Stations with large playlists find it VERY hard to get just the right mix. Nitches are important to have - what is Rock100.5's nitch?

It has been proved that when you try to get everyone in the market - you get no one.

Who knows if Rock100.5 has got it right...

Consider this:
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Daughtry (why?!?)
AC/DC
Aerosmith
Collective Soul
Ozzy Osbourne
Three Doors Down

All of these artists were played today. Who are they going after? Project, Dave, River? And I don't know about you but Daughtry reminds me of B98.5 - not a ROCK station.

I don't know if "playing the biggest rock music library in Georgia" is the best idea...

I wasn't around when 96ROCK was in Atlanta but didn't 96ROCK go under? Why try the exact same thing?

Only time will tell...

They could air a 1k tone all day outside of The Regular Guys and still pull a 1.0 share.

It's day one, give it a rest.

I wasn't talking about their morning show.

Besides, it isn't rocket science to put a tried and true morning show back on the air after a couple years of people wishing they would come back...

I am talking about the new and unique aspect of the station - the music list.

I assume you mean "niche" instead of "nitch" :) I would say that 100.5's closest competition is 97.1 The River since the playlists of both stations significantly overlap (see my post on page 5: http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,91269.40.html) There is a little overlap with Project but I can't picture Project's demo of young males listening to Korn and System of a Down. There is very little overlap with Dave. And, I just can't imagine Dave's audience gravitating to The Regular Guys or any of the core classic rock artists. Yes, I am surprised they are playing Daughtry and other songs that appeal to females. Maybe it will take them time to tweak the playlist.

Ironically, 96 Rock sounded a lot like the River with lots of Elton John everyday right before it was flipped.

I guess I should learn to spell niche. ;) Ooops.

As the River does play the artists you listed, they do not play MANY of the songs on that list.

Driving home I heard a Randy Rhoads-era Ozzy Osbourne tune I've never heard before. That was nice. If they keep throwing deep cuts in like that I'll be listening. Usually that kind of thing doesn't last past the first few months, though.

This morning Project 96.1 was playing an AC/DC song when I tuned in. Yeah, I know they've thrown the odd classic in here and there all along, but I'm hearing it more and more often, and Saliva/Korn/Godsmack a little less. Sorry, but I think this 10,000 watt Rock 100 has the Project more concerned than they let on.

Rock 100 became my P-1 today, whereas 96.1 moved to P-6, where 99X used to be.

So far, I am impressed with 100.5. Some songs of note were "Heavy Metal" by Hagar, which I haven't heard on the radio in decades; and deep cuts "Everybody Wants Some" and "You're No Good" by Van Halen (not the usual Van Hagar shallow cuts). And "Round and Round" by RATT! Axel promised more "big hair" in the mix.

If they played it in the morning already, then they've already played "Smells Like Teen Spirit" twice, as I heard it this evening.

It looks like they're going deeper and harder with the 70s-80s rock (probably to differentiate themselves in this area from River), and shallow with the alternative, to avoid duplication with Project and Dave.

Works for me.

Isn't that song universally known as the #1 song of it's genre and era? I know it tops every list I've ever seen.

God forbid a station play an overwhelming hit song more than once a day! What is average TSL in this market? 20 -25 mins?

And if that's how Project is responding, that's a total bass-ackward way off approaching it. Now is the time for Project to really define themselves. Dump all classic rock. Sorry, the young white males who tune in for Korn most likely don't want to hear Aerosmith. Project should forge ahead as 100% 90's & now new rock. I can't imagine former 99x fans relish the thought of suffering through Skynard to hear a Pearl Jam song on 100.5. Go all new rock, grab as many former 99x listeners as you can, utilize the sheer advantage of a taller, more powerful stick, and there you have it. It really is that simple.

yeah I heard Over the Mountain last night. Axel's about my age and grew up in the same area as I did so I'm hoping that he's going to go for that niche more. Actually, I was wondering last night how well jock-programming would go. By that I'm thinking more like college radio where this each host runs a specific genre. But in the case of 100.5, it's sub-genres of rock. Axel playing more hard rock, maybe Matt C & Lewis playing active rock (going back to the Living Loud days on 99x), mid-day host playing more #1 mainstream rock...all mixed with the standards.

Okay, back to earth.

For Rock 100.5 to do the exact same thing, the following events would have to transpire:

1) At some point in the future, Cumulus for whatever reason fires "The Regular Guys" and begins airing the syndicated "Bob & Tom" show or something similar.

2) Rock 100.5 would have to start voice-tracking other dayparts. Maybe "Big Rig" is available to voicetrack nights for Rock 100.5, therefore recapturing the glory days of "Big Rig" voicetracking nights on 96 Rock.

3) Cumulus would have to dilute the core Rock 100.5 rock programming by airing sports. Maybe Cumulus/Dickeys can buy out the remainder of the contract Clear Channel has with the Braves! Cumulus/Dickeys can put Braves on 680 AM ... and Rock 100.5! They can brand Rock 100.5 as "Regular Guys" and Braves baseball (at least until they fire Regular Guys).

If Cumulus does the above three above steps, the Rock 100.5 brand would meet the same fate as 96 Rock.

That, and have a playlist that tries to be everything to everyone, wandering from AC stuff like Elton John to active rock like the current Project.

Kind of tough for that to be their "response" since they've been playing AC/DC in the mornings for a while now. There's been a regular classic (or older anyway) slot in the clock between 745a-800a, ranging from AC/DC to Crue to Beastie Boys.

Crappy variety of cuts that they repeat & recycle too often, but they were there consistently well before the latest flip.

Rock 100 became my P-1 today, whereas 96.1 moved to P-6, where 99X used to be.

Me too. "Summertime" by Van Halen and "Rock Rock" from Def Leppard during the mid-day show? Loved it. (Though I know the deep cuts will soon vanish.)

DaveFM got 95% of my FM time - probably going to split it now with 100.5.

Too bad the signal started fading around Gwinnett Place Mall. I never listened to q100 so I had no idea it was this bad.

Only time will tell...

Up here in New Hampshire, there is a rock radio station called WGIR-FM that pulls around a 10-share usually and airs all of those artists. They mix new rock and classic rock, and created the blokc party weekend (a long block of one artist, a block of all new rock, or a block of all classic rock).

Spot on! Why is radio so hard for some people?

Rock 100.5 is old man's music.

Yup...they are losing a lot of your demographic.

And on the flip side, old men are going to be jamming out the Skynyrd, Van Halen and Aerosmith and then hear Foo Fighters, Daughtry and the Black Crowes and tune out forever...

WHO is ROCK 100.5 trying to please because trying to please everyone, in reality, pleases no one.

kind of agree there. I like the deeper playlists but they aint that deep. rock , rock by def leppard was on the radio in the 80s. all the Van Halen songs mentioned were hits. I personally believe they should slant classic rock but not just the same 200 songs 96 rock played. play more heavier music from sabbath, priest and kiss. And NO daughtry! If they do play new music let it match the format. Like new black crowes, Ozzy, AC/DC and Aersosmith. I aggree Levon and Iron Man on the same station in 2008 will just cause the next pre set button to be hit.
