Rock 100.5 - Active Rock

Well they have slowly been trending newer and newer and now most of the songs are modern rock. Heard some pretty heavy modern stuff (growling stuff). Can anyone shed light on what this is about because for the life of me, I have no clue. 100.5 does not get out as far as WKLS so why compete with them?

What You Want - Evanescence 2k
Cumbersome - 7 Mary 3 90's
You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - The Offspring 2k
What I Got - Sublime 90's
Bottoms Up - Nickelback 2k
Aerials - System of a Down 2k
I Stay Away - Alice In Chains 90's
Highway To Hell - AC/DC 80's
Tonight - SEETHER 2k

I included the decade at the end of each song. Nearly all of the songs are either from the 90's or today. They even played some of the older staind music from back when they were a little more metal.

^It's somewhere between Project 96.1 and 99X - I don't see a lot of the extreme stuff like Five Finger Death Punch, Chevelle, and Korn, so I feel like they're still "Heritage Rock" rather than "Active Rock"

Not sure though why Cumulus is letting them get so close to 99X musically

Actually I heard the new Chevelle song "Face to the Floor" today and I heard a five finger death punch song not too long ago. Your right they're right between Project 9-6-1 and 99X.

Yep, a quick scan of today's logs reveals Five Finger Death Punch, Godsmack, Disturbed, Rob Zombie, and Drowning Pool amongst others.

As for why they'd let it get so close to 99X? Who knows. Maybe they just see 99X as an outright non-factor (and since they can't even crack a HALF of a share in the 6+ numbers, who can blame them?) Project is a moderately successful station and does very well within its target demographic, but it's not nearly huge enough to warrant a target on its back.

This station is such a wreck that I'm tempted to say it's like they don't even care...but judging by the continuous formatic tweaking and their dedication to the brand, not caring obviously isn't the issue. Not knowing what the hell they're doing? You decide.

I think from day one they decided to just go into the game without a plan. They probably wanted to play whatever they wanted and whatever mix was missing. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to capture listeners. Especially because people were probably expecting an alternative leaning station. so they decided to switch the format around to a more stable one. Yet again, they ran into competing with other stations instead of filling a hole. They then were beat by 971 the River which yielded another music change... Ect. In the end, their format was never stable to begin with. Then, with all these changes, it was hard to keep a strong listening base.

I know rock like my grandma knows her bible. Rock 100.5 is not anywhere near 99x. They are after Project....

I don't understand this because it does not seem smart for a lower powered station to try a format that is already established by a higher powered station.

If Cumulus wants to try rock radio on 100.5, they need to realize where the two holes are.

1- Classic rock. True, the river has leaned more rock with their format but they still stick with the "hits" and stay away from deeper cuts (except on the weekend). Deeper stuff from Pink Floyd, deeper stuff from Yes and what about Jethro Tull?? Some of you older folks know Tull was big in the 70's but you will NOT hear it on Atlanta radio. Yes, rock 100.5 has already tried this for about 4 months. See my last point at the bottom regarding this fact.

2- Alternative Rock. Sorry folks, I know 99x says they are "Atlanta's Alternative" but they are pretty crappy with it. Call 99x Atlanta's alternative station would be like calling 94.1 Atlanta's Hit Music station. True, they play some of the bigger Alt rock bands but they leave out a whole hell of a lot of alt bands. Just check radio 104.5 in Philly and FM94.9 in San Diego. Hey, just check out alt nation on Sirius XM. Honestly, when Q100 moved from 100.5 to 99.7, they should have just replaced 100.5 with 99x then.

Regardless of which steps 100.5 takes, they have GOT to stick with a format for a little longer than a few months. We all pick up on format changes immediately because that is what our hobbies and interest revolve around but most "normal" people don't. So many people in Atlanta (ITP) have no clue that 99x is even back. Rock 100.5 tried the deep classic rock about a year ago but they did it for all of a few months. You got to stick with something longer than that before people start picking up on it. Get involved with the concert scenes and stuff, that would be a start.

That makes since on a couple of levels.
#1 96.1 becomes WGST FM (I hope I am wrong!).
#2 92.9 "Adult Alternative" goes away and 100.5 will be able without much change, (no staff just change out music to pick up the pieces.
#3 Or 96.1 is billing quite well in a money demo and 100.5 wants a share of that demo's money.

^
They are SIMPLY A MESS.

This morning TRG actually played music! It was remarkable. What I wonder is if 96.1 The Project will take TRG back and replace "Chris". This morning (I don't know if anyone was listening) but they aired a phone conversation between Chris and your average drunk @ 9am person saying he "had a time machine, and went back in time last night".... I guess this makes for a good morning show in Atlanta.

OH WELL!

Why is Cumulus doing everything possible EXCEPT putting 99X on 100.5 (in full stereo)? Alternative rates a lot better than Heritage Rock, we already have an Active Rock and putting two in one market is ridiculous, and making some weird type of hybrid is just crazy...

99X pulls in a 0.3 share because you can't pick it up in stereo on a widescale, and most people can't pick it up anywhere but in the car :-\ Does Cumulus really think they can't pull better than a 1.1 share with straight Alternative on 100.5? Even failed Alternative stations in NYC and Chicago did better than that

I want to further this a little. Not only was 100.5 leaning active over the weekend but they also had someone else doing the liners other than the typical cumulus rock announcer. Today, back to the mainstream rock sound and the original liners. I'm am so confused. I call on the Almighty Rodney Ho to go see what the deal is here. I smell a story!

Something else of interest. How much does a station rely on facebook to determine programming? Rock 100.5's facebook page posted a poll yesterday asking how everyone is liking the new sound of Rock 100.5. Well, so far the poll is 8 people like it and 32 people hate it. Wonder if this has anything to do with it???

I agree with the person above who said that cumulus needs to just put 99x on 100.5 and be done with it.

So they were Active over the weekend, mainstream on Monday and today, they have been pretty much classic rock. ***JUMPS OFF CLIFF**** :-\

WNNX is playing the rock format game again. Tweaking with more 90s now and have went back to "Atlanta's Rock Station" instead of "Atlanta's Classic Rock".

Which is odd because River is adding more classic hits (vs. classic rock), e.g., Men At Work.
