Rochester DMA Market Size

I recently saw the new Nielson TV DMA's posted somewhere showing Rochester dropped 4 spots from 75th to 79th due to a drop in # of households in the DMA of about 12,000. I'm curious as to where those 12,000 households were reassigned. I'm assuming most were shifted to the Buffalo or Syracuse markets.

They were reassigned to places like Las Vegas, Fort Myers and Tucson. In other words, these are people who just simply disappeared. Most of the upstate NY DMAs are shrinking.

There also was a shift in counties. Counties that were previously part of Buffalo moved to Rochester then moved back. So yes by in large a Upstate NY is losing population to the sunbelt. But at least some of that was a shift
______________

The Rochester TV market is not shrinking. It actually has had a small percentage of growth (mostly in Wayne & Ontario counties). Probably one of the few markets in the Northeast that has had an actual growth, as small as that gain may be. However, as mentioned above sunbelt markets are growing at a much larger %. That gives the Rochester market the false image that it is shrinking.

How is it determined which counties belong to what city? I think it would be crazy to suggest Genesee county or even Orleans would be part of Buffalo and not Rochester, but I suppose it depends on where the population is in a particular county.

My assumption is that since AC Nielson defines the DMA markets, any shifts from 1 DMA to another might be based on which city's TV stations the majority of viewers in a certain county watch based on Nielson's surveys. I seem to recall a few years ago the opposite happened where TV households were added to the Rochester DMA from the Buffalo & Syracuse markets.

Great, Sinclair's News Central on Channel 31 this past year and Mike "We'll see you right here!" Ognibene probably drove all the viewers away. :)

Nielsen does yearly surveys to find out where most people in that county are getting their TV stations from. Then they assign that county to that market. There are a few exceptions where counties are split. Like Bakersfield CA only covers a part of its county.

Nielsen Market boundries don't correspond to census divisions but Rochester Metro as defined by the US Census DID actually grow. But as another poster noted it is growing much smaller.

The US Census actually defines Rochester Metro as the most affluent(read: Money) Metro Area in New York State, outside of New York City, of course.
______________

I actually think I recall being taught in college(admittedly some time ago) that Nielson determines TV DMAs by, of all things, NEWSPAPER penetration...and that's why I was told that Genesee and Orleans Counties are traditionally considered the Buffalo market: --Because the Buffalo News has more susbcribers in those counties than does the D&C.
Anyone else ever hear that?
