Robotic newscasts on WIBC

Maybe it's me, but every time Amber Stearns is doing Indy Today live at Noon I have to switch the station. Her robotic-like delivery just irks me and when she tries to show some personality, I just cringe. Times like this where I miss Leigh Denoon (and I hate being those folks that hang on to the past).

Annnnnnd, that's all I got.

At least they haven't sunk to WHAS standards...start with 2 minutes of Fox News, then an automated time check, then a minute or two of local news--which is pre-recorded half the time.

I agree. It's just a 60-minute hole to dump advertising/sponsorship, paul harvey, and a rehashed morning show interview. Not very creative. I'd prefer to hear Rush in REAL TIME like the rest of the country.

I think Steve Simpson should be given more of a role hosting. And no, I'M not Steve Simpson.

I used to love listening to the noon wrap-up, but it just doesn't hold my interest anymore.

What happened to Leigh?

Bring on live Rush.

I agree Rush should be live. Why did WIBC go with the tape delay in the first place?

Well, with the daylight savings time in the rest of the country that Indiana apparently doesn't follow, shouldn't you get live Rush for half the year? ???

WIBC picked up Rush in 1992. At the time it was thought more prudent to:

1. Have him on at the same time everyday..regardless of time zone (remember we didn't change the clocks then)
2. A 1p start time would allow for a 1 hour overlap into PM drive period, pushing up the second most demanded daypart audience levels.

In 92, it was a pain in the rear end to tape delay by an hour as it had to be done on 10 inch reels of tape at 7.5 ips record speed.

I'm not sure airing him live would lead to a larger audience. This way WIBC can make some fairly significant money with sponsorship sales in the noon news hour.

After all that is what the business is about...making money.

Just to bring you up to the minute ...
Indiana began observing Daylight Saving Time statewide in 2006. Indianapolis is on "New York" time year round.

I nearly had a fatal when I read the topic...I thought some station had starting using one of those machines that can "talk" when fed copy...like the weather service uses on NOAA weather channel. I guess it will be a matter of time before some radio station uses one.

I like Steve's show, which is unfortunately in the evening. I like it when he's guest hosting on Dave Wilson's show. Pat Sullivan has been doing a good job as well.

It's hard for radio people to impress other radio people.

I think Steve Simpson might be the single most underrated on-air talent in town. His evening show -- I think they just call it "Live from the NewsCenter" -- has taken some dry and boring local topics and made them compelling. Steve has the perfect balance of "authority" and "conversational familiarity" to really draw in a listener.

...and I'm not Steve either...in fact, I've never even met him.

I first heard Simpson during a "severe weather" evening while taking calls from those either getting hit by the storm damage, or those that had info. I found it very compelling and kept me tuned in. Unfortunately, after that, seemed that during any "severe weather" we were treated to the halftime show of the WNBA game - now THAT'S compelling radio!

I think it's well past the time to change either Garrison, or more likely WILSON. All good things must come to an end - thanks Dave, but the "one liners" are getting a little old.

Shake it up IBC!

I've listened a couple of times to the noon hour. I thought Amber did well.

No, I'm not Amber, but I did work with her.

I also think Steve Simpson's great, too.

No, I'm not Steve, but I do know someone who knows him.

I love running a bit into the ground. ;)

Steve's ok, but I think you have to rethink your overall programming when the best personality on your air staff is the Saturday morning home-improvement/hardware store guy.

Yeah, they do need a big shake-up in the afternoons because Dave has the same guests on (Karen Carlson, John Andretti, stand-up comic of the week).

(I'm Jeff Smulyan by the way...)

(Just kidding. Or am I?)

There you have my biggest issue with WIBC and virtually every other N/T station..."where news comes first" only applies as long as there isn't a ball game on. So much for the 24 hour news center...

Amber's taken some criticism here...first the declarations...I am not Amber, I haven't worked with Amber and being from south of Indy, I've never heard of her before now. But I think she sounds more smooth and polished than robotic. Newscasts don't need tons of personality. Between her & Sherry Fisher, the news department at WIBC sounds pretty good down here in God's Country...at least when it's not pre-empted by sporting events...which as was pointed out in this thread, seems to be every time there's any severe weather threat.
