Rocco the Rock Dog

To clarify the WMMS flip at the time WMMS was AOR and they flipped to an Alternative format. Not a big switch but a format switch nonetheless

Since 1994, "The Buzzard" has gone from AOR to alt-rock to active rock to "man-cave" talk/rock...not reaaly switching so much as evolving.

Technically WMMS has been some form of rock since 1968. Morphing rock formats here to there but still a rock station.

* It did report to the trades mid 80s as CHR to get product from labels but never changed to a CHR.

There WAS the brief period between the summer of 1969 and the spring of 1970 when WMMS played automated adult standards, then the Hit Parade '70 reels. WMMS was the only station in the Metromedia chain to have abandoned the progressive rock experiment, only to bring it back after seeing Nationwide have success with WNCR.

Aside from that, WMMS has been a rocker in some way, shape or form since 1968.

If my memory serves correct, before WHK-FM became WMMS...there was serious thought to go country. History reminds us it's a good thing that didn't happen.

Same thing with WKDD in the late 70's/early 80's. Ownership had done the research and were literally a weekend away from deciding to become WSLR-FM ("Whistler") then changed their minds about country. That might've worked. They'd probably STILL be country if it'd happened. The ol' Jaybird would've been on FM...pweh!

Oh...I met Rocco a few years ago...and found him to be a good guy.

Country on WMMS was Malrite's initial plan when they bought WMMS/WHK from Metromedia in 1971.

Most of Malrite's AM/FM clusters at that period had some form of beautiful music on the AM, and country on the FM. Well, there was enough of an outcry from WMMS listeners to get Milt Maltz to change his mind, and he allowed the progressive rock to stay on WMMS for "one more year." Billy Bass still quit, and Denny Sanders turned to an old friend from Boston for help... John Gorman. The rest is history.

After that "one more year" passed, the rock format remained on WMMS, and WHK went all-country instead.
