Must be an antenna issue if you've only now begun to receive it.

WAQY (East Longmeadow) has been around for 25+ years.

Used to work there through both formats.

Used to be Top40 "WACKY102".

Flipped to Classic Rock102 in the early 80's.

Strong 50,000 watt signal (from transmitter & antenna on Provin Mountain) that covers Western MA, large area of CT, also parts of NH, VT & NY State.

Their slogan is "Rock 102...Springfield's Classic Rock." They're licensed to Springfield, MA. I only get a so-so signal of it here in the south end of New Britain. The furthest north I have ever received their signal was on a small hill sloping southward in the north end of Brattleboro, VT (US 5 near Exit 3 of I-91). I also remember when they used to have an AM simulcast on 1600 AM, which was/is licensed to East Longmeadow, MA.

Even down on the Connecticut shoreline this station can be picked up.
And, it is a regular in the Hartford books.

No, Lazer 99-3 (WLZX) is transmitted from the Northampton area, Rock 102 (WAQY)is transmitted from just west of Springfield, and has a stronger signal.
I've picked up 99.3 as far south as Middletown, but then it gets killed by WPLR 99.1.

When I worked there before the simulcast, AM 1600 was "Springfield's Country, WIXY 1600".

Used to run a Schaefer automation machine w/tapes - interesting (ask Rick Kelly!).

5,000 watts over Springfield!

The WIXY calls are now in Champaign, IL.

AM 1600 in East Longmeadow is now WHNP - Talk.

WAQY transmits at 17,000 watts from the top of Provin Mountain in Feeding Hills on the WWLP-TV tower. From that site , it is line of sight to Hartford and beyond.

WLZX 99.3 transmits 5,800 watts from the top of Horse Mountain in Northampton.
(Same site as WEIB 106.3)

I'm often able to get Rock 102 on a basic car radio on the North Shore of Long Island, even during days when there isn't particularly strong DX or Tropo.

Ever notice 99.3 tends to splash 98.9 in areas north of middletown? (I guess this will vanish when PLR goes HD)

i have never been able to get it going west on 90 past exit 2... but have been able to get it as far east as about 20 mi outside of boston... and it comes in crystal clear in the parkinglot of the connecticut school of broadcasting farmington campus parling lot

I noticed 102.1 quite often while flipping through my stereo in my dorm room @ Stony Brook (North Shore central Suffolk just shy of being due south of Bridgeport) when I was there (graduated last year)

> The WIXY calls are now in Champaign, IL.

WIXY 100.3 is owned by the same company that owns WAQY 102.1, WHNP 1600, and for that matter WLZX 99.3...Saga Communications. Coincidence?

On the original topic of this thread: I have heard Rock 102 as far north as Putney, VT (about 18 miles or so north of the Mass. line, or 8 miles or so north of Brattleboro).

I was able to get them consistently clearly with a simple Radioshack receiver many years ago when I travelled to Orient Point all the way out on the East End.

Thanks for finding us. My Program Director just discovered your website and turned me onto it. So here's my 2 cents.

Rock 102 is a 50 KW signal from a the Channel 22 tower on Provin Mountain. Our Antenna is mounted on the Eastern leg of the tower which allows an unobstructed signal north and south (where the population is most dense.) The trade off is less coverage east and west (worse west where we would have a mountain to contend with anyway.)

Nice to hear your comments. I'll check the site from time to time. It is very interesting.
