up there to maintain it. I think it's still for sale.

Getting back to the original topic... Nice area, but I have serious doubts that this AM/FM combo is profitable. I can't see the point in simulcasting on AM 1000 other than to reach the bubba's driving old Ford trucks that have an AM only radio.

What's the point? They've been doing it for years, why stop now? Anyway, Dixie 1000 was a country station before it became the southern Baldwin simulcast of Atmore's 105.9. They've just come full circle.
I think the same folks used to own 1120 in Bay Minette. Do Atmore's 105.9 and Robertsdale's 1000AM have any other sister stations in this area?

... and I've been mad ever since they discontinued AM radios. I pay people to drive around in pickups... I don't want them rockin' to TK on my dime in my truck... I want them listening to the traffic report on WNSP or WCOA so they can get to their next job on time.

I am curious if the stations are 100% simulcast or not. It doesn't do much good to hear ads for businesses in Robertsdale and Foley if you live in Atmore or Brewton. And all I've heard so far on AM 1000 is ads for businesses down in south Baldwin County.

They do have some sister stations listed on the Kix Country website: Sunny 105.7 and WABF 1220 in Fairhope.

So this must be the same group that owns WTKE-FM 100.3 in Fort Walton (but LMAs it to Hale). I thought they also owned 1110 in Bay Minette, but it looks like they sold that station a few years back.

The owner of the Atmore FM/Robertsdale AM got in trouble with the law 1-2 years ago and had to give up the stations. He did have Bay Minette 1110 either through ownership or LMA at one time - at another time that station was LMAed with WABF (simulcast) ... but more recently it was acquired by WMOB 1360 and it is now all relgious WTOF (tower of faith), formerly WBCA... and I believe is a partial simulcast of 1360.

And if I remember correctly, 1110 in Bay Minette was like 1000 in Robertsdale and operated 24/7 for some time on day or critical hours power.

I don't think anyone's ever complained about 1000, but 1110's night operation got noticed on the DX boards a while back, didn't it?
