Robin Swoboda Returns...Again!

We heard throughout the time before Rizzo left Fox 8 that he might do a Sunday night post-Browns/NFL show in season...but we don't know if they nailed that down.

I remember right after Robin's second departure from FOX 8 in 1998, Macie (McInnis) Jepson took over the 6pm co-anchor chair, but moved to join Mark Spain on the 5pm show due to sagging ratings in that time slot, while Wilma moved to 6pm.

Macie and Bill Martin also became Noon co-anchors at the same time, replacing long-time duo Dick Russ and Loree Vick, also because of sagging ratings.

Dick and Loree would leave the station in 1999 (Dick to WKYC and Loree to join family out-of-state before coming back to join University Hospitals a few years back), and Mark and Macie would leave in 2000 (Mark to Jacksonville and Macie to Dallas, where she stayed until she was let go a year or two ago).

Speaking of forgettable names from Cleveland TV news past...Macie Jepson? Mark Spain? :D

NEW QUESTION: Whatever happened to Mark Schroeder on channel 8 sports? I remember he was there in the late 80's, then no more. Where is he now?

Mark is apparently an auctioneer now. No, really!

http://www.auctionbrio.com/pages/action.html

There is no auctioneer reminiscent of him anywhere in the country. Mark Schroeder, BAS brings an Emmy award winning television career to the microphone when he delivers his chant at auction. He is a twenty-year veteran of television broadcasting as a sports anchor for the CBS and Fox networks and as a radio talk-show host.

Don't know how recent that site is...the last "benefit auction" listed on that page is a year ago.

Don't forget that he was part of the local team of hosts on the long-erased WATJ/1560, alongside Les Levine and Dino Costa.

Mark was bounced to weekends on WJW after the Casey debacle, and eventually left in 1999 or so, with Dan Coughlin replacing him.

To be fair, Jim Meuller was the weeknight guy on 3, with Wayland Boot doing weekends in the early 80's.

Then after some comings and goings, Jim Donovan finally took the reigns in '88-'89. and has been there ever since, and is now the undisputed dean of Cleveland TV sportscasters.

Before anybody says anything, I know John Telich has been at 8 for 30 years, but 95% of that time was spent as being the weekend guy/backup for first Casey Coleman and then Tony Rizzo.

Not to mention that John was also backup for Vince Celini when he was weekend anchor at WJW. In the early 80's, John and Casey shared weeknight sports duties until Casey became sole weeknight sports anchor in '84 or '85, while Vince stayed on weekends. It wasn't until '89 when Vince left for CNN and John became weekend sports anchor. Then in either the late 90's or early 2000's, John became part of "Tag Team Sports" with Tony Rizzo. That lasted until '04 or '05 when Tony became sole weeknight sports anchor and John, once again, became weekend sports anchor. Now, John is the only sports anchor period at WJW.

WJW's sports staff:

Sports Director/Weeknight Anchor - John Telich

If Telich is off during the week, Lou Maglio slides over to the sports anchor chair (he did the same thing at TV 5, where he was a utility man).

On weekends, news anchor Bill Sheil does the sports himself.

Web/tech guy Dan Jovic helps out on sports for high school football, and when something big goes down.

And semi-retired Dan Coughlin helps out with high school football (Rizz has even hinted he'll pop up on "Friday Night Touchdown" next season).

WJW is also bringing in Vermilion native Allie LaForce, presumably for weekend duties. She's a recent Ohio University grad and recently was a contributor to SportsTime Ohio's MAC football and basketball coverage, and OSHAA high school basketball championship coverage.

She also had made a feature contribution or two for WJW a few weeks back.

(Shameless plug... read more here)

Allie LaForce (Miss Teen Ohio 2005) and new trafic reporter/"New Day Cleveland" co-host Kristi Capel (Miss Missouri 2006) both come from the beauty pagent world.

I bring this up becuase WJW has a long history of doing this.

Remember Tana Carli who was co-anchor with Tim Taylor in the early 80's? She was Miss Ohio 1979.

And current morning host Stefani Schaffer (who if memory serves is a cousin of Carli) also did the pagent thing back in the day as well.

Of course WOIO has the ultimate bragging rights, by bringing in future Fox News star Gretchen Carlson (Miss America 1989) as an anchor in the mid 90s when they first started up their 6 and 11 p.m. newcasts after becoming the CBS affiliate.

Gretchen Carlson was hired as a weekend co-anchor with Dave Barker (well known mainly for the Glasses Cam) for both WOIO's 6pm and 11pm news and WUAB's 10pm news. At WUAB, they replaced Eric Greene, who ended up staying at the stations before his dismissal for an inappropriate joke on WOIO's morning news in 1998, and Barbara Sorrano Meek, who later went to WEWS Channel 5 and stayed there until she left around 2001. This was when WOIO and WUAB became sister stations.

Gretchen later became Denise Dufala's co-anchor on the weeknight 6pm and 11pm news on WOIO around March or April 1996 after Emmett Miller was demoted to reporter. The Carlson/Dufala pairing lasted until December 1997 when Carlson was dismissed due to poor ratings. I think it was also when viewers wanted to see a male/female combo instead of two females together at the time. Carlson was replaced by Kevin Coakely, who anchored on WOIO from January 1998 until September 1999 and was replaced by Jack Marshall. David Wittman now co-anchors with Dufala on WOIO and has done so since April 2002.

Speaking of WJW and new hires, didn't that station tried to hire a weather person from Michigan state who is a Cleveland native, but never accepted the job. I read about it on Ohio Media Watch. I think it was the job that ultimately went to Angelica Campos, who I really like on WJW. She's really good with the weather.

She was even brougnt in for auditions, the Grand Rapids weather person. IIRC, she had ties to Cleveland. I'd have to dig into my E-mail to get her name...

Robin's one of those Cleveland TV personalities that's been all over the airwaves in the market. We've seen her on Newscenter 8/Ei8ht Is News/Fox 8 News, on News Channel 5, heard her on 95.5 The Fish, seen her own talk show on Fox 8, and now she's on Channel 3 News @ 7. At least she was smart enough to stay away from 19 Action News. That station seems a lot more like tabloid news than actual news.

Now Allie is leaving (or has already left) FOX 8 for a network gig, according to OMW's Twitter page. She'll still come in for "Friday Night Touchdown." Best of luck to her.

Well, they pushed her hard and fast as one of their big personalities, so it was a matter of time.

Everybody wants to have their version of Erin Andrews.

Well, we now know where Allie LaForce is winding up...

She's going to CBS Sports Network where she'll host a nightly wrap-up show with Doug Gottlieb starting next week.

She'll also be on CBSSN's signature show "Rome" as a contributor.

Looks like somebody just found their Erin Andrews.
