Rochester Changes

Why has it been so quiet with the comments in Rochester, NY? From what I hear there were two News Directors who left for new positions. Steve Dawe at 13 WHAM and Mike Goldrick at WHEC 10 stepped down. Why and who is taking over? What does that mean for 13 who has been the news leader for years in Rochester? November ratings had 10 in 3rd place at 11pm. WOW. 13 was a clear number one...again. 8 was 3rd in all shows but at 11pm they were 2nd. I think reporter Jecoliah Ellis left 8 and Thalia Hayden left 10. Anyone else have anything? There use to be many posts about Rochester TV. Where has everyone gone?

Dawe's departure from WHAM TV to WXXI was announced a few months ago. WXXI gave him some title most of us never heard of.

What is so interesting is that WXXI hired Dawe just weeks after the station's management showed some very talented and long-time employees the door by "offering" them early retirement because the station was trying to balance its budget due to a decline in state aid.

I'm always amazed how stations can come up with ways to eliminate jobs, yet turn around and hire new people doing the same work under different titles. Personally I believe this tactic is just a gimmick to get rid of people management doesn't want around anymore. Oh well back to your question.

As for Goldrick's leaving Channel 10; your posting stated that WHEC came in last place at 11pm. That right there might have been the prime reason for his exit. I remember when Lomax took herself off the 11pm news and the station brought Jennifer Johnson on board as nighttime anchor that there were comments the station might see a decline in viewer ship.

That could be one reason, however I think that the CBS network lineup helps Channel 8 at 11pm, while Channel 10 is affiliated with NBC, which isn't doing that well.

What is ironic is that years ago it was 10 that dropped their affiliation with CBS and switched to NBC because the "Peacock Network" had Cosby and Cheers and was the number one network.

Finally why don't people post more on this particular board? I haven't a clue. ???

I heard Ellis was leaving 8, although I'm not sure that that's happened yet.

We've brought on several new reporters lately over at the R, er.. the Y.

WHEC needs to get their crap together. I find it appalling that they don't have a sports anchor. Sorry, Robin Dewind is NOT a sports anchor! She needs to go! If I were Brett Stagnetti, I'd be trying to find employment elsewhere. It is crazy that lately, whoever the anchor person is, has to do the sports. Then you see how 8 and 13 takes pride in their sports department, and you look at how 10 treats theirs. If 10 slips to 3rd place permantly, they will have no one to blame but themselves.

Third place is where WHEC deserves to be. They have a self-congratulatory and pompous attitude that it truly does not deserve. I can't tell you how many times I've rolled my eyes at how the anchors attempt to pass of checking the wire for "information we've just confirmed." Please.

Not to mention the awful looking tape quality. They'll shoot a soundbite that day and it'll look like it was shot 15 years ago.

Channel 10 might as well just let Funke read the sports each weekday night. He does a better job, and 10 could save a few bucks by getting rid of DeWind, who eventually will be gone anyways if history repeats itself at WHEC.

That station is famous for getting rid of females who reach a certain age and start to show it. Apparently Arnie likes them young.

Grist for the Rumor Mill: from what I'm hearing, it sounds like the marriage between Sinclair and Nextar may be over in Rochester.

What is Sinclair thinking of bringing back News Central and the Point? :p

These days I flip back and forth between 8 and 13, WHEC just appeal to me like it use to.

Do you think it's because of the retirement and death of Gabe Dalmath and Janet Lomax not being on at 11pm has something to do with 10 going down the tubes?

Oh man I so did not need to be reminded of that abortion of a newscast.

No, from what I heard, the 10pm Fox news is going bye-bye and their master control is going back over to East Ave.

Again, rumor.

Dalmath's been gone a few years now so I don't think his retirement and death is a factor anymore although I found it pathetic that when he passed WHEC only mentioned in a mere blurb yet WHAM gave him a full tribute story. But yes Lomax's absence has been notable at 11. Depending on how I feel I could take or leave Jennifer Johnson, and I find her better when she works with a stronger presence like Lomax. Lomax is a veteran of the station and shouldn't have been squeezed out of the 11pm newscast.

Heh sorry about that Sxottlan. I doubt that Sinclair would try that again seeing how last I heard they were heading towards Chapter 11. Sinclair shot itself in the foot trying to be political in the early Bush years and 2004 election. But if WUHF's newscast and the LMA with WROC and Nexstar is done, I wonder if the same will happen with WNYO down the road.

Actually, WHEC did a huge tribute to him, you must not have been watching. And as far as Janet Lomax, sometimes one has to wonder if she was asked to leave 11pm. She needs to comeback.

I thought that one of Murdoch's edicts for stations that carry FOX programming was that they also carry news. Or has that changed?

Hmm I must have missed WHEC's full tribute I remember watching Lomax giving an on air eulogy of sorts but that's about it.

I think Murdoch's has relaxed on that requirement since neither WSYT nor WUTV air newscasts at all. WSYT use to have one produced by WTVH for a while following NewsCentral's demise and as far as I know WUTV has never had one which is rather strange for a Fox station in a medium market these days. Funny that Sinclair focused on airing newscasts on WNYO than on WUTV with WGRZ producing the current one going up against the WIVB-produced newscast on WNLO. Yet WUTV is left out in the cold.

Channel 10's drop off in 11pm ratings mimics those of all 233 NBC affiliates due to the weak lead-in from Jay Leno who has lost at least 3 millions viewers vs the old NBC 10pm dramas. The affiliates were the ones that really forced NBC Universal to cancel Leno's show.

What ever happened to Jack Allen's website rnyn? Hasn't been updated in years?

Last I heard Mr. Allen was quite ill but I haven't heard anything on his current condition for quite some time. I hope he's doing better.

My guess is, the day Fox news at 10 goes away we'll see WHAM news on CW 16 at 10.

So, Fybush stated on WXXI yesterday that WUHF IS going back to its old east ave studios...UHF will likely kill off its 10PM news, no? and what sort of capital improvement do they need to make to the east ave place? is there still a master control there? if they dont do local news, they sure dont need any studio cameras -- or a studio...

Sinclair made an almost-last-minute decision to renew the LMA with Nexstar. so WROC still provides WUHF's 10 o'clock news and all its control and administrative facilities out of the Humboldt Street plant.
