Rock 103

Ive been hearing them talk about there 30 year annv. I remember back in the late 80's early 90's maybe, ??? that it was the " Eagle 102.7" and played new rock rather than classic rock if i remember right? I was young at the time.. I could be wrong

Rock 103 went CHR in 1985 as Z 103. They always forget this part of their history.

In 1986, when they went back to rock, they wanted to start all over and forget the 1977-1985 WZXR Rock 103 years. So they called it WEGR The Eagle Quality Rock 102.7. It wasn't too long, maybe a year that they started using the phrase Rock 103 again.

I always thought the WZXR call letters were great and were sorry they ditched them for WEGR.

"Eagle 102.7" was the original ID of the current format. I believe they flipped August 1, 1988.

This was after the debacle called "Z-103" - WZXR. It was a very lame attempt to go after FM100 in the mid-80's. I recall Tommy Smith (from North Little Rock) was the morning jock before the current establishment.

Hard to believe THOSE are the brain cells that survived!

The flip to CHR on Rock 103 was the brain child of then General Manager Bill "Billy" Thomas. He told me the story of that format change with great pride many times during department head meetings a few years back.

Greg, unless you just don't care any more, you might want to be careful who you bash on these boards. You never know who is looking.

Son of or not - it was still a horrible idea.

I had a bried but enjoyable conversation with aforementioned Bill "Billy" Thomas today.

Chip! I bashed NO ONE! There's NOTHING in that statement that bashes anyone at all! I said Your dad recounted that story to me and US many times in dept head meetings with pride. And he DID! The negativity in the thread is that others thought it was a bad idea. You may have read more in to that than there was bro!

Trust me when I tell you Chip that if I have something bad to say about someone...anyone, I'll come out and say it if it needs to be said. That's why I posted under my name and not some anonymous nick name. I'm not sure what it is in that you read that made you think I was bashing your pop. Truth be known, I learned a lot form your Dad under his employ. I quote him fairly regularly. That's why I "do it like a boy dog" ;)

Jaysus! Don't remind me!!!

And Howie Castle had the afternoon shift.

103 flipped from Z103 to the Eagle 102.7, yep, quality rock...WEGR in April 1986, under the guidance of Art Wander as interim PD. (I had been there 3 weeks!) First morning show was John Bradley, with Art Mehring on the side/news. John left, then they brought someone else in for a few weeks...can't remember who....then finally Tommy settled in. The powers that be had brought Howie in as PD by then, and Howie did afternoons. Anyone remember "Psychedelic Supper"? Kelly Cruise did evenings for a bit, then moved to middays, and Zeke Logan did 7p-midnight.
Anyway, after Howie, Tim Spencer came in...late 87?...PD/afternoons. Then after Tommy left, Tim decided to put together a morning show -
voila! the Wake Up Crew debuted on April 1, 1988. and that's about the time Drake Hall started afternoons. After Kelly left, Jennifer Reed moved into middays from weekends. D&Z started doing their thing, and the worst morning show intern became the best night guy!
Art Wander told me WEGR was chosen for: We Enjoy Good Rock and the subliminal EaGle Rock reference.

Ms.Hart,

I was wondering what your take is on Rock 103 currently. Obviously after they showed you the door to save money (and ruin the Wakeup Crew, that show is now a joke), is is probably hard to be objective. What are your thoughts about the playlist, etc. Personally I don't think Rock 103 rocks anymore.

And also, what is your favorite flavor of kringle?

The only comment I have about Rock 103 is this: I will forever cherish the talented people with whom it was a privilege to work; and as I move forward - ecstatic with my present opportunity - I will always remember my time there with fondness.

That said: I'm torn between the Bavarian Cream & the Cheesecake..... I do miss you Jeff!

...and now I'll make like a tree...

;)

Bev, I have always believed, and this post backs it up, that you are pure class. Nice reply.
