ROCK 104 and LEX & TERRY

ThatGuy—

I'm with you on this one. But if they get crazy and drop the rock (to CHR?), I bet Pamal moves the Buzz to 106.9. I can't see UF targeting any group except college age with 103.7.

Why on earth would Pamal move Buzz to 106.9?? 100.5 is the best signal Pamal has. Despite it being half the power of 106.9-- it's a better spot on the dial.

Rock104 also wouldn't switch to CHR.

You think those state folk hate L&T?

They hate all that "rap" music too.

Lex and Terry usually has killer ratings with men so I'd be surprised if they were dropped and KZY just added Kidd Kraddick so I can't see any changes there (i.e. moving the Buzz there).

Of course no one in Gainesville has the brains to do Adult Alternative or Progressive Talk. If a market like Mobile which has had the former for decades can make it work...why couldn't Gainesville !!!

Twice the power makes a difference when you are trying to get into buildings on campus. UF will probably just tweak the format on Rock 104 and we once again miss any exciting changes in G'ville radio.

Can we support three full-time sports stations? (850/1230/104.9) WRUF is going for it with Steve Russell from 6-10 AM, Joe Gervin from 1-3, and Larry Vettel from 3-6.

The only OTHER format I could see working on Rock104 would be sports.

Here's how:

Simulcast 850 and Rock104 for 6 months-year to as to feature their new show with Joe Girvan.

Pull Brady Ackerman and Chris Doering away from ESPN radio with offers to do their shows on the RUF. This would ultimately lead to the demise of ESPN radio-- thus leaving only 2 sports stations in town again.

On weekends, look into running Jags football and maybe see if they can snag Rays baseball and Magic from 105The Game?

After all... Rock104 is a 100KW signal right in town. Compared to The Game's Class A in High Springs.

Now, what to do with AM850... perhaps bring back student based news/talk? or maybe a standards format?

My understanding is Brady Ackerman is one of the principle owners in ESPN 900/1230, or at least he has a deal worked out with Florida Sportstalk, Inc. owner Gordon Smith to buy WMOP Ocala and WGGG Gainesville. If this is the case, it will be difficult luring Ackerman away from ESPN to join the proposed WRUF-FM Sports Team.

Anyone else think Mark knows something we don't?

Mark, PM me and share.

If you remember the old 1960s CBS sitcom - Hogan's Heros - you may remember one of my favorite charactors from the show - Sergent Sholtz, who so eloquently said "I know NOTHING!!!" ;)

There is no way in hell that going sports makes any sense for Rock 104 ! 104.9 doesn't have a bad signal and they barely show up in the ratings.

Mark's comments (or lack thereof) lead me to believe that he may be consulting the WRUF stations. Considering that he's been involved with Gainesville-Ocala radio since the days when AM ruled and FM was just a rumor tucked in a closet, it may be the smartest thing UF has done since luring Urban out of Utah...

WRUF-FM's signal allows it to do damn near anything it wants to do. CHR (101.3 is marginal), Hot AC (KTK leaves plenty of room) or all-news (UF has all the resources) are logical options, but so is a restructuring of Rock 104 without L&T. Thirty years of branding is nothing to sneeze at.

Lots of ways to go, and they've got the brains and the bucks to make any of them work.

Good luck!

PS: If, as the Sun article says, the L&T contract ends 10/16 and "no decision has been made," they're toast. Great move on UF's part. It's about time!

It make no sense that Rock 104 would fight with 105.3 and 101.3 for the CHR and Urban audience or fight 106.9 for the Hot AC audience. All news? Are you smoking crack ?!

104.9 sucks in the ratings because they don't have Gator sports, wake up and smell the coffee dude!! If you do sports sans Gators in this town, you go NOWHERE.

But, as I said... with Rock104 already having football, basketball and all the rest-- as well as the addition of Joe Girvan on AM850, an FM sports station with all Gators all the time (or nearly all the time) I would think would do just fine.

Signal, time & money. They can go after any segment they want in that market because they have the signal, the time and the money to do it. Even Country--a great cultural match, frankly, but unlikely given the crap they'd take for doing so within the Big U (and a tougher road given the competition, as well).

But could they blow out a Class A like 105.3? Hell, yeah. Or rimshots like 101.3 and 106.9? Piece of cake. Sometimes the best available opportunity isn't on unoccupied turf. Sometimes the opportunity just means first having to crush a smaller or less-competitive occupant--and shove them into another format. Happens all the time.

Signal, time & money.

Signal, time & money.

The one thing you left out was brains.

And despite being licensed to one of America's leading public universities, 103.7 has been run brainlessly for as long as anyone can remember. Even the notion that these guys somehow managed to LOSE money these past few years despite all of their enormous advantages is downright amazing.

It'd be great to see them make a smart move for a switch, but don't hold your breath.

Why would the only Active rock station in the market want to compete with already existing CHR or sports stations? Adult Alternative would be a natural fit (well maybe I'm prejudiced since that's what I'd like to hear ) but I'm not holding my breath.

If Rock 104 drops Lex and Terry I'm guessing it'll take WNDD about a half a second to pick them up.
