Rock 103 Resurrection?

Ric Chetter posted on facebook yesterday that management at Rock 103 had called and offered him his morning gig back. He turned them down. Is something actually happening at Thousand Oaks? Did the new PD from Texas actually make a decision? Did CCR actually agree to...gasp....spend money on a live and local morning show? Hopefully, we'll all have answers in the New Year!

Fool me once... right, Ric?

Ric should stay with Radio Memphis, even if CC was going to offer more money than what Ric is making currently at Radio Memphis. I've got to think that the ad revenues will go up at Radio Memphis and that Ric will continue to realize an increasing amount of money off of that venture. If he went back to CC, he'd have to sign a noncompete, his salary would be fixed, and he would be let go AGAIN in all likelihood within a year.

There is very little VALUE left in the Rock 103 brand. Time to change format. Still not too late for all Christmas music

I disagree in theory, but sadly not in reality.

The Rock 103 brand is still viable, but it would take serious effort, financial backing, and a major commitment to the community –none of which CC is willing to do, assuming they even know how.

Even though classic rock appeals to a somewhat older demographic, I've got to think that a lot of the 40+ plus crowd has gone to iPods, Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, etc. I can't see WEGR ever getting its audience back with a classic rock format. Even if Ric Chetter came back, Rock 103 is beyond saving. I don't see Ric coming back anyhow. I wonder if CC would spring for the money to flip WEGR to talk and get Andrew Clarksenior back to do an afternoon talk show. I don't know what Clarksenior's contractual obligations are to Newstalk 98.9. I don't know if he signed a non-compete with Cumulus or not.

With the way the GM handled everyone's departure I'd be surprised I anyone would trust him enough to go back to work for him. If corp was on the ball they start the rebuilding process with a new market manager. The other brands are also hurting...WDIA, WREC and Radio Not Now. If you look at ratings before the current market manager came to town the CC cluster had better rating with 6 stations, now they have seven an deliver a smaller market share. Lets not even talk about the way he screwed up revenue.

Andrew going back to Clear Channel? Not in a million years. He didn't burn that bridge, he nuked it. As for Ric, he can turn down CC if he wants to, but what's the future of playing local unsigned bands on the internet from a spare room in his house? I'm sure the national agencies are lining up outside the Chetter residence.

It looks like you missed the reason Ric said no to CC, it's the principle of it, they also probably low balled him and only offered $8.00 and hour. I give Ric lots of credit for standing on his principles, trying something out of the box and not going back to CC. Those same national agencies you mentioned are also the same ones NOT lineing up at Rock 103's door either. For Ric its probably a good move. There probably won't be a Rock 103 in 90 days and he'd only be swept away in the wholesale changes.

To me, the question would be job stability with Clear Channel. Ric, who I always enjoyed listening to, could take the job and then be gone in a month because of the way CC does business. I can't say that I blame him.

That being said, the syndicated show they have ran in recent months does not work in the Memphis market. What actually would be nice is to have a radio station that actually played music I could listen to in the morning and not all talk with a few songs thrown in.

Last week all music. No jocks. Sounds like Free Beer crashed and burned.

Posted an ad looking for a Morning Show Host.

Clear Channel in other markets have stable staffs, stations with ratings, smaller markets, medium markets.

Memphis CC that bad?

must be something in the water in memphis. i have friends who worked for Clear Channel elsewhere, and they are all pretty happy. there are other Evil Empires out there, y'know.

You're right lots of "evil empires" out there. There are always push downs and corporate initiatives with all companies. How they are handled at the local level makes the difference and reflects how employees and the ad market view the station. Clear Channel has a big problem with their current local management team, no leadership from the market manager, poor execution and follow up from the sales management group and market rookie in OM position. I hear they treat their employees like dirt with very little regard for them. Its no wonder that according to the Miller Kaplan they are almost $1.7 Million dollars behind last year and why they are having dificulties attracting good talent. Its a local problem not a corporate problem.

all the negativity.

how about folks who are out of work. are you giving them a fair opinion or are you just bitter?

and the new program Director....she's got a job to do.

maybe it'll suck anyway...who knows?

ebol if you haven't taken the job already you may want to call mike fleming, ty, ric chetter, jeff lee, leslie wolf, greg peters, jeff radamaker, melody meadows or tim spencer. Ask them how they were treated. The new OM has a big job to turn around Rock 103, she also has to do something with WDIA, WREC and KWNW. Clear Channel Memphis is not a one station turn around, its 4 stations, compounded with a huge sales problem.
