Robin's memo to KFI hosts

Book LA mayoral candidate Kevin James!

Jon & Ken had him on. Tim Conway Jr. bantered with him for a boring half-hour last night. Heck, even the fabuloso Lisa Ann Walter - in for the illin Bill Carroll last Friday - chatted with the Kevin for another tune-out segment! Next thing you know Neil Zavedra will have KJ on "The Fork Report!"

Talk about recycling a guest! (LA City Councilman Dennis Zine is #2 on Robin's list!).

God forbid the other contenders ask for equal time!

It doesn't matter at all. No matter how the media love to spin it, KFI really has no influence on the outcome of elections in this town. Besides the election of Arnold, John and ken continue to publish their election guide and year after year none of their candidates get voted or propositions get selection. So how much influence do they really have ?

Besides having Kevin James on the air so much might actually make Robin wake up and give him a time slot. The guy is quite articulate and he will be needing a job after he loses the mayoral race today.

Well here's an answer for Bug on the Rug .... note the "quite Articulate" Kevin James get taken to the cleaners by MSNBC's Chris Matthews in an interview back during the 2008 election.

Gets really heated and funny starting around the 3:50 mark of this clip

You are right, but I guess it all depends on who you are in a debate with. Last Friday he was in a 90 minute debate with the other Mayoral candidates and he came across as a Nobel prize winning scientists with facts compared with the other tired empty heads running against him.

That is why he will lose.

Or...and I know this baffles you...maybe they're having him on constantly because they want him to win, without any prompting from the program director? And maybe the other candidates refuse to come on?

Absolutely they are having him on because they want him to win, but It's also more than that. Good talk hosts would welcome welcome as many guests as they can get maybe for entertainment value, or some bragging rights or for whatever reason. John and Ken were dying to get Jerry Brown on even though there would be no chance on earth they would endorse him. But the chance to grill him with hard questions would certainly be entertaining and I think a good host would value the entertainment value above any partisan position.

Completely different with Jerry Brown. Brown had been on their show several times before he ran for governor, so with him they thought they might have a chance. Also, they had succeeded in getting Meg Whitman on, so they were able to play the card that Brown was too chicken to do what his opponent had which was face some tough questioning. They can't play that card here with the other candidates (by which I mean Garcetti, Greuel and Perry) because J&K didn't subject Kevin James to tough questioning because they basically agree with him on all the relevant points. Finally, with the gubernatorial race the candidates had to appeal to a broad range of Californians, but here we're talking about Los Angeles where there's a much narrower demographic. I'm sure the other candidates knew they had a lock on the "pro-union" vote in the city. There was no reason they would have ever come on J&K's show, especially not after years of J&K attacking them. (For all we know, by the way, J&K's producer could have tried to get them on and they flat out refused. We don't know that J&K didn't at least try.)

I'm sure Robin will give KJ a crack at being a fill-in host on KTLK,
then as a weekend seat warmer on 640.

But running for Mayor and being a talk show host are two different skill sets. The question is ... is this guy any good as a talk show host??

Me thinks he's a one-trick bombastic boring pony!

That is probably true, the other candidates see through the constant Robin, John and Ken stunts and want no part of it!

What "stunts"?

What "stunts"?

Stunts like asking them real questions about their past records, holding them accountable for their actions and votes they have made while in public office, highlighting differences between what they say to various constituencies (i.e. pandering to specific audiences). Those kind of stunts.

What a sad and sorry state we are in when asking public officials to be accountable and justifiable for their actions with hard but poignant inquiry is considered a "stunt". It used to be called simply journalism but those days appear to be long and far behind us. A shame really that we allow it to continue without check.

Well it's pretty obvious that since Kevin James was "one of their own" that KFI
hosts milked him for all he's worth. It's also blatantly obvious KFI show producers
couldn't - maybe wouldn't? - get on any other mayoral candidates besides KJ.

I'll bet anyone on this thread that KJ does fill on work on ktlk or KFI in April when he recharges his batteries after his mayoral run!

"journalism" is all fine and well.

I don't consider ideologically biased attacks from talk show hosts to be "journalism."

So, you don't watch or listen to any talk show produced within the past 20 years, got it.
